If we had the 40 million, and went and bought for example Carlton Cole, Steven Ireland and Hangeland, as well as getting Joe Cole on a free, would we be in a better situation or worse if Torres played as often as he did last season? Would we be in a better situation or worse if Torres played every week? Is there an equation to be calculated whereby we work out based on previous seasons, how often Torres is likely to play and therefore whether it is sensible to cash in?

Please note I haven't offered any answers, I've merely asked the questions.

mate if we got Carlton Cole, Steven Ireland and Hangeland, as well as getting Joe Cole ....it would be bye bye Torres for me.

he was not right last year then he was out, going by what dsome are saying at the world cup there is fears that he could spend a lot of time out of the games for ever, we could keep him here only to find that he only players 15 games for us next season.

the thing about torres, as with gerrard and a slightly lesser extent mascherano, isn't just what he offers on the field but what he represents regarding the club and its amibitions. as annoying as all this superstar rubbish is, its what footballers are interested in nowadays, and therefore having one or two superstars amongst your team sends out a very positive signal when you are trying to attract other quality players. purely on this basis selling torres would send the signal that we are really not a big club anymore. if gerrard is still umming and ahhing about his own future then the sale of torres would also more than likely see him out the door as well.

as far as the football is concerned i think 3 or 4 middling players wouldn't put is in a stronger position than having one torres. we've seen him so often score goals out of nothing when one looked like it would never come, in fact he's almost single handedly broken down some of the best defences in european football on occasion. if he can play a minimum of 30 games a season then we are probably looking at 20 goals - and that's 20 goals i don't really see coming from a season's worth of coles (for example).

First of all I think 60Mil is 10Mil short of what he is really worth.

Secondly assuming we did get 40Mil to spend do you not think it would make spending that money harder as everyone we would approach would know we have 40/60/70Mil burning a hole in our pocket?

Ideally Roy would be granted the money in advance of any potential sale so that he could conduct those as normal. If/once Torres goes there is a good chance people will look to rip us off with inflated fees.

Do you think IF and only if Torres was sold, the club could generate £70 mill?? I am assuming of course that David Villa was sold for £34 mill (I know Villa is slightly older) just a thaought

That's why you make the new signings first and then sell Torres.

Anyone just see Jamie Rednapp on SSN.

ok i know its not about Torres but he said this, about Joe Cole

Jamie Redknapp on SSN " I believe he's been talking to Liverpool, so that might be the move that suits Joe because the Kop would love a player like that, he's got the skill and he lights the crowd up when he plays so I think that would be a good move for Joe and definately for Liverpool.......... .."

I just can't get my head around this talk of him going to Chelsea. It doesn't make any sense unless Drogba is leaving imo.

I would be delighted if this is true.

Top player Joe Cole.

He is, and although I don't think we'll get him, if we are trying to sign him it is heartening in many ways. Firstly of course there is the fact that he'll want big wages, and if we are trying to sign him it will represent a significant financial outlay. It's good to know we can even attempt to do such a thing.

Secondly and unsurprisingly, a top player isn't apparently baulking at the prospect of working with our new manager. I never thought they would, but some have expressed doubts in that direction.

Thirdly and probably most importantly, Joe Cole isn't at all the type of player who we normally signed under the previous regime. His signing would be a significant departure from some of the more workmanlike players we tended to go for, so overall it's good news if true.

I still don't think we'll get him, I think the geography and the fact we didn't qualify for the Champions League will dictate he goes to Spurs.

I don't think he is bothered about CL football. He just wants to be playing the remainder of his days on a regular basis.

I hope you're right Bav, because one of the potential barriers to both signing and keeping players is whether or not you are in the Champions League. Not only aren't we win it, but given our financial situation we'd be by no means a certainty to get in it next time either.
