Liverpool have made enquiries for Fiorentina's former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi.
The Italy international has a £28million release clause but Liverpool will hope to drive the price down for the 27-year-old.
He has had a succession of knee ligament injuries but bounced back to score 16 goals in 22 games last season.
Born in the USA, Rossi shot to prominence at Parma before United snapped him up at 17. He began to shine in the reserve team but the competition for first team places was such that they agreed to sell him to Villarreal for £7m in 2007.
He had a successful spell in La Liga and Tottenham tried to sign him prior to a knee injury in 2011.
Rossi can play off a main striker and can lead the line. Although only 5ft 8ins tall he has strength and great technique combined with pace and an obvious eye for goal.
His knees will be a concern following the collapse of Loic Remy's deal but his track record intimates he would be a success at Anfield if a deal can be struck.
