just got around to watching Valencia in the Europa league from last week against genoa, Banega looked GREAT. Like a mascherano who could dribble out of trouble and spot a killer pass, which is how he played at Boca.

Hi, I haven't ever heard about your team, I think that there used to be a team called "El Bilbao", and they won titles, but ages ago.

What's the name of your team again?

yes, the last year we arrived to the king´s cup final. And the people of spain were hallucinating of our fans.

we do not like to call us El bilbao, we like to call us El athletic.

We have 24 years without winning a title...but this year we´re going to win the Uefa Europa League :laugh:

I though the official name was "Athletic Club" I think that because the Bilbao club uses the English spelling, it causes people to constantly misspell Atlético Madrid as Athletico Madrid.

one thing that I try and do is always pronounce pronouns as best I can to the way that the native people would pronounce them, I don't really understand why the world works any differently. Seems very strange for everyone to have their own name for what they call somebody else. We should all be like Côte d'Ivoire, imo. Of course this gets problematic when you come into the word "the" and whether that should count or not, also what do you do when your native country is English and then people from Spain use an English word for a Spanish pronoun, and pronounce it as a Spanish word?!?!?! I don't know if I should say Athletic or Ath le teek, club or cloob

on the same point. I don't know why I always see the spanish translate the Copa del Rey into King's Cup when talking to English speakers. I usually don't see it translated over here in America

when fellow English speakers talk to each other. You don't normally see Ballon d'Or translated, or at least I don't. I am sure lots of countries with Kings have King's Cups, but (as far as I know) there is only one Copa del Rey

We call ourselves athletic because the club was founded by Englishmen. Changing the name would be upset in a way the identity of the club. Also we like.

In Bilbao they rewrite the history if they have to. If you look at the Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao badges, they have a lot similarities, this is because Atletico de Madrid copied the name, the shirt colour, and almost the badge of Bilbao when it was founded. And back then it was Atletico.

The removal of "Bilbao" in the name is not casual. They used to be a youth based team and they were a good youth based football team. At some point they stopped doing a decent job and started signing players of the neighbouring teams, not only basque, but also from La Rioja and France (Llorente, Lizarazu). For a youth based team, it's difficult to find players of their province in their starting eleven. Most of them are from the area of influence of Osasuna, or Real Sociedad.

Also of course, Atletico sounds too Spanish so that's why at some point they became Athletic, and that's why they don't like to be called "El Bilbao" whatsoever. Actually it's an easy way to wind up them!, but the funny thing is that people in Spain has said "El Bilbao" to refer to them coloquially for ages, and not as an insult, just they way you use "Pool" instead of Liverpool. But they decided to insist in their name and they don't like it when you simply don't say "El Athletic".

About your point of translation, I don't know, when you talk in English, you talk in English, and perhaps we think that if we say "Copa del Rey" you won't get what we mean.

When it comes to football, in Spain we have kept many english names, "Corner", "Penalty", are not spanish yet they're the official names. Even Off Side was used by old people, then it transformed to "OFFA", and then to "orsai". But in the eighties "Fuera de juego" started to be used. I don't think there are rules about that. Despite the name being english it's spelled like in Spanish, and you should say "korrrnerrr"

Well I would say that they have a legit reason for choosing the English word as their name, I don't really have an issue with that. What I find strange is Spanishization of the word. Using "El" and (assuming with confidence) pronouncing it not like the English word is spoken in English.

For an example in California there is a city called La Jolla. Mostly rich white people IIRC, but they insist on saying it La Hoya. Which is at least a fair attempt at the general rule of Spanish pronunciation, but then there are places like San Francisco, which without even thinking about it are pronounced as if George Washington had founded the town.

The atletico was founded by some students who were studying bilbao to madrid aviation, and they could not see the athletic, created a football club
