He was great tonight, he made five or six passes that Alonso would of had trouble executing, the one for Torres`s second was a great ball. Also a very calm finish.
Looks like we might have the player we hoped we had signed.
Anyone else lookin forward to next season?  :D

Alberto Aquilani spoke of his pride after scoring his first Liverpool goal at the Kop end in a 4-1 win over Portsmouth.

The Italy international marked his first Barclays Premier League 90 minutes with a neatly-taken strike in front of the famous stand.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.tv down the tunnel afterwards, Aquilani said: "I feel really good because I've scored my first goal after a really long time. I'm also really happy because of the result - we needed that.

"The goal is even more special because I scored it in front of the Kop. I said when I arrived in Liverpool that I wanted to score in front of the Kop and that moment has arrived.

"I think I will find it hard to sleep tonight, especially as I've also played 90 minutes.

"I think I played well but I have to take it step by step. Today was a good day and now we look to the next game."

Aqua had a great performance because the team play attacking football..it suits him well and playing with only one defensive midfielder is what we should do until the rest of the season. I'm happy with todays performance and really happy for Aqua...

I thought he was excellent tonight as well Igor, still not tackling but with Gerrard and Masch alongside him, maybe he won't need to?

he must play more and just have mascherano as our destroyer in midfield

I thought Aquilani was excellent last night, and his performance raised many questions. The first amongst them has to be of course why he hasn't played more often. We've toiled away with the trench warfare of attrition which is the Lucas/Masherano axis all season, while many (not me) have been calling for the introduction of Aquilani. At last he showed he has something (which its not unreasonable to expect given he cost 20 million quid) and the feeling has to be that perhaps he is better than Lucas after all.

The second question it raised for me was whether or not we are going to be able carry him defensively, or whether or not he can introduce some defensive quality into his game. Not defending against Portsmouth is all well and good, but a similar performance against the Mancs at the weekend would in all probability cost us any chance of getting a result. Last night he offered enough offensively to compensate, once more it will be interesting to see whether he can against better teams. We've seen him be invisible before, and now he's had a good game it'll be very interesting to see whether or not he goes missing again against good teams.

The third question it raised is whether or not people like me were talking utter sh!t when we/I described him as being an "awful" signing. Hopefully he'll prove not to be so, but if that's the case performances such as last night (and obviously appearances such as last night) need to become the norm.

Lastly, and this one made me smile a bit, I wonder how it is that it's "kneejerk" and "far too early" after three quarters of the season unfulfilled to call him poor, whereas after one good game he's son of Del Pierro  :D.

Anyway well done to the fella, hopefully much more to come.

he's an enigma wrapped up in a conundrum that one. but last night, the bits i saw, were an absolute pleasure to behold. when he has time on the ball and some space around him, which i agree won't happen so often, he plays with a style and a precision that makes him fully appear the 20 million pound player. he absolutely must start against lille to see if it wasn't just a flash in the pan.

it also helped that maxi simultaneously had his best game in a red shirt, that gerrard looked bothered, and that torres decided to ooze menace instead of disdain. IF we can get those 4 clicking like that on a regular basis though for the rest of the season i think we'll just about do ok. i don't expect the manager to give it a go though.

why do we care if aqua can defend or not?

has iniesta got a good defensive game? no

has kaka got a good defensive game? no

did paul scholes in his day have a good defensive game? no

hes an attacking midfielder

he should be played off a striker, not in centre mid

Thought he ran the game last night. It's so refreshing to see a player who wants the ball all the time. He's also incredibly two footed.

Should definitely play midweek but there isn't a hope in hells chance of him starting at Old Trafford unfortunately.

Unfortunately. We found out last season that a top class passer can run the game, and draw fouls that earn red cards to the opposition. All we have done this season is stifle creativity, give away fouls, free-kicks and corners and suffered the consequences.

So we'll go to the sheethole and play defensively, hoping to keep it tight and steal it like we did at villa. Except that tactic hasn't worked so much this season, I can only pray that Rafa has worked out it is time to "go for it" even though that was the case ages ago.

On a positive note, I think Aquilani will start on Thursday, perhaps the only change will be/should be Kuyt for Rodriguez

that's the worry. the last thing you want to do is go there and sit back as you're asking for trouble. last season we went there with a positive approach (even without alonso) and murdered them.

that side we put out last night is easily as good as anything united can put out.
