Fair enough, he hasn't set the world alight but he's hardly been a disaster. He's made a few costly mistakes but so have Mascherano, Benayoun, Aurelio and those are just the first that come to mind.

If you look at stats on sites like the Guardian chalkboards it's surprising to see how much he does for the team. his pass completion rate is comparable to Alonso and Masch.

I think if he was allowed to be more attacking than Xabi is then he'd actually be a decent player for us. (I'm not saying replace Xabi with him before anyone starts!) When we first bought him he had the reputation of a box-to-box midfielder a la Gerrard. That's not the role he's played for us though.

A nice piece of business would be getting Ashley Young and ditching Ryan Babel. Young's already showing the sort of quality that Benitez expected of Babel..but Babel will never be good enough. Offer Aston Villa 15mil plus RB and that would do nicely.

Lucas was clearly the worst player last season... stats? Stats don't tell what you're really seeing... he was like a passenger... his passes were safe passes that did nothing...

Really?

Stats you may need to read

In case you can't be bothered reading them, Lucas had 3 assists last season. Alonso only had 5 so Lucas is hardly :censored:, especially as he had less playing time.

This is like the Kuyt thing all over again. Unless Lucas clears off the line, runs the entire length of the pitch then scores an overhead kick into the top corner he's automatically :censored:.

Stats may not tell everything you see but perhaps you should take a closer look at both stats and what he does on the pitch so you don't talk complete rubbish. By all means be constructively critical of him but dismissing everything good he's done just because you don't like him is a bit sad really.

Bammo, I suggested in another thread that Scott Parkers arrival could pave the way for letting Lucas out on loan with another premiership club, one of recently promoted ones where he'd get 30 starts this season. Then we could really see him settle in and find a rhythm, alllowing us to see the real Lucas Leiva?

Any thoughts - would you rather see him here with us as a bit part player again next season? A loan could be very beneficial for all involved?

Whether Alonso stays or goes I expect Lucas will play a much more prominent role this season. I really think this could be his breakthrough season....... either that or he fails miserably and is quickly moved on!

Lucas cost us alot of games last season due to mistakes and not being effective against lower sides in the league, How anyone can still defend him being good enough for the club is beyond me.
Stats prove nothing he plays more square balls then bloody David Batty for christ sake.

As for Ashley Young he would be a great signing ... A REAL winger which we have lacked for years that can create good crosses. £30m price tag is a joke though, I wouldn't pay over £20m at a Push £18m+ Babel.

I am not sure how you can say Lucas cost us a lot of games last season ? As far as I am aware we have never lost a league game in which Lucas has started. (I may be wrong)

IMO Lucas plays much better with Masch than with Alonso, and that could be one of the reasons he was a little less successful last season, as Alonso had a great season and obviously played in most games.

Lucas was arguably m.o.m against Newcastle (paired with Masch) and again had a very good game against the mancs (paired with Masch)

Admittedly Lucas did cost us some points against Wigan but I think its a little early to be writing him off just yet.

He really needs to stop giving away silly fouls and start being a little more positive in his play though.

Masch cost us points against arsenal, Benayoun cost us points against Everton. It happens to almost every player.

Lucas needs to play a decent number of games next season. if that's not with us and we get decent cover then I'd let him go on loan to a Premiership club. I can't see Rafa doing that though as he only loans out players he doesn't really rate.

I thought he improved quite alot compared to the previous season. AND he wasnt the best but definitely not shiit at all. Had some bad games but some very good. Lucas is only 22 and should improve even more. I noticed he put on some muscle, that should help
