But didn't we try and sign Upson for 17 million quid, meaning that our fourth choice centre back would probably be Agger who cost 5 million quid a few years back*![]()
* I hesitate to quote a value for one of our players, as I know the current trend is to dispute such things. "If you take into account the Euro's rate against the pound at the time, consider that they owed us money for whatsisname and take that off what we owed them, before adding in the add ons and taking off the add ins that we didn't have to pay as he was on a loyalty bonus, that means that he actually cost us (insert a value here which is normally about 65% of what the accepted given price is in the media).
Such calcualtions mean that Johnson only cost us 6 million, Aquilani only cost us 5 million because we only have to pay the rest later on, and we only lost 1 million on Keane after buying him for 20 and selling him for 12.
Anyway I always find such calculations confusing, but as I say I was under the impression we paid around 5 million for Agger, but the reality is they probably paid us 3 million to take him of their hands when all things are considered.
Suffice to say though whichever way you look at it, had we signed Upson we would have been left with a fairly pricey fourth choice.
