I am not sure the "will Rafa ever win us the league" is that much of a valid question, especially under the current climate with the owners, debt, and the expected emergence of clubs outside the top four Man City and anybody else that gets a billionaire owner.  It seems to me from most of the info I have been reading which I am not sure is true or not, but that it would be pretty crippling to the club at this stage (and maybe at any stage) if we missed out on qualifying for the Champions League and its money.  I am not sure what kind of replacements we could be in the running for at the moment, or starting next summer, but I would think that the club would certainly be entering a much bigger realm of uncertainty with any new manager.

Rafa certainly has not done everything right since he has come to the club, and I guess the argument can be made that we have digressed in our league performance since 05/06, but its certainly not like the wheels have fallen off, and there doesn't seem to be any threat that they will any time soon. I fear that a new manager would just have to learn from his own mistakes all over again, something that could put us back at a crucial time when that cannot be risked.  No matter who Rafa's replacement is, you are either going to be able to ask: What the :censored: has he ever won at Premier league level? OR What the :censored: does he now about the English game?

I think this is the last year of Rafa's contract so we could see some very interesting dynamics this season play out in relationship to any possible extention and how the team does on the pitch.   I am not exactly sure how manager contracts work in England, but it is very rare to see lame duck coaches in America, because of the fear that the players will stop working hard or lose respect for the manager because they know he is on his way out.  On the flip side, if we start doing really well and sit at the top of the league for a lot of the season, than Rafa will gain bargaining power with every win because the threat of other clubs wanting him and paying him more and our desire to keep him would only continue to rise.

I think one thing that skews the numbers where you see oh, he has net spent 100 mil (or whatever it is) why didn't he just by 5 20 mill players and be done with it. Well I think you have to break it down deadline by deadline because there is always pressure to improve the team and you can't just save it up to spend it later on one big name player or alternatively spend it all one summer and then not at all later.  And only signing 1 player per summer is not an option either because of the pressure to win and the fact that we always had needs to fill in multiple positions. Even considering all of that, there are still some question marks about some of the moves, however, its a lot easier to look at things in hindsight and even the best managers get a fair number of transfer decisions wrong.  Plus you never know what exactly the board room factor played in the not bringing in of some of his top choices.

After spending the best part of £200million I think its a very valid question Joe.

Rafa certainly has not done everything right since he has come to the club, and I guess the argument can be made that we have digressed in our league performance since 05/06, but its certainly not like the wheels have fallen off, and there doesn't seem to be any threat that they will any time soon.

Yet as you say Man City have just won the lottery, if they improve and we don't our whole deck of cards could come tumbling round our ears.
What the  has he ever won at Premier league level?

You could ask that of Rafa as well mate.

I think its all about belief when all the discussion is over. If you believe in Rafa's methods you will probably believe that he is doing as good a job as anyone could, if you think his methods have been proven to be a failure in the Prem then the best you can hope for is a swift and painless change of manager at the end of the season, because I honestly don't believe Rafa will change his methods.

I think we could have done better with the team we have. I have no proof that we could, maybe I think too highly of the players and we have really done better than we should have.

BENITEZ HAS SPENT MILLIONS AND MILLIONS ON :censored: PLAYERS WHO HAVENT IMPROVED US ENOUGH SINCE TAKING OVER SO STOP BLAMING EVERYONE ELSE EXCEPT FOR HIM ...

ok some numbers to back this up and if you disagree with anyting just let me know cause im pretty sure some of those numbers are wrong..

im sure Chelsea have spent more than we have but ManUtd im not so sure.. Arsenal no fcking way..

so lets just compare liverpool and Manutd for now..

TOTAL MAN UTD SPENDING SINCE 2004 - 162.5

ok now i know many are going to say that benitez sold half the squad to buyand that outr net spending is thus nowhere near that of Manutd... i decided to look that up and here we go...

LIVERPOOL

TOTAL OF TRANSFERS OUT - 70mill

MANUTD

TOTAL OF TRANSFERS OUT - 73.45

so basically

I am confident we will win, hopefully in style, but as long as we get the 3 points I don't care if we win ugly. We just need to win!

I am sticking with 2-0 Keane and Kuyt,
