He's a tall lad which should help when it comes to defending against route one stuff, God knows how many points we've thrown away in recent years due to our inability to defend crosses.

It's interesting that we have now signed 2 African players as we have not had to consider their continental tournament for years.
The squad will need to be strong to cover for Matip and Mane if they play in the African Nations...

After that Burnley debacle I'd throw Matip into the mix, replace Lovren at CB perhaps?

I'd even try him further up the pitch in a DM position

Can't do much worse in defence that what we have seen already, 2 games 5 goals conceded... :glare:

Klavan out for me. His severe lack of pace leaves us exposed on the counter. He seems decent on the ball, not quite sure he's good enough to start for us though.

Matip has looked a bit shaky himself though, especially against Mainz. Despite buying 2 CB's in the summer we'll probably end up with the same CB partnership as last year (Lovren + Sakho)

He looks really impressive and comfortable bringing the ball out. Carries it well going forward. Thought overall his defending today was pretty good, although noticed on one or two occasions he does grapple. Maybe was a bit lucky when he did it in the box. Looked like he was just standing his ground but on a closer look seemed to some holding going on

I like Matip. He's composed on the ball, can pick out a pass and is built like a brick sh!te house. He could be the player to sort our defensive woes if he keeps his head.

He played really well today I must admit, unlucky not to score as well with that header that clipped the bar.
The last 2 games Lovren and Matip have looked very assured together, early days I know but I'm a bit more confident about how our back 4 might shape up over the season than I was a week or so ago.

Finally felt like we had a solid defense yesterday. Matip is quick so he can keep up with fast strikers and has good positioning sense, besides being very composed and fluid on the ball. Reminded me a bit of Agger with his forward runs. Klavan isn't the best of back ups because he lacks pace and gets caught out sometimes. Lovren lacks a head and gets caught out sometimes. I'm hoping Matip and Sakho can be a solid defense.

Looks like Sakho is being pushed towards the exit door. Unless JK has a change of heart, I think Sakho's time at us is coming to an end

Have high hopes for this fella. FC Schalke 04 did everything they could to keep him, but he came here because he wanted a new challenge. He has all the materials to be a top defender. Let's hope he uses them well
