PROFILE
Real Sociedad de Fútbol's midfield playmaker, Xabi Alonso catches the eye with his tremendous vision and passing ability. He has also improved the defensive side of his game, to become one of the bright young things of Spanish football.

National team
Followed a series of Under-21 caps with a call-up to Iñaki Sáez's Spain squad in April 2003. Made his debut, at the age of 21, in a 4-0 friendly defeat of Ecuador.

UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying
Alonso made his first competitive start in a 2-1 victory against Ukraine in Spain's penultimate qualifier. He also featured against Armenia and was on the field in Oslo when his country advanced to Portugal with a 5-1 aggregate play-off triumph against Norway.

Club
One of the best players to come through the ranks at Real, Alonso first appeared for the San Sebastián outfit in 1999/00. He then spent the first half of the next season on loan at lowly SD Eibar before getting an extended run in the side. Came to prominence in 2001/02 despite Real's troubles at the wrong end of the Primera División.

2002/03: Was a star performer for Raynald Denoueix's team as Real challenged for the Spanish title, finishing second behind Real Madrid CF to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

2003/04: Flitted in and out of the Real side but still produced several memorable performances. Highlights include his headed goal against Galatasaray SK in the Champions League and a spectacular volley against Valencia CF as he appeared on 35 occasions and scored three times in the league.

Did you know?
Real Sociedad runs in the family for Alonso: his father, the former Spanish international Miguel Angel 'Periko' Alonso, won two league championships with the club as a player and more recently was coach at the Anoeta. His brother, midfielder Mikel Alonso, is also on Real's books.
