His village hasn't an hospital and they have to drive to Pamplona. But you are from the place your national indentification document says, and that's Rincon de Soto. He is from there, and there he lived his childhood.

Plus, the problem is that what Erik describes as Euskal Herria, is more than the current Basque country, and even beyond. They have loosened their criteria that much, that now it's good enough that a player plays for Osasuna in order to consider him pickable. Our new talent Griezzman, is from Maçon, well north in France, yet, the neighbours find him elligible just because he plays for us.

Their youth policy is not based on good homegrown players, but about trying to monopolise the youth systems of surrounding teams (Santander, Real Sociedad, Osasuna, Alaves, Burgos). Not that they don't have  the right to do it, but at least they shouldn't boast about their youth system because actually they just buy the work of others, and more often than not, with questionable methods such as offering money to the parents of 14 year old  lads.

This behaviour is new. There were times, in the eighties and before, in which the relationship between Bilbao and the other surrounding teams was good. Their agression is something very new in their history. The rivalry 30 years ago was milder.

Where does the word "Basque Country" even come from? Not even close to Euskal Herria

Can you not be Basque via ethnicity if your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. were all Euskotarrak?

Euskal Herria means the Land of the people who talks Euskera (Basque).

Currently the basque country oficcialy have 3 provinces, but the nationalism says it's 7 provinces. The problem is Joe, that Navarra is one of them and they're not happy about the idea of joining, and other 3 provinces are part of France, and are not planning to leave France either.

The Bilbao picking method, takes theoretically these 7 provinces, but have extended it even beyond, like in cases like Llorente, and or Dani and Loren in the past, who are from La Rioja and Burgos.

It's a strange mixture of politics and football Joe. The problem is that Bilbao did a great job with their youth system in the past, and gave great players to the Spanish football. Now they don't, they buy the players, and they keep saying they're a youth system team. They're not.

It will be very difficult to find people who have a clean Basque ethnicity, too many centuries close to Spain and France not to be a good mixture.

In fact, you have people who claims not to be Spanish, and both his parents were born in Seville. Anyone can be a nationalist here.

Does Llorente speak Euskera?  If so, wouldn't that qualify him?  Maybe if I took up the language I could play for the Basque American football team :D

Llorente doesn't speak Euskera. And he's a proud Riojano.

As I say Joe, it's not necessary you learn Euskera to play for Bilbao. All you'd have to do is to play a year for Real Sociedad or Osasuna, say perhaps one of your grand grand grand fathers met a basque guy once, and presto, you could be a Bilbao player. Not a problem.

Why did Llorente play for Euskadi? Did Athletic pressure him?

As you see there are plenty of sources and theories in that wikipedia article. If you're interested in basque history, I'd suggest you seek for independent history researchers. The problem of wikipedia is that the articles are written by people who have enough interest to defend their corner, no matter the side you pick.

It's always interesting to read British especialists about Spanish History like Hugh Thomas, because in this complex stories, sometimes it's from outside when things are explained with the correct perspective.

Anyway, back to Liga.

Well I was mostly interested in the name and its origin, because I think that naming something is very powerful especially when dealing with a dominant people/culture and a dominated people/culture.  In America, we called the natives Indians for no good reason at all, didn't make any sense, all because Columbus thought he had sailed all the way around the world to India

This is euskal herria. Euskadi is only Bizkaia, Araba and Guipuzcoa.Besides the athletic philosophy says you can only play players born in Euskal Herria or raised there, can be born in Holland, but if they carry from 7 years can play well here

LFC TV will become the world's first club channel to broadcast a live competitive full international match when Fernando Torres and his Spanish teammates take on Bosnia-Hercegovina on Wednesday night.
UK viewers will be able to watch the World Cup Qualifier live on LFC TV or through Liverpoolfc.tv with an e-Season Ticket.

With Torres, Pepe Reina and Albert Riera potentially involved, this is a must-see clash for Liverpool supporters – and LFC TV is the only place Spanish fans in the UK will be able to watch the game on their television screens.

Kopites will be praying Torres comes through the fixture unscathed ahead of a crucial week in our season.

Liverpool's No.9, who has been in awesome form for the Reds this term, limped off during his country's victory over Armenia at the weekend but a scan last night revealed no muscle damage.

Spain are one of only two continental teams with a 100 per cent qualifying record.

The European champions have been in scintillating form, scoring 23 goals and conceding just three in their nine games to date.

Their place in South Africa next summer is already secure - but the likes of Reina and Riera will be going all-out to impress boss Vicente Del Bosque as he looks to finalise his World Cup squad.

Though Spain have a number of injuries ahead of the Group 5 encounter, stars such as Xabi Alonso, David Silva and Andres Iniesta are all set to line up.

The game kicks off at 7pm, so make sure you're tuned into LFC TV or the official website from 6.45pm.

LFC TV was previously only available as part of the Setanta Sports Pack but this season the club have made the channel available for free on Sky Channel 434 and as part of the XL Package Virgin Media channel 544.

If you haven't seen LFC TV before, this is your chance to watch the first channel dedicated entirely to England's most successful football club for free.

The spanish squad visited the spanish soldiers in Sarajevo, but it seems that the uniform rules have been loosened between the soldiers. I don't know if that's a Spanish soldier or an english one, but defo a red!
