The fullback situation

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

with the exception of the really talented guys like zola and di canio i think it's hard for italian players to adapt over here, hence why we don't see that many of them. when they won the world cup in 2006 i think every member of their squad played in italy if i'm not mistaken.

i can't recall any top italian defenders coming over here and being a success. materazzi only lasted one season for everton and him aside i can't think of anyone else.

I like the look of Dossena as well and think he'll prove to be a good signing. Aurelio does OK when he plays but he is very "fits and spurts" with injuries every 2nd week. Rafa should give Dossena a run of games in the team I reckon. Aurelio is then an option for left midfield (between him and Reira).

On the right hand side we are not startling but we are solid with Arbeloa. Not sure about Degen but by all reports he's pretty p*sh!

I like Dossena , i just think he needs time to adapt and get used to the premier league , he has shown good ability going forward as well and can pick out his man , Pin point cross to torres during the everton game which he scored only to be disallowed , wasn't a easy cross that and twice or 3 times this season the opposition keeper have had to push his crosses over the bar . Not easy coming from a slow pace league like italy and playing in such a fast one like the prem league .

Pin point crosses  ???  For me its been one of the weakest parts of his game so far.
I have seen countless crosses overhit and with poor angles to them, loads ending up in the kop against Stoke.
He gets himself forward well but seems to have poor ability with the final ball.
Hopefuly it will change once he gets fitter and used to the pace of the league, but so far i am very worried that he cost us 7 million.

I agree. Supposedly the full-backs were going to supply the crosses, all Dossena has convinced me is he's useless defending, going forward and couldn't cross his legs properly let alone the ball. There's time for him to turn it around, however he is doing a good job of making Keane seem like good value for money - and that's saying something. Riera apart have any of the new signings justified their signing? (ignoring price tag, just done enough to make you think it was a good signing)

What worries me is the price tag, most expensive Liverpool defender ever and we got Dossena. And of course he can't improve as we've all been told, he's too old to get any better.

Yes I agree he does put in some poor crosses but deffo better than the ones arbeloa puts in , and yes i do think he will improve once he adapts to the pace of the league . Rafa should play him for 5 games straight and see if there's a improvement in his performances or not , that will also give us an idea on whether he can survive in the league .

Whoever plays left back will be left seriously exposed if Riera plays as he's not going to track back or do any defending, same with Babel.

Possibly Dossena at LB and Aurelio at LM ?

aurelio at LM ? not for me mate, especially against the likes of chelsea! in a game like that we need players on the wing who are more than comtable going foward, taking on defenders with confidence & not worrying about if they should be there in the first place. let someone like riera play there & be in a posistion where other players around him know he will keep the attack going & keep the creative side of our game strong, as it has been up to now. don"t get me wrong, aurelio has played well in parts this season so far & i"m eating a small slice of humble pie as i still have reservations as far as he is concerned but that is just imho, because dossena is still new to the side i"m not sure who i"d rather have as a regular for us this season - aurelio is injury prone it has disrupted any consistant form he may have in him.

dossena again has played well in some games but needs to show raffa he really wants to make the left back posistion his own. but that"s the fact with defending with me let the oppo know whoever plays their they will defend first & formost then if the oppotunity arises then go foward & overlap, especially against a team like chelsea. let the defenders do their job & let the likes of riera or babel create chances for us as i"m confident they are capable of doing, & if we play to our strenghts then the likes of bosingwa won"t have the chance to play as a right winger he"ll be to busy worrying about our own threat.

think the last time i saw Fabio playing left mid was against arsenal when we won 4-1 with big petes hat trick - he did well that day and linked up well with riise behind him .

I still can't see it with Dossena, the positives i mean. A couple of decent crosses and a few nice driven passes to switch play is about all I can think of to date although he does overlap which is useful (i nearly had a heart attack in the Houllier years when i saw a FB overlap so rare that it actually happened!). I don;t usually make my mind up on a player so quickly but he looks very suspect so far, he doesn't look comfortable on the ball, I don't think he moves so well (he's not a fluid player). He looks clumsy to me, he looks like he has a touch of the Traore about him (and that's never good!) in that he'll make a mistake and then run 40 yards and pull off a goal saving tackle to redeem himself. Time will tell. In the mean-time, please stay fit Fabio and how about a bid for Gareth Bale in the window? Or how about Wayne Bridge? I think i read that he has played just 7 mins in the Premiership this season? Surely not?

Fingers crossed on a bid for Bale, exciting prospect.

I think we should give the lad time to adapt , like i've said he needs a run of games , aurelio can't stay fit so yes i'd be happy with a bid for wayne bridge who is a excellent player , bale is unlikely as spurs will want silly money for him .

The owners etc are going to give rafa more money to shell out on a left back a coupl eof months after shelling out 7 mil on one already unless rafa sells him for the 7 mil he spent .

Funny how you spent most of your time taking pot shots at Crouch yesteryear which was mostly unwarrated. Then argue and whinge with anyone who critises a very poor footballer in Kuyt. Now you've got the audacity to write Dossena off after a few games.

Stick to the stats lado.

Markus Babel overlapped all the time. That was the best thing about him. Everytime we had the ball he went bombing up the wing trying to provide width or score a goal.

What a right back he was, if only we had someone as good as him now.
