It will be too late in the summer, we are supposed to be trying to win the title this season, and we are left with one striker thanks to a stupid decision.

bigmick wrote:I'll remember Robbie Keane for a couple of reasons. Firstly I'll remember he was the subject of one of the most ridiculous arguments there has ever been on here, whether he was a "Rafa" signing or not. Here's a Rafa interview BEFORE Keane had flopped, which demonstrates just how silly the whole thing was.
Rafa Benitez believes Robbie Keane can be the perfect foil for 33-goal Fernando Torres next term. The Anfield boss sees the pair as a lethal combination of guile and pace capable of firing the Reds to glory in 2008-09. Speaking exclusively to Liverpoolfc.tv after the 28-year-old signed last night, Benitez said: "We were looking for a player with game intelligence and good movement who could play alongside Torres.
"He can play with Torres up front and also on the right.
"We knew he was a Liverpool fan since forever. We knew that he was a very good signing in terms of the commitment, the quality and the intelligence of the player.
"He is a player who can give to us a lot of goals – normally he gets about 15 each year. We were looking for the workrate he can give to us, the game intelligence and also the goals." Keane scored an impressive 107 goals in 253 appearances for former club Tottenham – but the penalty box isn't the only place Benitez believes he'll have an impact. The Reds manager thinks his new boy will have a positive effect on team morale.
"He has experience in the Premier League and also all the reports of his personality and professionalism are fantastic. He can be a good example for the young players," said Benitez. "I feel like he has enough experience in the game and that he has a very good mentality. He is very hungry, so everything is positive."After being unveiled to the press this morning, Keane could travel with his new teammates to Villarreal. Whenever he does make his debut, it is likely to be in the number seven shirt.
Benitez added: "Yes, we were talking about the number, and the big names that have had this number, so it will be inspirational for him to have it too."

So I'll remember that debate with fondness at least, even if I won't look back on the way he was handled with any particular admiration. I don't particularly care about him as a person (never met the bloke) and am not massively concerned if we hurt his feelings. I don't think he was worth 20 million quid, infact we've probably sold for about what he is actually worth. I don't care about any of that stuff, I simply care whether his treatment has eigher helped or been to the detriment of the team. I think is has been hugely detrimental, and hopefully his spell here is seen as a watershed which we must never ever revisit.
I'll also temember him as being probably the only striker in the history of professional football to twice score two goals in a match, and on both occasions be hauled off and dropped in the next match. He may also be the only 20 million pound player never to complete two consecutive matches, although I'm not too sure on that one. So in many ways he did set some records. Hopefully they are records which nobody will ever get close to again, and no manager will ever be allowed to replicate the circumstances.
I'll also remember that we sold a fit and able striker when we only had one other one at the club. A striker who's record in his last three Premiership startswas three goals in three games. Three goals in three games may not sound that flash to some, and others will go for a longer window to calculate stats. My guess is though, that Keane will score regularly at Spurs. I only hope that an injury to Torres doesn't cause us to cast envious glances in Spurs direction. All in all though, a quite extraordinary piece of management from start to finish.
