the gaffer refers to Dirk Kuyt , not Downing . here's the genuine article

United and Reds keen on Portuguese starlet

Setanta.com understands that Manchester United and Liverpool are after Daniel Carrico.

The 20-year-old Sporting defender has been a revelation in the Portuguese league this season, and both Premier League heavyweights have sent scouts to observe his progress.

Carrico started the season with Sporting’s second team, but he was promoted into the first-team following Tonel’s injury, and was subsequently voted the best young player of the month twice in the Super Liga.

The promising Portuguese is under contract until 2013, and his buy-out clause is believed to reach £19 million.

He was educated at the famous Academia de Alcochete, where Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani had spells.

When asked about the possibility of moving to either United or Liverpool, the young Carrico has refused to comment.

a better option than downing...

from the daily mail:

Yuri Zhirkov
CSKA Moscow, 25A skilful and versatile left-sided player dubbed Russia's Ronaldinho. The raiding wide man operates effectively down the wing for Roman Abramovich's favourite club but was deployed at full back in Russia's march to the Euro 2008 semi-finals. Occasionally pops up with a spectacular goal, though he is more of a provider.

Would suit: Chelsea seem in pole position for his summer signature, though he is likely to cost at least £15million. Would also be a good successor to Ryan Giggs at Manchester United or could improve Liverpool's left. Definitely in top four class

no link to us.. but an option??

What is it that makes people think marketable players from relegated teams are cheaper?

That's not been the case for about five years as far as I can see.

Yes they do.

no they don't. Silva can play on the right or behind the striker, but he is left footed and probably spends more time on the left than he does anywhere else.

i would say there price does drop a little as you will see i only dropped the price by 2 mill which is not a great drop?

i would also say it has a lot to do with what ever wage his is on if he is on a high wage they might look to get shot of him so that they do not have to worry about that part, i think it would have a lot to do with the owners and what they think is the best options with there money?

well that kind of answers my question in that we could still go for him even if we did get downing
