Don't mean to put a dampener on his performance, but if you play him enough times, and Benitez has, then you'll get the odd good performance.  It doesn't mean he's going to kick on, he's had too many false dawns before for me to believe that.

Well taken goal though, and an all round good performance, so well done.

True. I am also surprised someone hasn't revived the good old Kuyt thread now that he has finally had a good game....

You mean an offensive holding mid.. ie.an adequate replacement for Alonso that we still havent done that has devastated us this season. The loss of Xabi and the absence of quality is what Torres was referring to in his comments in the last 2 days.

While lucas aint good enough, he did really well tonight.

Well to be fair Alonso was a deep CM who rarely went forward and spayed passes left and right so no, we dont really need a CAM imo. We need a player who can sit deep and play World class balls all over the show a la Alonso.

We could go attacking though with a CAM but if we do then we should constantly play Aquilani to join up with Gerrard. We should though buy David Villa once and for all and then play Gerrad at CM but going forward to join the attac. Spending £45m on him would tie up Torres' future and would attract other big names. i think we can play the same way we did last year with 2 deep CDM's but if were to continue that then Gerrard needs to be one of the CM's and we need a new World class talent up top or on the wings to create and score goals. We need atleast one £30m+ player.

Lucas though. He is good and can do a solid job but he lacks mobility when defending. He lacks acceleration to get back when countered and doesnt close players down quick enough. Also he lacks the positional awareness when defending. An example being last season away at Chelsea. We defended very well cos Alonso and Masch sat flat infront of the back 4 and created a shield. Now Lucas pushes up creating alot of open space and alot of 1 on 1 situations with Masch where previously Alonso + Masch could crowed them out, win the ball back and nail a 40 yard ball to Torres straight away.

Need to put a few more similar performances if he has to justify his place on the team.

For starters....he and mascherano should get a restraining order. They shouldn't be in a 15 yards radius together (ie....if they are picked as a CM combo.....lucas has to play further up the pitch and not next to mash)

forget it dudes... he still sucks... just that he's a little bit better than insua that's all... tonite was just a decent performance from him once in a blue moon... those who feels he's good, please wake up... statistics has clearly shown that he offers nothing much in attack and he's just a lightweight headless midfielder flitting around the whole pitch...  :p

I'm not defending Lucas, I dont think he should be in the team either but your ground for criticism is nothing short of a joke

Lucas and Insua are two completely different players, one has NOTHING (repeat NOTHING) to do with the other

I may agree that he shouldn't be in the team but your reasoning is b0llocks

Alonso is an offensive holding mid... thats exactly what he is. Sits deep and is creative with long incisive passing. Its that loss of creativity that has killed us this season and we badly need a summer replacement.

Judging by that goal today, it looks like he's been learning a few things from Torres.  I'm really happy for Lucas and I hope that he makes more of these kinds of contrubutions in the future.

i'm of the same opinion.

One good game doesn't mean he's brilliant much like one bad game doesn't mean he's sh.ite. He's been consistantly 'okay' in my opinion this season. He's been good in a couple of games now, but had more poor games than good ones.

He is improving, like insua, but can we afford to carry players whilst they improve on the pitch? I also feel that a consistant run in the team would improve any youngster. Stick Pacheco in the team for 10/12 games in a row, and you'd see an improvement. He should improve with age and game time - but is it enough?

He's a good player - just not good enough for a title winning side. We can do better.

That's about the size of it. Neil Mellor scored a great goal against Arsenal once.

All that said, good luck to the lad as he's never stopped trying despite his obvious limitations. Good run for the goal, obviously well found by Gerrard and a good finish.

As I've said before, take the shackles off him and he's a different player. He's not a defensive midfielder in a million years.
