Liverpool line up summer bid for Spanish star

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has stepped up the chase for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez.

Martinez, 21, has been on Liverpool's radar for the past two seasons but Benitez is putting together his hit-list for next season.

Liverpool sent a scout to watch Martinez at Atletico Madrid last Thursday and Bilbao are well aware of Benitez's interest.

Bilbao coach Joaquin Caparros said: "Javier is a monster of a player and can go very far."

So Lucas, Mash, Aquilani, Gerrard... how many central midfielders do we need?!

I'd happily swap Lucas like  :D
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

We have been linked with the lad Martinez for the past couple of years. He is very highly rated and thought to be suited to football in this country based on his physical attributes; as well as his footballing skills. He is more of a forward thinking midfielder who I think would do a good job in beside Mascherano. However at 21 years old he is probably in the "one for the future" bracket rather than someone who can come in and make a big impact straight away.

We were supposedly interested in him before we signed Aquilani...... maybe another indicator that Aquilani may not stay?

I would see him as competition for Mascherano and Lucas in the midfield (although he is better going forward than that pair) and that would leave Aquaman and Gerrard competing for the advanced midfield role.

I would support a move for Martinez.

Yes please and we'll take Figuero (left back) as well thanks Mr Martinez  :buttrock

Rodallega would be a good player. He has shone in a less than average Wigan team this year. He looks a handful upfront and can also play out wide. I reckon he fits into the Rafa mould of being a hard worker and able to play in a couple of positions.

Used to be just what we needed , whether there is anything left of that great player I am not sure , scored about 20 goals last season so still knows where the net is. Small, light, not particularly fast, could have problems if he came. For free might be worth a gamble, but his wages will cause a real problem.

I think its got morientes written all over it.

Raul was a great striker... but weather he'll still have it next season, in a new faster, tougher league, I dont know.

Liverpool on alert as Raul is tipped to leave Real Madrid on a free this summer

Liverpool have been linked with a shock move for Real Madrid icon Raul.

The 32-year-old is no longer a regular at the Bernabeu, starting just nine of 29 La Liga games since Manuel Pellegrini became boss in the summer.

And the Madrid captain, who has played more than 700 games for the Spanish giants, could be set for a summer exit.

Raul has previously suggested he would be tempted by a shot a Barclays Premier League football before the end of his career and Liverpool are said to be offering a two-year contract.

There has also been long-standing interest from the United States, where Raul could net a luctative swansong, but the Anfield option would be tempting if he feels his time at Madrid has come to a natural end.

However, it should be noted that Liverpool's interest emanates from the Catalan press rather than the Spanish capital, and Raul has not spoken out against his treatment by Pellegrini.

Rafa Benitez would be looking for a free transfer for Raul, though Madrid have him on 'lifetime contract' and it is suggested they would be more amenable to him leaving for the MLS.

No thanks Raul. Pack your bags and head to the US as you wouldn't hack in the EPL. Not at 32 years of age.

Raul has still got it.

Higuain is on fire, and they spent a ton on Benzema, and sometime Ronaldo plays as a striker . . .

He knows where the goal is. Would be our 2nd best striker.

To all the people saying 'no thanks'  you do know that we have very little money and David N'gog as our backup to Torres.

I would take Raul.

Guti is going to be on a free this summer as well... he's 33 but maybe a better choice than Lucas?
