Question: Jeff, Blackwood
I'm a Liverpool fan and strongly believe that under Rafa the Premiership will arrive....but when? Do you feel that Rafa however has the tools both personally and from the owners to deliver?
Breaking the Barca/Madrid stranglehold in Spain seems a while ago now.
What are your thoughts?
Guillem:
I think it has to be said that Liverpool are moving forward under Rafa Benitez.
However, what separates them from Manchester United and Chelsea is money. Every time that Liverpool spend 20 odd million pounds on a player, Man Utd go out and buy three or four 20 million pound players. It’s makes bridging that gap very hard, and when you look back over the last 5-6 seasons it becomes clear that this is repeated year after year.
That’s not to say that all is lost and Liverpool will never be able to catch up. I have the impression that away from the financial differences, actually on the field of play there are just a couple of small differences separating Liverpool from the top two in the Premiership. If Liverpool could somehow rectify those issues, then they would go some way in closing the gap.
Firstly, Liverpool must improve the quality of the first eleven. Take for example the Champions League game against Chelsea. If Liverpool could have swapped left –backs with their opponents then I’m pretty sure that Liverpool would have gone through to the final.
Secondly, Liverpool must improve defensively. They drew a lot of games when a more solid defense might have seen them pick up all three points. Injuries to key players – most notably Agger – left them under strength and they became over dependant upon Sami Hyypia who was forced to play far too many games as a result.
Finally, Liverpool are held back by not having what Rafa would call, in Spanish, a ‘desequilibrante’ player: quite literally, someone who can unbalance the opposition – one of those rare talents, a magical playmaker who can regularly beat his man , who can unlock a defence and cause havoc amongst the oppositions ranks. But those kinds of players cost a lot of money, the kind of money that that Liverpool doesn’t have. That is partly why Xabi Alonso will be sold to Juve

A number of you have been asking questions relating to David Villa and a move to Liverpool. Here's just a couple of your questions...
Jonny, Liverpool asks:
With all the news surrounding Valencia's financial difficulties, and with all the fantastic talent they possess in their players (villa, silva, joaquin etc), and due to the ties Rafa Benitez has with them, do you see any of them moving mersey-bound?
If not, where do you think they will end up?
Mode, Madrid Reds: Has Liverpool FC ever enquired about Villa ..or is he completely out of LFC’s transfer budget this summer at that price?
Guillem replies:
We've had loads of people asking about David Villa, Valencia and Liverpool, so I’ll tackle all of your questions at once guys.
I’m under the impression that Rafa does not consider Valencia as a place to go shopping. Valencia is a club in crisis, and Rafa, as a former manager, does not want to pour fuel on the fire at the Mestalla.
Forget about Joaquin going to Liverpool. He’s simply not up to the standard required at Anfield and his name shouldn’t even be getting mentioned in the same sentence. Add to that list Riera of Espanyol. There has been no approach so far.
David Silva could end up at Barcelona, who have made contact with Valencia, but he will not go cheaply. One thing is certain though, almost everyone at Valencia has a price.
With regards to David Villa, I can say that there has been no contact from Liverpool. He has had loads of calls from Spurs, from Chelsea and from Real Madrid and Barcelona. Inter Milan have also made a firm offer to Valencia for his services. It had been suggested in the Spanish press that Real Madrid had agreed a deal, but that has since been denied. Personally I think he will end up at either Chelsea, Barcelona or Real Madrid.
With regard to Liverpool, I’m not even sure whether or not Rafa is on the lookout for a striker. Let me put it another way: while Crouch is still there, there is no need for another striker. When - and if- he goes, then it will be a matter of finding a different forward to Torres.
