Depay was attracting widespread attention, following a campaign that saw him score 28 goals and set up another eight in 40 games for PSV Eindhoven in 2014/15, when the Reds emerged as leading candidates.

The Netherlands international was poised to leave his home nation, and Brendan Rodgers praised him as a “very talented player,” confirming that Liverpool “need a goal threat for next year.”

PSV sporting director Marcel Brands – now of Everton – even described the Reds and Paris Saint-Germain as being “a step ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Memphis.”

He ultimately signed for United in a £25 million transfer that summer, with The Athletic‘s Simon Hughes picking up the story of how Liverpool saw their “confusing” stance ruin a done deal.

Hughes explains that the club “were willing to spend £25 million plus add-ons,” and that Tottenham‘s interest in Adam Lallana would allow them to “fund some of the fee.”

A ‘Merseyside-based source’ adds that Depay would have joined Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho as “one of the highest-paid players at the club,” and that “it looked like everything was agreed.”

However, Hughes continues that an injury to Sturridge forced the Reds’ focus to switch to signing a striker, with Christian Benteke brought in as the club “asked Depay to wait.”

“Sources close to the player suggest Liverpool’s approach was confusing,” Hughes writes, adding “he was asked to wait but nobody told him how long.”

That wait paved the way for United to swoop, and though his spell at Old Trafford was a disappointment, he has now revived his career over four years with Lyon – playing, in a blow to his former suitor, as a centre-forward.

Depay scored 22 and assisted 12 in 40 games last season, and overall with the French club he has struck 76 times and teed up a further 55 goals in 178 appearances.

Now, he is into the final fortnight of his contract with Lyon, and though Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has insisted this week that a deal is “almost there,” it is a situation Liverpool should be monitoring again.

Koeman told reporters on Wednesday that “it’s not signed yet,” and perhaps this time around it could be the Reds that steal a march on their rivals.

It is clear that Jurgen Klopp would hope to add to his attacking ranks this summer, and a proven, versatile forward such as Depay would complement the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino well.

On a free, it is surely a no-brainer, though whether Depay would be willing to join the club who messed him around six years ago is another matter entirely.

He was garbage at United but to be fair that can happen, Zaha was garbage there too but he’s clearly a good player. When I’ve seen Depay he has impressed but his age would concern me, was he a kid when he joined United or was he already in his mid 20’s? If he was in his mid 20’s he’d be pushing 30 now. If he’s still only 27 or something then on a free as you say it would be a no brainer, even if he doesn’t go straight into the starting XI he’d certainly improve the squad.

Just checked, he’s 27 and won’t be 28 until next February so yeah he’s got at least 3 good years in him. Be a shrewd bit of business that to get him for nothing.

Depay would be a great signing on a bosman, but I thought he was going to Barca?

Looks like Leicester have got the Daka deal sewn up for £30m. He'll be announced next week.

Hopefully he turns into another Werner to make us feel better about another failed transfer.

Let's get Mbappe.

Not sure it's a failed transfer if we were never interested in Daka!

Fabrizio Romano who has been quite reliable in the past posted the news on his twitter account.

If true it would be a pity about Daka, he’s probably no world beater but he may have been able to help out if we have another goal drought like last season. That goal drought after Christmas sunk our season to the extent we very nearly went from champions to missing out on the top 4. Even with all the injuries and chopping and changing our back line we were top at Christmas, it was our inability to score, not to defend, which ultimately cost us.

£30m sounds like a lot for him though. I was thinking we can get him for less than £20m.

If the lad chose to go to Leicester then clearly Liverpool were never interested. Good luck to him though and good to see Leicester are investing to ensure they don't implode yet again.

Shanks' last game was the 1974 FA Cup Final when we beat Newcastle 3-0 in a fantastic game, equal to anything we see today. LFC went out and cherry picked the 2 standout players in the Barcode side, Barney Rubble and Terry Mac. Watch a replay of the game, Terry and AK stood out, Malcolm MacDonald flopped. LFC now, are not cherry picking, we still have a transfer policy of looking to buy untapped talent. We're not going to dominate for 5-10 years basis bargains. We need to bring in a world class MF to replace Gini, Keita, Shaq, possibly Ox and Milly this season and looking to replace Hendo and Thiago in 1-2 years. Spend money and be forever grateful we did.

Again we're looking for the untapped talent for the front 3. We have Origi and Bobby having to decide whether he can continue on the role. Buy the best there is without paying crazy prices.

Shanks and Bob targeted their man and in most cases they lifted the team to the next level.

Damjan thought this Daka lad was worth £20m. We don't need £20m players, that's Everton quality.
Buy the best there is and the sponsors will stump up the cash basis success.

Sponsers stumping up for players ?!

The club will continue to work how they have for the past 6 years - finding the players that best work in the system and that will fit within the budget of the club

Not always about spending the most and getting the best

Chelsea spent how much on Werner and we spent less on Jota - which one was the better buy

Surely we have learned to trust Edwards and his team

It's funny when people are upset that Chelsea outspend us yet we've finished ahead of them for the past 4 seasons.

I get what you're saying Reg but that's not always true. For comparison, Haaland went to Dortmund for around 20m euros when everyone knew him, even though he was still playing in Salzburg. That just goes to show price doesn't always equal quality, and no way Daka is worth more than Haaland was worth an year ago.

I hope Daka ends up in the prem next season anyway and with any luck it will be with us. 20mil isnt a lot these days for a lad with his talent.

We always talk about scouting the best up and coming talent so I would be surprised if he wasnt on our radar or at least scouted. Our problem is we have no clinical goalscorers and 80% of what we do score comes from one man who is getting on. That needs to be addressed this summer.

Rodgers claimed he wanted Van Dijk when he moved for 12 million quid but was told no that the timing wasnt right. Then we went and paid 6 times that 2 years later which is just baffling. We should be avoiding repeat situations like this.

Everyone was raving about Haaland at Saltzburg and Dakas record is just as prolific if not better. Based on that alone he is worth 7 minaminos, 3 Origis, 2 Shaqs and an Ox.
