Personally I'm quite looking forward to playing Barcelona in the Super Cup next season.

Did we view Houllier's penultimate season as a "success"? I'd say it was as much an abject DISAPPOINTMENT as this is destined to be with Rafa at the helm. Both occaisions we finished 2nd with 80+ points

08/09 vs 01/02

Premiership : 2nd (08/09) vs 2nd (01/02)
Champions League : QF (08/09) vs QF (01/02)
FA Cup : R4 (08/09) vs R4 (01/02)
League Cup : R4 (08/09) vs R3 (01/02)

Pretty darned similar, one round further in the League Cup last season than in 01/02

09/10 vs 02/03

Premiership : 6th* (09/10) vs 5th (02/03)
Champions League : L32 (09/10) vs L32 (02/03)
FA Cup : R3 (09/10) vs R4 (02/03)
League Cup : R4 (09/10) vs WINNERS (02/03)
UEFA Cup :  SF* (09/10) vs QF (02/03)

*subject to change

Apart from doing better in our second shot at Europe this time and winning the League Cup in 02/03, again all too bleeding similar. We win the tin pot and finish 5th in the Premiership and it will just be same outcome (won a tinpot and finished 5th) just different tin pot.

Any which way you dress it up, to call this season a success would be a joke - and not very good one at that. We've won only 23 games out of 49 and this could be the first time under Rafa we've not won 30+ games in a season since his first season in charge. We simply can't afford not to be in Europe, people witter on about the lack of funds Rafa has and yet this is another example of not putting two and two together to come up with four. Winning trophies back in Shankly's day may have been THE only goal, but these days money rules to such an extent it's nowhere near as simple as trying to win everything. I think Rafa realises he may have to make a sacrifice this season and I fear the sacrifice is fourth - taking Torres off against brum 30 mins from the end when we needed to win, taking him off with five mins to go when we were all but home against Benfica. Obviously those THIRTY minutes he rested against brum made the world of difference..................................

looks better for rafas C.V. if we win europajoke cup. plus very strange the doctor coming out and saying torres can play next week. Maybe am being skepitical but sounds the same as when aquilani viruses turnup the day before each away european fixture. I think rafa is saving torres for europe.

personally i care.

p!ss poor season i agree.

Winning any trophy league cup or europa league i want to win.

More than coming fourth and winning nothing is my opinion.
Fourth will NEVER be remembered. And while i agree this trophy is not coveted, its a trophy.
Thats all i watch football for.

But each to their own.

I agree mate, while gaining a CL place would no doubt be of greater benefit to the club, as a fan its trophies that we celebrate.

lakes and i am sure its the same with us all.
But we are not.

So sneaking 4th or winning any trophy....well i want the trophy.
Yeah i see how important fourth is, but i have never had a day out like winning a final be it the champions league win or when i went two league cup finals in 01 and o3 (against united).
I wont look back on fourth one year in 10 years, although i can see why fans see the bigger picture.

I think that is a little bit beyond us this season mate, the Europa league is at least a possibility.

Never be embarrassed to win a cup. Celebrate every victory. Cups add to our history, our winning culture and attract young players to the club.

If you want to be embarrassed, cross the park where they never win anything.

Im with you Reg and  going off a slight tangent is what p...ses me off about mentality these days which started IMO when ManU devalued the FA Cup a few years back and Roman's arrival at Chelsea.

Unless your league and European champion double winners its no worth going out on to the pitch attitude

I will be absolutely made up if we win Europa, however it will not make up for disappointing season which doesnt take into account much documented off field problems with owners.

This season league campaign  is even a more bitter pill to swallow considering how close we came last year

For me the Eurodisney league is just so much a poor consolation, it is like the LDV vans or whatever you call it because the top sides in the category are not in it. At least with the Carling Cup the top sides that can enter do, and while they might not all treat it as a serious competition, their second string are still better than some of the first XIs

As for will it make this season a success? Not if you consider we might not even be in the top five teams in England so what will that say about any competition we win?

We weren't in the top four when we won the CL in 05.

Although, I agree, it's poor consolation. I would still like to see Liverpool win it.
