I guess Alonso is not the 'Only' player we missed. Glad to have Riera back, lets hope he'll stay healthy until the end of the season.

Spot on Keris.

Alonso was very good, but he spent here 3 years without challenging for a title. We challenged for a title when we had BOTH Alonso, Gerrard, Torres, Mascherano, and Riera giving balance to the wing.

Until now in the season, I've been too busy in real life and I've missed many thread's depths:

Can someone clarify me whether Riera has been left out of the team always for fitness reasons? I recall some parts of the season in which he didn't play, and I wasn't aware of injuries. I didn't understand it.

Same here Sabre but as far as I know he's been injured all this time (I think :D )
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

Yeah I think he has had a few different niggling injuries holding him back all season aswell (there might have been a form issue at the very beginning of the season but I'm not sure about that). I remember at one point he came back from an injury only to get injured in that very game (in which Benny also got injured if I remember correctly). Hopefully this time around he stays fit as we really need him in there for width, balance and goal threat.

Agreed. I've always said that for me two main reasons for last season's form were 1. the re-surgence of Alonso and 2. the balance brought about by Riera...

A fit Riera seems quite crucial for the team... if he could not stay fit Rafa might need to start looking for a replacement... david silva or joe cole would be my choices...

ALBERT Riera has revealed how determined the senior Spanish players at Anfield are to make history with Liverpool.

The winger has recently returned to the team after injury to help the club in their current run of six league games without defeat and he told LFC Weekly that he, Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina are desperate to be successful in England.

“It isn’t in the character of any of us (Torres, Reina and Riera) to turn our backs and run somewhere else when times are tough,” said Riera. “All of us would like to look back on our Liverpool career and say it was a success.

“I think exactly like them. It is clear how happy Pepe and Fernando are at the club and I have no doubt they will both be here for a very long time no matter what happens.

“They have both said to me that they want to make history with Liverpool and I share that ambition. I understand I haven’t enjoyed quite as big an impact on the club as them (Torres and Reina) so far but I intend to.

“For me, if the club offered a five, six or seven year contract right now, I’d sign it with my eyes closed. Where else is there to go? Being anywhere else would be a step down. I have everything I need in Liverpool.”

Think he's helped give us a much greater goal threat and always nice to hear that from any player let alone a lad from abroad :)

Half a cat amongst the pigeons here...

While it is true Riera offers us width and balance to the side which of course is very important for me I think he's a lethargic player and I'm not always as pleased as everyone else with his contributions during games. He has a nice touch and can whip in a decent cross but I haven't seen the 'fire in his belly' to to really fight when it matters. To often he drifts in and out of games when he should be doing his upmost to be a constant thorn in the oppositions side. If it were possible to mutate his ability with Kuyt's tenacity and work rate we'd have a b.loody good player on our hands. But as it stands, he isn't a player that stands head and shoulders above the likes of Kuyt and Lucas IMO, when his ability easily allows him to.

Agreed mate...I think he blows hot and cold and far too often makes the wrong choice of pass, or shoots when there's an army in front of him etc..

Good post. This season he seems to have started slower but seems to be coming on lately.
