Id say because Finnan was better. Arbeloa was good, but as long as we had Finnan he was/is under appreciated.

It's down to Rafa making so many good buys, mate.  Too many to shoe-horn into a top ten.  :D

In reality, I thought Arbeloa was definitely a good buy and would be there or thereabouts for top ten Rafa buys.  On his day, Aurelio is the better fullback, IMO, but Arbeloa was as steady as they come and helped maintain that solid defensive shield we came to be known for under Rafa (until this season, anyway).

crouch turned out to be a decent player for liverpool, but he wouldnt be in that top 10 his first season was shocking, no goals for 19 games.

as for finnan, finnan was mr reliable, if you gave him a score out of 10 it was always 7,  not the best, but very consistent and did his job well

A little comparison between clubs during the same 5 year period ?

Going to put up 5 names instead of 10, just the 5 that everyone seems to agree on

Liverpool

1-Torres (21mill)
2-Alonso (10.5)
3-Mascherano (18mill)
4-Reina (6mill)
5-L.Garcia (6.5mill)

=66mill spent on the top 5 buys

ManUtd:

1-Rooney (27mill)
2- Vidic (7mill)
3- Evra (5.5mill)
4- Carrick (18.6mill)
5- VanDerSar (2.5mill)

=60.6 mill spent on top 5 buys

Arsenal:

1-Arshavin (15mill)
2-Adebayor (7mill)
3-Flamini (1mill)
4-Song (1mill)
5-Gallas (swap)

= 24 mill spent on top 5 buys (exchange player value not included)

Chelsea :

1- Drogba (24mill)
2- Essien (24mill)
3- Carvalho (20mill)
4- Ballack (free)
5- Cole (swap)

= 68mill spent on top 5 players (exchange player value not included)

Aston Villa:

1- A.Young (9mill)
2- Milner (12mill)
3- Dunne (5mill)
4- Friedel (2.5mill)
5- Petrov (6.5mill)

no point whatsoever... just a comparison to put things in perspective.. Money spent on the top 5 players for Liverpool, Chelsea and Manutd is similar so interesting to see who made the better deals... Think Arsenal are way ahead of the rest especially when u consider that the season before that they signed Fabregas for Free and Van Persie for 2.7mill, Clichy for 250K ...etc etc...

Past the top 4 or so players signed under Benitez (Johnson excluded) everyone else has been either average or inconsistent...

Oh OK, didn't know he'd been there longer than Rooney.

1. Torres - world class and cheap

2. Reina - world class and cheap

3 Masch - World class when doing what he supposed to be doing. good price

4 Alonso A bit too uneven to be higher up, but a class player
when he decided to show it. Great vision. great price

5 Benayoun - When getting the chance he shows his quality
A creative sparkplug who is good with his feet. Cheap.

6 Agger Got all the tools to be top class if he can be injury free. But that is a big if. Cheap

7 Johnson - He has shown already what he can do and if we can put in a top class dc beside him the team will do even better. Normal price

8 Arbeloa - steady defender who did you job without much fuss. A good price. Too bad he wanted to leave.

9 Reira A bit underestimated I think. A smart and skilled player who picks his spots and keeps possession well. A very good price for the spanish international.

10. Aurelio A good offensivly gifted fullback with a nice cross.
Decent at the back and grows if he can stay injury free.
A nice pickup on free.

I do not pick fan favourites like Garcia and Kuyt cause simply they were/are on average too frustrating and too poor.
