Jonjo Shelvey faces a fight for his Liverpool FC future as the Reds look to continue their summer rebuilding programme.

The England midfielder is one of a number of players who will speak with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers in the next few weeks, in order to ascertain whether or not they are surplus to requirements at Anfield.

With Rodgers having added to his attacking options with the signings of Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas, and with the Reds still keen on a deal for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Shelvey’s first-team opportunities are likely to be severely limited next season.

The former Charlton Athletic man made a total of 33 appearances last season. But having impressed initially, he found himself largely out of favour towards the back end of the campaign.

He has started just two league games in 2013, and the ECHO understands Liverpool would be willing to listen to offers for the 21-year-old.

They are, however, likely to demand a fee in excess of £6m for a player who won his first senior England cap last November.

Shelvey has been linked with a move to Swansea City, and the ECHO understands there is interest from the Welsh club, as well as Norwich City. No bids have been received at this stage, however.

Oussama Assaidi will also be allowed to leave this summer, less than a year after joining from Heerenveen. The Moroccan wide man is attracting interest from PSV Eindhoven, who would like to take him on loan.

Liverpool, though, would prefer a permanent deal. The 24-year-old cost the Reds £2.4m last August, but has made just four league appearances since.

Also likely to exit this summer is Jay Spearing, who spent the whole of last season on loan with Championship side Bolton Wanderers.

Spearing his been back at Melwood this week working on his fitness, having missed the back end of the campaign with a foot injury. He, like Shelvey, is yet to meet with Rodgers, but it is understood that Liverpool are prepared to let the 24-year-old leave.

The midfielder is expected to be valued around the £3m mark.

I truly think it is worth persisting with him. Neither his build/size or ability are a doubt, for me last season epitomised a very young player (pundits seems to forget he is only 21) making poor decisions. Technically he has shown he can compete, on his day his passing and striking of the ball is excellent - what lets him down is his decision making. That element of a players game takes time to develop and very few youngsters possess that skill early on. Picking the right ball to play is a very underrated skill.

I just don't see the point in selling him now. £6M really isn't going to contribute anything significant to our transfer pot. The removal of his salary is not going to be of any impact either. I would prefer to loan him out again, this time to a PL team, get some consistent playing time under his belt and then evaluate again in a years time whether he developed enough to justify a squad place.

it`s a tough one, i do think shelvey has something about him and the way he flew into that 50/50 with evans and then gave ferguson a piece of his mind is illustrative of that.
99% of the people involved within english football are either in awe of ferguson or downright petrified of him so to stand up so publicly to such a huge figure within the game takes a bit of doing, especially at 21. we`ve had too many shrinking violets over the years and to be fair to john-joe one thing you cant accuse him of is lacking bottle.
up until that game against united he was in the side and doing okay and although his form has dipped dramatically since then (tanked is probably a better word!)  that can happen with young players.
there hasnt been a player born who hasnt battled with inconsistency, especially early on in there careers when they were learning their trade, even gerrard was dropped by houllier.
i agree with SCS, i`d send him out on loan too.

Always a surprise when someone mentions his age as it seems like Shelvey has been around forever, possibly because he made his first team debut with Charlton when he was just 16.

No doubt the lad's got talent BUT in terms of developing that talent I'd say we're all still waiting for it to happen. I think Shelvey has been stagnating at LFC , he really needs some regular football if he's gonna do anything with his career.

If he's not in our first team plans we should either sell him or at least put him out on a season long, in fact if I was Shelvey I'd demand it.

it would be foolish for us to sell him at this time and especially for the money we are looking. he should go on loan for a season where he will play and have a chance to progress.
for me it beggars belief what rodgers is expecting from players as young as 21 and id be willing to bet that luis alberto wont be any better in his first season either.
last year we bought assaidi who is complete rubbish and will never be good enough for this league never mind liverpool, sahin was a waste and likewise borini, we overpaid with joe allen and could have got him for half that this summer and now we are willing to offload shelvey for a pittance despite his potential. if he has a good season with say norwich then his value will double.
we seem to be making some rash decisions too quickly for my liking.

Sorry but he played 4 times in the league. Has played 12 times in all competitions. Not sure how many he started but i would say around half.

To judge someone saying he is no good when has not been given a chance is unfair and stupid.

When the lad has played, WBA in the cup, He got an assist and played very very well

I don't think Shelvey will ever be good enough to take us into CL footy

I would get rid of Shelvey personally as doubt he will ever cut the mustard here and that's against
what I have said before when I did feel he looked promising but he's gone backwards.

His main problem is attitude as its seems to me as though he swaggers about the park kicking people
up in the air then either going for the Hollywood ball or a taking wild shot at goal.

You can see some players have a tactical brain and work the right areas, but this fella is just a wild horse
doing his own thing outside the context of the team and I don't think he has it in him to change.

Bit of a knob head really truth be told and I would move him on and I reckon they will with the right offer.

There where rumours he was out on the town a bit too much as well last season.

I did enjoy it when he had a pop at bacon face though

to be fair to john joe his head must be wrecked, less than 12 months ago rodgers pulled him aside during the filming of that fly on the wall documentary and told him that he saw him as a vital cog in the team for the next decade. now the echo is saying we are listening to offers for him.

then why is he being shipped out after just one season ?
im only a fan and from what i have seen of him he isnt good enough and obviously the club think the same if all rodgers was willing to play him in was a handful of games.
sorry you dont agree but IMO we got what we paid for and that was rubbish.

He had a chance to make his mark last year, and a few did to be honest, but this year will be
Rodgers own players.

Rodgers did give players a go and he tried to encourage Shelvey when we where short on
numbers going into the campaign, but that was then and this is now.

Shelvey simply does not belong in a Rodgers team so will no doubt have to find another club
to move his career forward.

do you not remember the conversation he had with flanagan in the first episode ?.
that was embarrassing and was like something one of the coaches would tell you at an under 12 training session.
maybe it was just the pressure of the cameras being there but it was a conversation he should have left out.

i think i watched the first episode, flicked through the next 2 and didnt bother watching any of the others mate so thankfully i must have missed that bit.
it was car crash telly at times but to be fair to rodgers the wheels were set in motion on that one before he arrived at the club.

Either sell him or send him on loan. He won't be getting enough game time to justify keeping hold of him otherwise.

I would like him to stay, but if his departure means a potential arrival of someone like Wanyama, then I'll pay for his bus.

I've never been sold on Shelvey, it's a gut feeling and someone somewhere on here (I think) summed it up well when they said he tries to play through the eyes of the fans as opposed to the player he actually is. His decision making is woeful and his ability isn't a 'class apart' and at times he looks (imo) more akin to a donkey than a footballer - harsh I know but that's my opinion. I also don't like the Charley big bollox attitude that he depicts and the whinging to the press he's partial to if he's not in the team.

Offers of 8M+ and I'd offload.
