This for me makes use of our best players we have now....why ? Becos :

1)We just don't have quality wingers......our wingers $uck. Can you believe in all of benitez's time here...our best winger has been kewell ? And he was injured most of the time.

Currently our best wing players are johnson and auerlio in each flank...
a)They are pretty quick....
b)can take on players....
c)can put in a mean cross...
d)have a good shot in them...
e)are technically sound....
f)make good decisions when possesion of the bal (when to pass..when to shoot...etc).
g)Well johnson can obviously do all these....i would say auerlio is around 70% to johnson's level...and even then...he is the best left wing player in the squad. This just shows how weak our wing players are...

So my take....just give them the whole flank and let them run up and down without any team-mates limiting their effectiveness..

2)So with Johnson & Auerlio marshalling the flanks....we need 3 at the back. I can only hope with Carra, Skertel And Agger playing as central defenders....they somehow neutralise all their weakness and function as a unit.

3)Gerrard to drop back to midfield...yeah...yeah....he and torres had a great partnership...but Alonso was the key to that partnership working. And from early signs....Aquaman can't do the "Alonso quarterback role". So its no use to persist with the gerrard and torres combo as then there would be nobody who can read and dominate the midfield like alonso in our aquad spart from gerrard.

4)With Gerrard next to him... Aquaman will have more time when he has the ball (as gerrard can pull away opposition players with his smart off the ball running)...and he can do what he does best....long shots....quick passes.

5)Benayoun has been scoring quite a few goals now.....He should be able to score more by playing of torres..

To summarise....we have more good "central" players than wing players. So it only makes sense to play a formation which limits the number of wing players we can use...and use more of our stronger "central players"...

I would love it if we went back to the traditional 4-4-2...with good fullbacks and wingers... But we just don't have the wingers...

Do you fit the system to the best players or vice versa? I'd stick with Kuyt, he may not be in great form but despite that he's still chipping away with goals and assists as much as players like Benayoun who people adore at the moment even though his output is little better than a player lambasted for poor form.

Players in CAPS are ones less likely to be universally agreed. I've not put it in a formation, but it would be much the same as at present except Aquilani might be a few cms more advanced than Mascherano/Lucas in a role a little more advanced than Alonso played ie much more a genuine CM than DM, with licence to roam the middle of the park and do what the feck he likes without dragging Gerrard back from his effective role behind Torres. I don't see the need for wholesale changes, LB is an issue and we could do with a better squad so we can put in alternatives to Kuyt to rest him, but is it going to be THAT much different to the XI that finished last season - except Aquilani in for Alonso, Johnson for Arbeloa and Agger for Skrtel, two of which are enforced by virtue of transfers.

Instead of bringing in Lucas for Mascherano when we're playing the likes of Burnley at home, we could play 4-4-2 but I'd rather do that with a better second striker than N'Gog, Voronin, Babel or even Kuyt (who is getting stick for everything and anything at the moment)

when you think about this one, its sort of like taking our standard 4-2-3-1 and replacing Kuyt with an extra CB.  This means that we wouldn't need 2 holding midfielders, and as such, Gerrard, Aquilani and Yossi would be more or less free to venture forward to support Torres.

Interesting to see people bring up the back 5 idea. I used to think this was an ideal formation for us as we had Hyypia who could play in middle position to perfection and always had 3 great CBs. But with Mascherano in the side I just do not see why we need 3 at the back. When we have the ball anywhere besides the final third, Masch acts as a centre back.

Anyway, personally I think at the moment this is it:
