I agree, however it will be in the back of everybody's mind how much he cost, the expectations etc and we'd all rather be backing a high quality signing I'm sure

What defines a high quality signing?
Say Anelka,Shevchenko,Morientes etc.they were all high quality in Europe...am i wrong?

Its what a player does on the pitch lad,not his name, reputation or anything else!
I admit im not excited about our transfers so far but i will keep an open mind to what they can offer!

Yeh ok two of them are big names that couldn't cut it BUT that's part of the parcel when you splash out on a quality player, it isn't always guarenteed that they'll reach their peak in a new league and adaptation time is required.

The list of those big names that has been successful is a lot bigger than those who have failed.
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

Shevcheko was a aging big name that was always going to stuggle to adapt to the pace of England given he was playing slow football in Italy for most of his career. And Morientes was also had problems adapting. I think Anelka is a good player and we should have held onto him. Maybe then we wouldnt have needed Morientes in the first place.

No I never said I did mate. Nor was I jumping for joy when we signed Nando. Im sure its more logical that its harder for an older player to come into a new fast paced league and make a regular impact.

Don't patronise me by calling me lad.

And that list of players were coming with high expectations,

I haven't said a player shouldn't be judged on what he does on the pitch, some people like yourself don't appear to be getting where some of us are coming from. We're talking about expectations, inspiration, the FEELINGS you get from the signing being made. Even the most "open minded" people will always have that nagging doubt about a player.

I've certainly not been Voronin's biggest critic on these boards, nowhere near it. He came on a free, did ok in his first 10 games and yet still he's been slated. Fair enough Morientes didn't fare any better, but he was of such a reputation that he was considered a massive flop. Voronin was a gamble and it doesn't seem to have paid off.

Some reckon you can't lose with a freebie, I say to win the league you can't afford to be taking gambles. A free £5 bet on a 100-1 shot isn't exactly going to make you rich even if it does pay out. And if you were given 100 free £5 bets on longshots would you be sure of making a killing? What would you expect as a return? Maybe hoping 5 or 10 come in and you end up with £1000. Or put £20m on a 3-1 favourite that comes in and pays out £60m. If I were to bet on the horses I'd be picking odds between 12-1 and 30-1 to maximise payout without minimising chances of success. That seems to be a Rafa approach to signings, I can tell you it doesn't work in football.

Thought the lad played erally well against Spurs, and hopefulyl a lot more to come.

Found it funny that not many people were talking about how he played.

Any thoughts? Would you play him again seeing what he did?

He did have a steady game yeah.
Showed he isnt a bad player.
His decision making in the final third is poor though, but he is a full back i suppose.

Anyways yeah he played pretty well and for someone who looks about 6 stone also got stuck in at times as well.
Sabre looks like a big lezzer

I think hes an alright player, quite good at dribbling and fairly pacey. A nice backup for right back.

But i question his consistency, at the start of the season he looked absolutly w@nk.

I don't know if this guy is good enough to be in the squad, but at the start of the season he started to play again after lot of months out and it is normal he didn't do it really well...To play against weak teams in Anfield i think he should be in the start 11 where carragher is playing. i hope to see soon maxi playing where he has played the last matches.

Realistically, I don't think he's anywhere near good enough. You'll probably be able to get a few hard-working performances from just about anyone who has some kind of professional pedigree (hence cup giant killings and the like...) but players who aspire to be successful in the long-run - at the level we need to be at - have to have a lot more quality than this guy, IMO.

didn't we get Degan on a free?  Surely we could cash in on him and get 1-2 million.
