Well as I say, I've laid out exactly where I'm coming from and we'll see. I guess you could call it my "and you can quote me on that" moment. If he does come 9and I think he might) then obviously I'll be fully supportive of him. We'll need six months or so to know how it's panning out, I won't be on about it if he has a quiet debut, and nor should there be too much back slapping if he has a good August. Deco was another good example of the folly of all that.

It'll certainly be interesting to see anyway.

Well its hard to compare to Deco - Deco arrived in the prem during twilight of his career and at his age would alwyas struggle to adapt with the pace - same with schevchenko but despite that before Deco got injured he was in great form and its no surprise that chelsea dropped off when he got injured then just couldnt shake it for most of the season .Where as silva would arrive still learning and developing as a footballer and even if he had an up and down first season would have the time to adapt .

I see. What do you think of Riera's adaptation to English football Bigmick?

I think you'd agree Riera avoids contact and tackles like a vampire avoids garlic. He doesn't like contact. Yet, when he has been on good form, he has survived to the kind of game you have described. The reason of it is that his skill is good enough and his feet are quick enough to survive. It's difficult to remove him the ball without fouling him.

Precisely in that aspect of football, Silva is a better player than Riera. And if that ability was what helped Riera to survive in England, I think it will help Silva too.

Of course, it's not only skill. It has a lot to do with attitude and adapting too. On Modric, I haven't seen much of him in England, but I wouldn't be surprised that if he stays he eventually will come good in England. I liked a lot what I saw of that lad.

I think Riera is a good illustration of what I'm on about Sabre to be perfectly honest. He's obviously a very talented footballer, but does his influence on games really do justice to his talent? I don't think it does to be honest no.

I've been saying for a while (after admittedly saying he was absolute garbage before we signed him ) that he is a good enough player to be the best left sided midfielder in the league. My suspicion is though that he will never reach those hieghts, precisely because of the fact that he can't handle the physicality of the league. If he could, he could be a great player for us as opposed to the decent leftie that he is.

See if I'm Tony Hibbert and I'm playing against Riera, what am I going to do? You know categorically if you can put a mark on him he isn't going to fancy it for the rest of the match, he is eminantly influenceable in this regard. Let him play and he'll play, hurt him though and he's much less likely to be a problem.

The very best can handle the physicality. Torres is a good example, Thierry Henri, Cantona who was as hard as feck. It's not just about not being afraid though (which Riera is), it's about being physically able to do it, which Morientes wasn't.

Now Riera obviously still does excellent things because he's a very good player. Like Luis Garcia, despite being out "physicalled" he still produces in flashes because of his talent. Silva will too. There'll be curled 30 yarders against Bolton, mesmeric pieces of control as he instantly kills a miscontrol from Kuyt, little shimmies which ghost past a pair of baying defenders.

Overall though, IMHO there won't be enough. He'll flicker and occasionally light games up, but he won't illuminate in the Premiership as he does in Spain. Very much like Riera.

Mainly Silva is far more talented than reira and adaptable - able to play both sides of the pitch while also being able to support a lone striker, superb left foot and very capable on his right foot , has handle the physical side before - ran rings around Sergio Ramos a number of times despite Ramos trying to kick him in the air as well as pepe - Remember a game couple seasons ago when he ran Canfornavaro ragged the whole game . He has shown in for Spain and for Valencia and has also got stuck in when required .

if you can name a player that's as physically capable as you want, skillful enough to provide the magic we want, and with end product then you're talking about christiano ronaldo or some other 50m player...

Any other choice will be deficient in one or more of those areas - we aint gonna find

David Silva would be an excellent signing and one I'm hoping for.

Ideally if we're gonna spend big money on one more player I hope it's Silva.  He's quality, he's available and more importantly he's a realistic target.  He'll cost about 20 million but imo he's worth it.

However, we desperately need a striker too.  Saviola has been mentioned and he might do.  I don't want us to change system, so someone who can fill in for Torres when he can't play would be ideal for me.

A fourth centre back would be useful too.

How does that sound?  I'd be happy with those signings, maybe resign ourselves to losing Arbeloa and Dossena.

If Alonso/Mascherano go then we'd need a replacement but my ideal scenario would that they both stay, we don't fu.ck with the midfield, and we sign Silva plus a cover striker and if possible a cover centre half.

That sounds a bit spot on to me John . If not Saviola then maybe tuncay who can prob be got for around 3-5 mil -  there doesnt seem to be much talk about a centre half despite Sami going so maybe Rafa is looking at the young lad Kelly to fill the slot as forth choice ?

I like Tuncay mate, but I think if we got Silva we wouldn't need him.  I also don't think Tuncay could fill Torres' role as he isn't really a 'lead the line' striker.  If for whatever reason we couldn't sign Silva though, he may be worth a punt, I do rate him.

I am not sure what exactly Tuncay can bring to the team that Yossi doesn't already. He certainly would NOT be a suitable to back up Fernando Torres.

Samuel Eto , last year of his contract and rafa should have at least 12 million to pay upfront and the rest can be settled by installments , which should amount to 8 million or with the sale of arbeloa we can pay the 20 million at one go for him
