Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I seen the highlights of the game on British Eurosport last night....i think the second leg is live as well on the same channel on wednesday.
Luis was brilliant and i am made up for the lad.
His first goal, a towering header about 10 yards out from a corner.
The second control on the chest and slipped expertly past the keeper....like Dalglish's against Chelsea in 86 to secure the title.
The third if you get to see it watch his movement, he starts to run back post then at the last minute darts to the front and dinks it into the bottom right hand corner, very similar to his goal for us against Real Betis.
A brilliant hatrick and he also won the penalty by cutting the ball back from the left byline, the defender handballed it.
His pass for Slovakia's goal was a shocker though, but i think the Spaniards might allow him that one :D

Ace ventura, the slovakians are protesting about the ref, would you (or any of you) as "neutral" (at least squads) viewers saw anything unfair? the handball was blatant, and the goals were legal, no off side, from my point of view!

Brilliant that Leon, really enjoyed it. In the light of what Luis is starting to do at International level we may really have something special on our hands. We paid 6 mill for him and my estimation is that we would probably get 10 tomorrow if we cashed in. The only surprise to me is that Arsenal never got him. Wenger is as shrewd as they come and Garcia would be absolutely unbelieveable playing behind and alongside Henri.

IMO the Slovakian defender dived in, seen Garcia had done him so left his arm there to stop the ball going past him.
Definate penalty.
I only seen the highlights but it was great to watch, especially with Garcia Morientes and Alonso playing a part.
I am glad Spain will be going to the world cup and like the way the Spanish took on Liverpool as there adopted team for the European Cup after your teams went out...due to the Liverpool contingent playing for Spain i will be hoping they also do well. (unless they come up against England that is  :D )

Lovely match it would be. Hehe. The last encounter was in a friendly in Birmingham 3-0, but a friendly is a friendly. The previous one was in 1996, in your European Championship, we defo played better, but you threw better the penalties.

Quality Leon and exactly the reason why people have to take all aspects of Luis's game as it comes, and he looks like he is only getting better.....It was Jaoquin who got dropped for Luis as well so thats how highly he is now thought of in Spain.

England-Spain would be a great game to watch imo, so many worldclass players on both sides.
It would be very difficult to call.

Well done to Spain Sabre, CONGRATUALTIONS  :)

I'm happy that Spain has gone through too.

You know Sabre, Spain is a mystery, always producing SO many amazing footballers, in recent years you where world and European champions in the youth categories....I dont understand it when it comes to you guys in the finals  of major touranments?  ???

It's odd, because in all sports Spain produce an astounding amount of talented champions in major sports, more than any country in the world I think? Golf, Tennis, Cycling, Moto GP, Rally Driving and more recently Formula 1.

Spain's national team is truly an enigma, much like Holland :)

What do you think Sabre? what is Spain's problem? mentality? politics?....In terms of talent, you have just as much talent as any of the major teams in the world, Argentina, England, Holland, Italy.....(Brasil apart as they are on a world of their own)

Sorry to interrupt.

The Slovakians don't have much to protest about.

The penalty was correct.

All of the goals where legitimate.

Also, Raúl had a goal against him ruled out when the goal was legitimate.

Liverpool 4 EVA, Spain has been an enigma (and at the time being still is), but I don't think it applies to Holland.

Unlike Spain, Holland has won a major tournament, Euro '88, and has been to several finals. They have the players to become a consistent force in world football but has been too often undone by internal bickering, perhaps too many big headed players.

Spain, on the other hand, has had fabulous players over the years but have always flattered to deceive. I only remembered them reaching one major final, Euro '84, and lost to a Platini-inspired France. They have had Emilio Butragueno and Michel in the 80s and Hierro, Guardiola and Luis Enrique (to name a few) in the 90s but I think the present team has better individuals - Casillias, Raul, Morrientes, Jaoqim, Torres, Xavi, Reyes, Alonso and Garcia. On paper, this team should qualify automatically and not have to fight in a play-off.

Thanks for the reply mate :)

mmmm, I do disagree on one thing though, Spain IS similar to Holland....Spain also won a European Championship in the 60's I think? Though Holland has generally been more consistent....

Also Holland didn't even qualify for the last world cup 2002, that is amazing considering the outstanding talent they had at the time.

Both countries are serious under achievers.

Pah. It was at home, against Russia, with a ref that was a friend, and with Franco presiding the match, that doesn't count.

And for that reason, football is not played on paper, if it was, what would be the point, Greece wouldnt be European Champions, Wigan wouldnt be 2nd in the perm and Liverpool wouldnt be European champions, what should happen and what does happen can be 2 totally different things in football and that is what makes it so fu.ckin good to watch.

The amazing thing about Holland is the quality of players they produce for such a small country, population wise, compared to England or Spain or Germany.

Given the talent at their disposal, both Holland and Spain are underachievers.

This must be England's best chance because I don't remember England having a better group of quality players than now. The only thing is the coach is really indecisive and doesn't seem to know much about tactics, substitutions and man motiviating. Just imagine what a sophisticated coach like Rafa or Mourinho or Hiddink can achieve with this present English lot.
