Great signing. Hopefully we can fill a few more gaps before the season starts.

Exactly how I feel. Everyday without any real transfer movement grinds you down a bit, doesn't it? Didn't expect this one to happen either, so that makes it all the sweeter.

re Joe Cole, would be a fantastic coup IF there was some guarantee he'll be fit and play 50%+ of the season. Otherwise he's just another injury concern like Aurelio was and Torres is, not sure when they'd next play and for how long.

Why did we get him ahead of other clubs? Who knows, but I'm guessing it's not always as simple as highest up the league or highest wages which is what a lot of people simplify it to. After all most people had him "staying in London" so just goes to show it doesn't always work out simple and predictable.

And I listened to the quote of Woy about signing Joe Cole from a few days ago. His reference to Purslow didn't make me believe Purslow picks the transfer targets, just that he would handle contract negotiations which isn't a massive surprise. I doubt contract negotiations are handled purely by the manager at any club, this isn't FM or any other management game

Just to give a few people hope!  I would do no such thing, Riise was not a good LB and some people remember him fondly for not a lot of real substance in terms of reasons.

Two days ago we were bemoaning being linked with the likes of Beattie, and now we effectively get £6m plus Joe Cole for Bennayoun.  If that isn't the deal of the summer I'll plait $hit.

Joe Cole is a player that any of the top teams in the EPL and beyond would like in their squad, and it is a massive boost both to the squad and perhaps more importantly to the morale of all concerned, not least the fans.

A great start for Roy, and the squad is all of sudden looking better, with Jovanovic and Shelvey on board, I am suddenly more excited about the new season.

Even more so when we get the funds from the sales of Masch, possibly Babel and Riera too.

If we use that wisely to secure three or four quality players, and cross our fingers that Aqualani is like a new signing for us too then we could fare much better than we all feared after last season.

As to who signed him....well the finances not suprisingly would have been handled by the men trying to balance our very unbalanced books.  It would amaze me if Roy did not convince Cole to come, and of course identify him as a target.

Top signing, top player and everything is looking better all of a sudden.

IMO using the money from Masch, Babel and Riera we should get;

AML* Turan
ST* Huntelaar (should use 12.5 on him other than Remy)
LB* Fábio Coentrão
LB* Figueroa
Def CM* optional?

Good competition upfront

CM
Gerrard
Aqua
Lucas
Shelvey

AML/R or AMC
Cole
Jankovic
Turan
Kuyt
Rodriguez
Pacheco
Gerrard
Aqua

ST
Kuyt
Torres
Huntelaar
Jankovic

I will sell lucas (10m) and Aqua (15m) and buy Lee Cattermole (10m ) and Michael Johnson (5m) ... still have 10m left ...

I personally (MY OPINION) would have very much doubted the move had our previous manager have been here. Marquee players were not Rafa's style which his teams have been liken to 'a well oiled' machine, grinding our opponents down. You only have to look at the personel and tactics used by him to see that a player like J.Cole (IN MY OPINION) would have been quite low down on his shopping list. He may have made an inquiry but that doesn't mean J.Cole would have signed, after all the player himself said he was looking for a manager who would 'love him'. Our previous manager was not that man, definately not, it seemed he blew hot and cold depending on the weather and some players I don't think could really take to him, I doubt J.Cole could have either.

I am so happy that he has moved on and a fresh start beckons on the football field even if it doesn't in the boardroom, because the poor performances and results made our club situation feel a whole lot worse than necessary and added to the anger. Now we have a fresh face, who's been around the block a few times, a man who plays his cards closley to his chest when speaking of transfers and a man that the players can relate to. The football will change (for the better, over time) and a signing like Cole signifies a better approach ahead in the future, concerning our football.

I know a ball hasn't been kicked (and I already prefer our new manager, quite the opposite to the many on here who have/had written him off before that bladder of air had been kicked), I know there will be blips but I have every confidence that Roy and his reds will soon make last seasons dismal showing a distant memory.

Sorry if this post doesn't really belong in here but it is not easy to see where I can put a 'positive' post on these boards without it flaming something; in the exciting moments of signing Cole I couldn't think of a better place to post this.
Football is a relatively simple game and Roy knows it ;)

I'm made up that we've signed Joe. He's a cracking player and I look forward to seeing him on the pitch for us. He's exactly the type of player that we've been crying out for over the last few years. A tricky creative player with the ability to unlock defences. I believe every team needs some one like that against the "park the bus-ers" and Joe's presence should help, no end, in gaining the 3 points against weaker opposition.

I think it is a superb, shrewd signing by the club and I believe this will help convince Stevie and Nando stay.

I am however, tempering the joy just a wee bit...... His injury record and our bad luck with Kewell being the main reason why. I was equally ecstatic then and came crashing back to earth in a hurry when he got himself repeatedly injured.

I hope he passes the medical and quickly settles in with the team for pre-season.

Welcome Joe...... Make us proud.
