And so at the end of a disastrous season which promised so much, would you classify us as having a better season that United and Arsenal or are we just papering over the cracks?

Calm your face down you muppet.

I personally think make the knock out stages of the CL is our ball park, being relegated to the Europa League is nothing short of an embarrassment.

I still want us to win it but the whole situation is embarrassing. You may not think so but you're probably happy with the state of things in the league as well.

Its been a dreadful season there is no getting away from that.
But if we were to get to this final and win a trophy then it would be a good consolation.
For me its all about getting to finals and winning trophies and that is something that alot of these players havent done with Liverpool.
I am sure the for likes of Mascherano and Torres winning something would ensure their further commitment to the cause.
We have been shocking in the league though and winning this while will be a good thing, it will definately be papering over the cracks of the worst season since Houlliers last one.

given the choice of 4th place or UEFA cup glory i'm with the majority that 4th place is preferred (given the consequences of losing our best players, the club finances etc), and i will be highly disapointed if we fail to get CL qualification.

However in the unlikely event we secure both the cup + league position, it would be churlish to define the season as an abject failure (our away from home form is certainly abject, though )

To guarantee a significant push on from the over-achievement of last season would have required solid investment - instead we have sold players to service debt/finance contracts for our top (under-performing) players.

We all have our opinions on what should have happened this season, but looking at it pragmatically, 4th+UEFA is better than we (or arsenes golden boys) have achieved in 5 or 6 years :p

Are you having a laugh or just easily pleased?

I'm sure united are going to be gutted and would love to swap places...

Finishing fifth is a fucking disgrace. The Europa League is still an embarrassment but because we play with pride in any competition we go out to win it.

If you read it again I am asking a question not making a statement. Notice the question mark in the topic title.

From there it us up to you what your opinion is, recently on here Igor asked if it would be better to get rid of the owners or Rafa, have a look at it and you will see, like this, that surprise surprise not everyone picks the obvious answer

I don't buy into the idea that if we did and other teams won less it would have been MORE successful for us, but I certainly would rather win the European Copa thing than win nothing for another season. Now I've convinced myself Rafa will be here for another season, he's obviously got more chance of winning something or doing well next season if we do win something this time around, so it could be hugely beneficial.

Fourth and a cup from where we were would be a good achievement. Failing the fourth, just winning something would rekindle the memories a bit and fire us up for next time. At least reaching a final would be something.

You know what  Mick that is agood post for an anti :p

If we win the Europa cup and finish fourth it will be a good season considering how we started the season. If we win the Europa cup but couldn't finish fourth, it will be a disappointing season. But the cup will be a consolation. Anyone who says the Europa cup is an embarrassment is deluded. It's one of the two 'major' trophy we won under Houllier after all.

The really annoying thing from my point of view mate is for most of the season we have not just played poorly, but that we havent even performed at all. We all know that we have a couple of weaker areas in the team, but we can still play great football ......we just haven't. You can blame the team, you can blame the manager (my choice) or even Hicks and Gillett, but the fact remains the team is good enough to be challenging for the title, especially this season when I think the standards have dropped significantly and the top 3 clubs are probably weaker than they have been for years.

Papering over the cracks is probably the best we can do and IF we win the Europa League AND get 4th place, we would still have had a terrible season.

Nothing wrong in asking the question though mate

The Europa League is more or less... the looser's cup :D.Those that dont make it in the CL (those that lose in the CL) go to the Europa League, and we, one of the biggest clubs in the world went there, so it is a bit embarrassing. It's still a title tho.But if we win this title, and get 4th, and United get 2nd for example, I dont see why we wouldnt have a good season.A title and a qualification for the CL.And that IMO is a good season. If we improve in the next season I am sure that we'll forget all about this season... if we do win the title and finish 4th that is.

If we start to think that the europa cup is an embarrassment, that means credit Must go to rafa. Under him we have been a perennial powerhouse in the CL and to be demoted to Europa becomes an embarrassment. Whereas under houllier we didn't even looked like we belong in the CL.

I dont understand this europa cup embarrassment mularky.

Never be embarrassed to win a cup. Celebrate every victory. Cups add to our history, our winning culture and attract young players to the club.

If you want to be embarrassed, cross the park where they never win anything.

the problem is mate that we are going backwards even in Europe.

2006/7 - FINALIST
2007/8 - SEMI -FINAL
2008/9 - QUARTER - FINAL
2009/10 GROUP STAGE
2010/11 WILL WE EVEN QUALIFY ?

Hardly progression ?

Nice to see you posting Judge

The scenario outlined DD wouldnt make ours a successful season - Liverpool set their targets according to what we want and desire, NOT what our rivals aim for. In terms of silverware it would give us something to brag about for a bit but the reality is we may have to go and defend it the next season which is an indicator of mediocrity
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road
