I reckon Rodgers will want to have a look at the players he has in pre-season before making any significant moves in the transfer market. People say we don't have the players to play the style of passing football Swansea did, but imo that's complete nonsense. For all Swansea's good football they finished below us in the league and we were woefully inconsistent, so their quality of player can't have been that good. In fact they punched well above their weight mainly due to Rodgers' management and I wouldn't be surprised if they were relegated this season without him.
If, and it's a big if, he can get us to adapt to that style we'll win more than we lose that's for sure. We have players who can keep the ball, we dominated possession in the vast majority of games last season, if Rodgers can give the team a bit more direction and get them doing more with that possession we'll have a good season. As I see it it won't require the massive transformation that some people think.
That said, there are obvious deficiencies in the squad. Out wide is a problem. I do think we need a bit more quality on the wing(s). Clearly we are also a bit light up front and with Gerrard's advancing years we also lack goals and attacking quality from the centre of midfield. We are also overall a bit thin on numbers and the squad probably needs beefing out a bit after we excessively streamlined it last summer (clearly Aquilani/Cole could have come in handy on occasion).
But this base is good...
GK Reina
RB Johnson
CB Skrtel
CB Agger
LB Enrique
CM Gerrard
CM Lucas
FW Suarez
FW Carroll
If it was me I'd consider using Suarez wide in a front 3 with Carroll the focal point and bring in someone else. Bellamy would be good cover for either of the wide striking positions. I'd bring in a creative attacking mid to play ahead of Lucas/Gerrard (easier said than done I'm sure). Not sure Sigurdsson is the answer though. We probably need another striker too.
People have concerns about how Carroll can fit into Rodgers' style of play. So do I, but if Carroll continues his form from the end of last season we should find a way of adapting to his strengths. We don't have to be a long ball side with him in. If we make our possession count in terms of getting into better crossing positions for him rather than punting it 50 yards then why not?
Lastly, I can't see the owners giving Rodgers a lot of money to spend. The poor return on last summer's investments won't have gone down well and I suspect we'll be looking at value for money signings rather than big money buys. We won't be shopping for the same targets as Chelsea/Arsenal/United/City. If I've never seen any of our new signings play before I won't be surprised.
