Successful season?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Dundalk » Thu Apr 08, 2010 11:31 pm

So this is the scenario.....

We win the Europa League and finish fifth

United finish second in the league - trophyless

Arsenal finish third in the league - trophyless

And so at the end of a disastrous season which promised so much, would you classify us as having a better season that United and Arsenal or are we just papering over the cracks?

Its been a poor season no matter what happens now, our expectations were much higher than this (certainly mine were), but a trophy would certainly take the edge off it, and might also ease any problems in the squad from lack of achievement. For most of the players it would be the first thing they have won with Liverpool so I am sure they would be delighted to finally get a medal.

Dreadful season full stop.

Even if Liverpool get 4th and win the Euro thingy.

Winning the Uefa cup would help hide the embarrassment, but the root problem obviously remains.

Performance wise it has been a terrible season, off the field it has been a terrible season. But if we win the Europa league I will still be immensely proud ofthe team.

Performances were better last season but we finished second and only made it one round further in the CL.

The loss of CL money next year (even though Europa give you some) means that failure to make fourth will make it a not successful season whether we win the Europa Cup. Having said that we must try everything to win it as it is a major trophy and I will be happy if we do. I am just happy the team is now playing better than in the beginning of the season and I do not see why we cannot win Europa and finish fourth.

Are you having a laugh or just easily pleased?

I'm sure united are going to be gutted and would love to swap places...

Finishing fifth is a fucking disgrace. The Europa League is still an embarrassment but because we play with pride in any competition we go out to win it.

no. Not a successful season. Just papering over the cracks I'm afraid.

Poor results, poor performances.

Not making the champions league is shocking. NOt just in terms of not being in the top european competition or in terms of the money, but also attracting players. I know that we are Liverpool and that should count for a lot. But when good players want to leave their club to play in the champions league, it could put us at a disadvantage. We could claim - but its just one season, but with city spending power, it might be harder than we think to compete for the top four if the current financial situation continues.

Well we've known it's a poor season for a while now, but you can't go backwards you can only go forwards so we really ought to go all out to win this cup thing. I don't buy into the idea that if we did and other teams won less it would have been MORE successful for us, but I certainly would rather win the European Copa thing than win nothing for another season. Now I've convinced myself Rafa will be here for another season, he's obviously got more chance of winning something or doing well next season if we do win something this time around, so it could be hugely beneficial.

Fourth and a cup from where we were would be a good achievement. Failing the fourth, just winning something would rekindle the memories a bit and fire us up for next time. At least reaching a final would be something.
