Lampard back to boost Chelsea's quest for Champions League glory
Last updated at 10:13am on 28th April 2008

Comments Comments

Frank Lampard is set to hand Chelsea a major boost and return to play in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Liverpool on Wednesday.

Lampard missed the 2-1 win over Manchester United on Saturday as he was on compassionate leave following the death of his mother Pat from pneumonia.

Manager Avram Grant has told the England midfielder that he can take as much time as he needs to recover but Lampard returned to training yesterday and wants to play against Liverpool.

The Chelsea players offered their own mark of respect for Lampard and his mother by holding a shirt with his number and her name on it after midfielder Michael Ballack scored the opening goal on Saturday.

Grant said: "The way the players reacted to Frank Lampard's situation made me very proud. We will leave the decision to play up to him. It is not easy what's happened. I will respect any decision. For me football is exciting, and very important but there are things more important."

If Lampard does return, Grant will have an interesting selection dilemma. Man-of-the-match Ballack can expect to partner the England midfielder with Claude Makelele, which will mean Michael Essien having to play at right-back.

Chelsea have now gone 19 games unbeaten in the Premier League and Ballack believes they have all the momentum going into the final weeks of the season.

He said: "I think we look fresh and better than all other teams, even in the Champions League right now. We are possibly just four games away from two big prizes and we have put ourselves in this situation."

Ballack had a bust-up with striker Didier Drogba on the pitch during the game over who would take a free kick but he insists there is no problem between them. "These things can happen on the pitch but after the game it's forgotten. It's football and we all want success."

Grant believes United are cracking under pressure and has taken heart from when he watched Leeds throw away the title in the 1971-2 season when they lost at Wolves on the final day to miss out to Derby by one point.

Chelsea are trailing on goal difference and even though Sir Alex Ferguson's side only have West Ham and Wigan to come, Grant is convinced they will slip up.

He said: "The first year I was in England when I was a child I remember Leeds needed one point against Wolves to win the championship and they lost. I believe United could do the same and drop points against West Ham and Wigan."

Wayne Rooney is struggling with a hip injury. The United striker aggravated the problem at Stamford Bridge and is a major doubt for tomorrow's Champions League semi-final with Barcelona. His absence would leave United with only Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo to choose from up front.

Ronaldo, named PFA Player of the Year for the second time last night, has looked jaded in his past four matches and will need to be at his best if the champions are to capitalise on last week's 0-0 draw in the Nou Camp.

Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas was named young player of the year but Chelsea did not have a player in the Premier League team of the year.

Team award: James (Portsmouth); Sagna (Arsenal), Ferdinand (Man Utd), Vidic (Man Utd), Clichy (Arsenal); Ronaldo (Man Utd), Gerrard (Liverpool), Fabregas (Arsenal), Young (Villa); Adebayor (Arsenal), Torres (Liverpool).

Anyway, what lineup would you bunch be comfortable with?
For me:

Kuyt           Alonso           Babel

oooh puntuation correction - since when was 'soccer' played with 10 men on the field - are you Hicks and Gillette in disguise - or is your main 'defensive player' in the 'wash room'  ???

I am really loathe to say it but d´ya reckon knowing the outcome of the game on tuesday, UEFA would take measures to keep LFC out of the final not being prepared to roll the dice on crowd control?

reg, uefa (mainly that twat guillard or however it's spelt) don't want us in the final. they couldn't bare having us in another final because uefa have always had a disliking to english clubs anyway, but in particular liverpool. uefa are bricking themselves of an all english final, i wouldn't be surprised if barcelona get one or two "generous" decisions tomorrow.
1) You'll Never Walk Alone
2) pass and move is the Liverpool groove
3) FIRST WILL ALWAYS BE FIRST AND SECOND WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING.
4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

I can live with Barcelona getting a couple of dodgey decisions John, it would be a pleasure to meet them in the final. I guess it would be better to influence tomorrows result rather than wednesday's as I dont know if a Man Utd v's Chelsea game would be any safer.

The TV companies want LFC in the final because they know they'll get tense drama and about 15M viewers.

If we aren't in it, then the audience will be sent into a coma of boredom as Barcelona slowly pass the ball around and......do nothing, Chelsea send environmentalists into hysteria by bringing so many plastic flags to Moscow, and the commentators remind the viewers 380 times that Man U won the European Cup in 1999....and probably mention 1966 too.

Part of me wants to see Crouch play in a 4-4-2 ('let's go for it' and all that), but I think we need the extra man in midfield - in Alonso - to help us retain possession and control the midfield. I think it'd be tough for Mascherano - who we can assume would be the one to hold the midfield if we went with a 4-4-2 - to cope with Ballack, Lampard, Essien - all very atheltic, direct, and dynamic CM's. Gerrard would obviously be there too, but he might get dragged into a war of attrition in the middle in that formation, when he really needs to be in and around the top third as he's such a potent striking threat. We need to control the midfield in order to keep possession, and mount attacks. Although it may seem a more defensive approach to go with the extra CM as opposed to a striker, I think it's the most critical area of the pitch that we need to control if we're going to get a foothold in the game. It's no good having an extra striker on the pitch if you haven't control of the game. In conclusion, I'd go with a

4-4-2  :wwww  :D
