i say this is a very good signing.....especially if you can sell mascherano for 25 mill and then get in some more decent players

like ive said many times....many average players can do a very good job in the water carrier role......if your the best in the world or the 20th best in this role you can still do a good enough job

even lucas can replace mascherano in that role in my opinion

What you need to know about new Liverpool FC midfielder Christian Poulsen

1. Poulsen was born in Asnaes, Denmark on February 28, 1980 - the same date Public Sleeping Day is celebrated.

If he had been born a day later, he would now only be seven and a half years old as 1980 was a leap year.

2. He has worked with Roy Hodgson before, figuring in FC Copenhagen's 2000/01 title-winning 2000-01 season, having joined them from amateur club Holbæk B&I where he started his career.

3. He played in all three of Denmark's 2002 World Cup finals group stage games but missed their second round exit to England through suspension.

4. He moved to German side Schalke 04 after that World Cup, helping them win the 2005 German League Cup and being named Danish player of the year in successive years, the first player to do so.

5. He played for Denmark in Euro 2004 and his abrasive midfield style certainly rubbed Italy's Francesco Totti up the wrong way when the Roma midfielder was sent off for spitting at Poulsen.

Totti issued a full public apology for the incident, while also claiming that he was 'severely provoked' by Poulsen, and years later before the two were due to go head-to-head in Serie A, bitterly commented, "It's easy to talk now.. he could have come and told the truth at the hearing the day after.

"I don't think he adds anything at a technical level."

6. In Schalke's 2005/06 Champions League campaign, he had a run-in with Milan's Rino Gattuso at the end of their match in the San Siro.

Milan accused Poulsen of kicking Brazilian superstar Kaka behind the referee's back and surrounded him at the final whistle despite having won the game 3-2.

Poulsen responded with a sarcastic thumbs up.

Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti later branded him a coward and Kaka called his footballing style "not just" while Poulsen later said Gattuso was childish and hoped he felt embarrassed for himself.

7. His four-year deal at Schalke ran out in 2006 and he signed for Spanish side Sevilla on a free, helping the reigning UEFA Cup holders beat European champions Barcelona 3-0 in the UEFA Super Cup final on his debut.

8. His taste for controversy hit new heights during Denmark's Euro 2008 qualifier with Sweden in June 2007 at Copenhagen's Parken Stadium (where Liverpool played Brondby in the 1995 UEFA Cup).

With the match level at 3-3 and entering stoppage time, Poulsen retaliated to aggression from Swedish striker Markus Rosenberg by punching him while inside the penalty and referee Herbert Fandel, on the advice of his linesman, gave a penalty and showed Poulsen the red card.

Before the spot kick could be taken, a Danish fan (whose identity is still protected by a Danish court injunction) ran onto the field and grabbed the referee by the neck while trying to attack him. Fandel immediately abandoned the match - which was later awarded to Sweden as a 3-0 victory.

Poulsen apologised for his behaviour while maintaining he had been provoked and was banned for three international fixtures, despite criticism from Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, a fan pressing charges against him for the attack on Rosenberg, a member of the Copenhagen metropolitan police calling for a 30 day jail sentence and the Danish Minister of Justice wanting him permanently excluded from the national team. Coach Morten Olsen recalled him to the national team at the end of his suspension in October 2007.

The fan who attacked the referee was sentenced to 20 days in prison (after appealing the initial suspended sentence of 30 days) and was later threatened with legal suits from the Danish FA and the Parken Stadium for lost revenue.

Only the Danish FA sued in the end and they won their case, being awarded 120,000 Euros.

9. Poulsen admits his playing style is driven by his fierce will to win:

"On the field, I like to win the game. You have some rules when you play and I try to play within these rules. Of course, sometimes you can perhaps step over the limit of what is allowed, but every footballer at this level hates to lose and they will fight and do almost everything they can to win the game."

One whole match ? lets get out the champagne - so getting MOM is an indicator now is it as i know a few people who thought other people should of got MOM .

Lets wait until he does something on a consistent basis first.

He isn't my cup of tea going by the bits I've seen (i.e. the World Cup), but I wouldn't criticise Roy one moment for signing a player he's worked with and who has European pedigree. He'll surely do a better job than Lucas and I look forward to seeing him pair up with Gerrard, hopefully like Hamann did. That'd be a result. His signing may also mean we have a few more quid to spend on a striker and I trust Roy will get that balance right.

save your breath Raven, that poster has gone senile.

well apart from being key to that victory, generating jersey sales, and giving the lads and us fans a huge morale boost after a horrible last season where there were so many thinking we wont be able to sign a big name player due to our financial constraints, he has done nothing huh?

welcome to Liverpool Poulson  :buttrock

he should play against Arsenal i reckon, would be useful against players such as Nasri and Walcott.

Perhaps he would say it in our current position but Hodgson did state that its about bringing in good players and not the price tag. Its easy to assume that because a footballer costs less then hes inferior to a guy double his value but this is clearly not always the case as fans of any club could vouch for. I think managers can get lazy with big money to spend and feel the market is not worth scouring for value as its easier for them to cherry pick the brighter lights but often these boys come in wet behind the ears ad with an ego he size of a planet and ultimately fail to deliver. Lets give this lad a chance and see how he gets on with his new job at Liverpool.

These are the types of players we need, they play with passion, instead of some of the nancy boys you get these days. Bet Tommy Smith would agree

view from the Danish expet on TLW:

Earlier today Christian Poulsen completed his move to Anfield from Juventus. And even though he is a familiar name, fans are already asking what he’ll bring to the team and whether it’s a good or a bad signing for new manager Roy Hodgson.  So let’s have a look at the arguments on either side.

Is Poulsen the right man for Liverpool?

YES:

•    Christian Poulsen is an intelligent footballer who knows his own strengths and weaknesses. That means he’ll not attempt to play a style of football that he doesn’t know.

•    Christian Poulsen has huge international experience from 77 games for Denmark and many more in three of the four biggest leagues in Europe. He will undoubtedly have learnt from his disciplinary problems earlier in his career.

•    He has long been regarded as Denmark’s best midfield player, certainly defensively, and he possesses the kind of battling qualities that fit the English game well.

•    Roy Hodgson knows Christian Poulsen’s qualities as a player and a person already. So I’m sure he’ll be able to give Poulsen a well-defined rolle in the Liverpool side from the beginning.

•    At Liverpool Christian Poulsen will – unlike in Italy where he’d often play with Felipe Melo, Momo Sissoko or Tiago – have several attacking midfielders in front of him, so he won’t be expected to make the play. He will, I’m certain, be asked to be a destroyer.

NO:

•    Christian Poulsen is quite simply too slow and at the age of 30 isn’t going to get any younger or quicker.

•    Christian Poulsen has no experience with the tempo of the Premiership where he won’t have the same amount of time on the ball.

•    Does he even possess the qualities to become a regular in a side that wants to challenge at the top of the league?

I believe Christian Poulsen will be a positive surprise to those who have already written him off. At the same time, he’s not a player that’s going to be pulling up trees.   I think he’ll be a steady signing and a good player to have in the squad because he gives Liverpool options. It has been said that he’s not a defensive midfielder in the Mascherano mould but more like Hamann and I’d certainly go along with that.

He isn’t going to be as good as Mascherano, let’s be honest, but he’s nowhere near as bad as some are making him out to be.  This is most likely the last big contract in his career and I certainly believe he’ll have the motivation and desire to do a decent job at Liverpool. And he’ll do all he can to earn the respect from the Kop, even if he isn’t going to get his head shaved and learn to speak scouse.

heres the thing if you sell mascherano for 25 million do you

a. replace him with scot parker (30) valued at 20 million
b. replace him with maybe diarra (real madrid) valued at 16 million
c. replace him with poulsen (who is as good as parker easily) and then have 20 million left over to rebuild

These are the types of players we can afford at the minute. What are people expecting Roy to do . He can't afford to gamble on youth in such an important area of the pitch, he doesn't have dosh to get a world class replacement . So he goes and buys someone who he can trust to do a job from the off . No settleing in  no fannying about . Straight in the to protect the back four. Bargain if you ask me . Poulson serves his purpose at the moment and i reckon he will play alongside and not instead of LUCAS.

i felt he man-marked Kaka really well and Arsenal have pace and flair in abundance. we'll need someone to protect the defense which has an ageing Carragher. Poulson alongside Gerrard with Cole behind Torres and Kuyt and Jovanovic on the flanks.

Liverpool have agreed a £2m deal with Middlesbrough for goalkeeper Brad Jones and have finalised the £5.5m signing of Christian Poulsen from Juventus.

Liverpool, who hope to agree a new one year contract with defender Jamie Carragher, 32, this week, have reportedly been offered Barcelona midfielder Alexander Hleb as a potential makeweight in a deal for Javier Mascherano but the Argentinian is still expected to join Inter Milan.

Forget Poulsen for a minute, why are we spending 2 million on another keeper?
How about we buy what we need first. We need atleast one striker, come Purslow pull your finger out. WTF are we waiting for? Maybe he cant be botherd now he knows he`s soon out of a job.  ???

I think maybey has something to do with the amount of homegrown players needed in european/PL matchday squad.?

One of the obvious positions to take up 1 of the homegrow allocation (if struggling for quality youth) would be substitute keeper.

Currently our reserve goalie is a Brazilian, no?

Just a thought
