Javier Mascherano: I'd never be tempted by City's millions, says Liverpool midfielder By John Edwards

Javier Mascherano launched a scathing attack on Manchester City's attempt to buy their way to the top and insisted: 'I wouldn't want to play for them.'

The Liverpool midfielder raised the stakes even higher ahead of the crucial Eastlands showdown by pointing to the lack of history at City.
Count me out: Liverpool's Argentinian midfielder Javier Mascherano has no intention of joining compatriot Carlos Tevez at mega-bucks Manchester City

'Maybe if City got into the top four, they would build on it, like Chelsea did, but one thing is clear,' he said.

'You can buy players, but you cannot buy history. At Liverpool, that counts for a lot. We play with the history of the club.
'We don't have the money that they have, but we are proud to play for Liverpool. I don't want to play for Manchester City. Yes, they have money and they are building a good team, but I am still proud to play for Liverpool.'

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is convinced his side's mental strength will prove decisive in the battle for fourth place.

He said: 'We have experience of the demands in this situation, and that is important, because it does depend a lot on the players and if they are nervous or not.'

He seems to have got his form back and is playing well but i still would not bet on him still being with us in the summer.

Mascherano is definitely a Benitez favourite and has got back to playing near his best in recent weeks but i dont think him and Lucas should play in the same XI - it makes the side far too defensive and a little bit blunted when it comes to playmaking. I can imagine clubs sniffing around him during the summer and would not be shocked if he did finally go to Barcelona.

I think Masch is a fan favourite too. Certainly one of mine.
He shows that he cares, gives everything, tenascious in tracking down.

A real throwback. In fact, if they had used his type in the Falklands, they'd still have it  :D

A cracker of a player. A pity Lucas is sat at side of him when stevie should be there.

Has anone seen Graham Poll going on about masch having a 5 game ban? I hate Poll. That tackle from masch had no malice in it. Just a milesecnd late. Slow motion makes it look bad.

Nice of him to say that but what we really want to hear is he would never be tempted by Barca.

I hope this isn't going to be another Alonso case where he plays his heart out for the rest of the season and then leaves in the summer.

GRAHAM POLL: the official line! Javier Mascherano's tackle on Gareth Barry is worth a five-match ban

Javier Mascherano should be facing a five-match ban - and he still may be if the FA disciplinary department work in a consistent manner after his over-the-top challenge on Manchester City's Gareth Barry in the drab 0-0 draw against Liverpool at Eastlands on Sunday afternoon.

TV analysts thought that the Argentine should have been dismissed, but only as a result of a second yellow card.

In my opinion, it should have been a straight red. But for referee Peter Walton, not even a free-kick was justified, which surely means he did not see the incident. Remember that this is the same ref who two weeks ago had no hesitation in dismissing Manchester United's Nani for a two-footed lunge in the 1-1 draw at Villa Park.

Mascherano went over the top of the ball with force and into the side of Barry's leg above the ankle, and the incident is shown clearly on video evidence which the FA will have studied yesterday.

If they feel that only a yellow card should have been issued, then they can take no action, saving the Argentine a three-match ban - one for the dismissal and a further two because it would have been his third sending-off this season.

If they see the challenge as red, and the charge is proven, then Liverpool will be without their midfield enforcer for the next five domestic matches - three games plus one more for each of his two previous dismissals this season.

Not that Mascherano was alone in escaping the correct punishment this weekend; Sunderland's Lorik Cana committed probably the worst tackle when he launched himself at speed, two footed at Arsenal's Emmanuel Eboue.

Incredibly, the challenge resulted in only a yellow card from Steve Bennett. And at the DW stadium, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez had every reason to bemoan his luck after Alan Wiley allowed Tottenham's Jermain Defoe to escape without censure after his two-footed swipe at Gary Caldwell.

Defoe had clearly lost his cool and lashed out at the defender which resulted in a free-kick but nothing more.
Two years ago Sportsmail highlighted horror tackles being missed by referees who cannot rely on the FA correcting their mistakes with retrospective action.

Yes it was a bad tackle but why anyone would listen to that ex-ref is beyond me. Because it's Mascherano and he has a bit of a reputation everybody jumps on the bandwagon. Why wasn't he saying this after Pienaar's tackle on Kuyt?

The ref saw it and chose not to act on it so the FA cannot impose any retrosprective action. Had he booked him then that would have been different. If we are looking at video evidence though lets ban Pienaar for 5 games too for his tackle on Masch in the derby.

Funny Poll made no comment on Fellaini's or Pieenar's potential leg breakers in the derby match

The ref did not see it, it should have been a red, it was another dirty tackle form a dirty player. I don't like Mascha, I never have and never will but I have to admit he does a bloody good job for us.
