Liverpool Football Club - The Rumour Mill

RAFA BENITEZ will go full steam ahead for a winger once Andrea Dossena’s £7million move to Liverpool is confirmed today.
The Udinese left-back has agreed terms and the deal will be rubber-stamped if there are no problems arising from Wednesday’s medical.
Next on Benitez’ hitlist is a £10m raid for Newcastle’s James Milner or unsettled Espanyol star Albert Riera.
Benitez wants Daniel Alves from Seville but the club will not pay £20m while he thinks Blackburn’s David Bentley is over-priced at £15m.
Riera, 26, wants out at Espanyol. He said: “I want to leave but I do not know if I’ll go to Liverpool.”
But Benitez is unlikely to pursue Cardiff wonderboy Aaron Ramsey, 17, who is also a Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton target.

Liverpool ponder shock £6million Gunners swoop
06:25 June, 6, 2008
Nicklas Bendtner has emerged as a shock target for Liverpool Football Club.

The Danish international striker endured an often frustrating campaign with Arsenal, demonstrated with his on-field spat with team-mate Emmanuel Adebayor during the Carling Cup defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

It is understood, though, that Rafael Benitez has been quietly impressed with the young forward, who was a key player during a loan spell in Birmingham City’s promotion season of 2006/07.

The Spaniard is reportedly willing to pay around £6million for Bendtner, but it would be a huge surprise if Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will part with the 22-year-old, particularly to a rival Big Four club.

Liverpool go cool on Aaron Ramsey

Jun 5 2008 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL'S interest in Aaron Ramsey is unlikely to lead to a formal offer being made for the Welsh wonderkid.

The Reds have monitored Ramsey’s progress for more than a year and Rafa Benitez is an admirer of his obvious talent but the Liverpool manager knows his priority is to improve the first team this summer and is reluctant to spend a sizeable chunk of his transfer budget on a teenager with just 22 games to his name.

Cardiff City have accepted bids in the region of £5m for the 17-year-old midfielder from Man United, Everton and Arsenal but at that price, Liverpool’s interest is likely to cool.

Benitez has identified several areas of his squad which he is keen to strengthen with the full-back and wide positions being top of his list and Liverpool’s transfer activity will be centred on those areas.

Philipp Degen has already been snapped up and Liverpool are waiting for the formalities of Andrea Dossena’s medical to be completed before finalising his transfer from Udinese.

The £7m fee Liverpool have agreed with Udinese is based on an up front payment of £6m with add-ons and incentives.

Though Benitez would like to be able to move for Ramsey he is not willing to sacrifice other transfer targets whom he feels will have a more immediate impact.

As the Reds boss reshapes his squad ahead of the forthcoming campaign there is no shortage of interest in those members of his squad who have fallen out of favour.

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has admitted for the first time that he would like to take Peter Crouch back to Fratton Park, although he is unwilling to meet Benitez’s £15m asking price.

While Roma have firmed up their long standing interest in John Arne Riise with an opening offer for the Norwegian only for it to fall short of Liverpool’s valuation.

Redknapp said: “I don’t know if the avenue for Peter Crouch is shut or not. If Liverpool are asking £15m for him it is certainly shut.

“I like Peter, but he belongs to Liverpool at the moment.

“If the price is right something could happen. If they wanted £10m it would certainly be more interesting. We do need another front man.”

Meanwhile, Steve Finnan has revealed he is considering coming out of international retirement to play for new Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni.

The Ireland manager is keen to persuade the Reds right back to return to the international fold and Finnan says he is planning to hold talks with Trapattoni.

“We’re going to have a chat,” he said. “When a new manager comes in that's normal, and out of respect you have to do so.

“The opportunity to work with someone of that experience is very tempting. He's got a great CV and he’s done really well at lots of clubs. Everyone in my position would consider it.

“No deadline's been put on making a final decision but I take it he'll want to know before the first World Cup qualifier.”

Liverpool very close to £20m star: Fantastic player who is at his peak!

June 5, 2008

And so the Gareth Barry saga enters its latest chapter, and it appears that the only factor standing between the Villa skipper and an Anfield move is the small matter of an extra £8m or so!

Aston Villa are demanding a higher price from Liverpool for Gareth Barry than Liverpool’s initial £10m bid. Martin O’Neill’s valuation is closer to £20m. Any bid could also include a potential swap deal involving Scott Carson or John Arne Riise. (The Guardian)

I think this whole deal will be completed soon enough, understandably Martin O’Neill wants to make as much as he can from any deal that occurs. I would have thought that a player-plus-cash deal would suit the club better, especially as both Carson and Riise still have a great deal to offer and, conveniently for Benitez, both players don’t have much of a future at the club. So do Liverpool fans think Barry is worth the wait and would Villa fans rather take the money or the cash plus players swap?

Liverpool Face Competition For Thiago
Monaco have declared their firm interest in Brazilian defender Thiago Silva, who is also reported to be a target for Rafa Benitez's Liverpool.

hiago has been in stellar form for Fluminese, and his rapid development has not gone unnoticed by Carlos Dunga, who has rewarded him with call-ups to the national squad.

Monaco boss Ricardo, a former Fluminese player himself, had this to say about the highly promising 23-year-old:  "He is a huge player, an ace.

"If we can attract him at Monaco, we will be good in defence. I will do my best to have him."

If Thiago does opt to sign for the French Principality club, they would actually become his third European team. In 2004, FC Porto signed the player, but he ended up being sold to Dynamo Moscow after one year of play in the second team.

Milan, Villarreal and Bayer Leverkusen are also known to be keen on Thiago, along with his former club Porto and their Portuguese rivals Benfica.

Finally, Liverpool in for £12m wing wizard: Many fans want it to happen!

June 5, 2008

Ricardo Quaresma has taken one big step towards ending years of speculation by nearing a Porto exit, after his club were named and shamed yesterday. This has led to many speculating that Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez may finally be able to put in a bid for the Portuguese talent.

Porto have been expelled from the UEFA Champions League Matters are made worse still by the fact that Porto - traditionally a selling club to Europe’s elite - will most likely be forced to part with many of their wanted stars for a cut price due to their disqualification from European football and its financial implications. Ricardo Quaresma, Lucho Gonzalez and Lisandro Lopez are just three players who have been linked to a handful of Europe’s elite over the past few months and may be heading for hastier exits than first imagined. (Goal.com)

Apparently, the 24-year-old could now be available for around £12m as his club face the very real prospect of a mass exodus. Inter Milan’s new boss Jose Mourinho has also taken a fancy to the flair player, but it seems that Rafa, a long term admirer, can now bid for the star. Would Liverpool fans welcome a bid from Rafa B for Ricardo Q?

Liverpool lead Inter in race to sign £15 million Portuguese midfielder

Liverpool are leading Inter Milan in the race to sign Porto midfielder Ricardo Quaresma. Reds boss Rafa Benitez has been a long-term admirer of the player and he is willing to bid as much as £15 million for the Portuguese international. (fansfc)

Quaresma is more than likely to leave the Portuguese this summer after it was confirmed yesterday that the club have been thrown out of next seasons Champions League after Porto were accused of match fixing. The 24-year old is also wanted by Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho, who used to work with the player at Porto.

I personally would prefer to see Quaresma play in England. On his day, he is a terrific wide-midfield player that would scare any wing-backs in the Premier League. I must admit, Quaresma can sometime be one of the most overrated players in the world, but all in all I feel he would only strengthen the Liverpool squad

Rafa lines up £70m Liverpool spending spree: A busy summer ahead!

June 4, 2008

Liverpool boss Rafa must not get much sleep these days as it appears, if you believe the tabloids, that he spends every waking moment planning a transfer raid or some kind!

Liverpool’s American owners are expected to hand Benitez £20 million to enhance his squad but Benitez is hoping he can also raise £50 million from player sales to ensure a massive summer spending spree.

Benitez is hoping to be able to raise £50 million from the sales of players such as Xabi Alonso, Peter Crouch, Scott Carson, John Arne Riise, Jermaine Pennant, Steve Finnan and Andriy Voronin.

He will then use the money to help strengthen his squad and is reported to have his eye on Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry as well as Andrew Dossena from Udinese. Liverpool have also this week confirmed the transfer of defender Philipp Degen, albeit on a free transfer. (News of the World and Goal.com)

Whilst it’s true that Liverpool need new players, do they really need to spend that much? Yes they fell behind the title chasing pack last season, but they surely have the nucleus of a team to challenge in the future. Clearly Barry and Dossena are very high up on his list, but who else do Liverpool fans feel should be in the manager’s thoughts?

Don't rate Barry at all. Couldn't care less if he's an international....sure, so is Lescott, and he's bleedin' awful. It means nothing...
O'Neill is laughing all the way to the bank with this one. Wait and see if he picks another young fella from obscurity and plonks him into his place, and he'll probably do just as well

£17m star to choose between Arsenal and Spurs: Liverpool might be a better option?

June 4, 2008

As La Liga side Valencia concede defeat and place their prized possession on the open market, three teams appear to be heading the chase for a goalscorer par excellence.

Arsenal and Tottenham will do battle over Valencia striker David Villa, who has been made available for around £17m. (Daily Telegraph)

Valencia’s David Villa, shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or in his first season at the Mestalla, is coveted by Liverpool, who will need to spend £20million-plus to coax him to Anfield. (Aberdeen Press and Journal)

David Villa’s a talent well worth fighting over, but I would imagine that the current valuation could increase significantly if he performs well at Euro 2008. Liverpool fans have been speculating and salivating at the prospect of the Spaniard teaming up with El Nino whilst Arsenal supporters will be keen to get a lethal finisher to add to their impressive playing staff, and Spurs may well see the Valencia man as a potential replacement for Dimitar Berbatov who may or may not be on his way. Whose fans want him the most?
