Heinze was not the player he use to be when rafa tried to sign him, but still the red nose was doing everything in his power to stop the transfer. It's not about the value the player or not...it's just the never to Liverpool.

As for Tevez, it's not about the fee also. The red nose old fart style in signing players he wanted....do it quickly before anybody else does. He waited and waited with 30 mil for Berbatov, he was persistent on manucho (like other club want to sign that c.rappy player). but he did nothing for Tevez? at least a plan? why in the 11th hour ?

This is different to Heinze, the only way fergie can control who he signs for unless is taking first option to sign him first. I think there is also the fans element, fergie could be directly held accountable for selling Heinze to Liverpool whereas he can blame other factors such as the owners not coughing up with Tevez.

He'd be mad not to sign Tevez, he's an important player to them and if they don't then they'll have a hole to fill. Either way they face coughing up £20m+, he's not 26 yet and I'd be unwilling to unsettle a successful side unless it was something to do with age, form or the player being unsettled. The likeliest is the latter and that is mostly down to the mancs dithering over his signing since the start of the season

Well it looks like Babel is staying so I doubt we would even try for Tevez now.

probabaly just babels agent securing Ryan's full fee/compensation by reminding us that any move will be against his clients wishes

I wouldn't link the two players' movements that way, Babel to me is at best a useful sub while Tevez would be (for me) a good LWF who could also play as a strike partnership if we play two up front, or cover for Torres if/when he gets injured. Keane came and Babel stayed, I see no reason why the Tevez deal should hinge on his departure.

If we need to sell in order to buy Tevez then there's still options to sell Dossena, Itandje, Voronin, Degen, Plessis and any other players who played little or no part, of fell down the pecking order, during the season. Not that there is any guarantee Babel would bring sizeable enough bids to make the difference, I suspect it could fall into the Cisse situation of use or loan out until someone makes some kind of offer.

I think they are linked in the way that we need money and Babel can be sold.

Anyway I still think this Tevez thing is BS but they just said on 5live that he was not on the team bus that left last night.

That assumes that the sale of Babel would make much difference, how much do you think we'd get? £3m? £5m? £7m? £9m? The latter two values might make a difference, but of the names I've seen people on here say we should sell, I doubt most of them would fetch more than £5m.

Manchester City and Liverpool meet valuation for Tevez

Manchester City and Liverpool are among five leading clubs who have agreed to pay the £25 million needed to sign Carlos Tévez this summer amid growing uncertainty over the Argentina striker’s future at Manchester United, The Times has learnt.

Another English club and two foreign clubs, one of which is understood to be Real Madrid, have also offered to match the fee that Kia Joorabchian, who fronts the companies that own Tévez’s economic rights, is demanding for the player, but that United have so far balked at paying.

Tévez’s two-year “lease” deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of next month, but while David Gill, the United chief executive, appeared to hint this week that they would finally meet the “fixed fee” agreed with Joorabchian when the striker moved to Manchester in August 2007, the forward seems to have decided that he has played his last game for the club.

Although United supporters would be horrified by the thought of Tévez moving to Liverpool or City, the player is open to the idea. Tévez’s pride has been hurt in recent weeks by United’s refusal to confirm that they will keep him at the price stipulated, with the player making what could be considered a number of farewell gestures to United’s fans.

Despite United’s attempts to drive down the price, having already paid £10 million to loan the player for two years, Joorabchian is refusing to lower the £25 million price originally agreed with the club, knowing that there are other clubs willing to pay it. Either way, Tévez’s future with United is expected to be resolved in days.

The prospect of Tévez joining Liverpool would be particularly galling for United supporters. Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, wants to sign a forward who will not only give his team an added goal threat, but also the energy to complement Fernando Torres and believes that Tévez fits the bill, a coup that Javier Mascherano, Tévez’s Argentina team-mate, is hoping will come off. “I hope we can count on him,” Mascherano said. “He would be great for us. However, it will be a tough fight because so many clubs are interested in him.”

Gill has not given up hope of United signing Tévez, although if they do agree to pay the fee, it remains to be seen how the player will react. “It is in everyone’s interests to be resolved and I think it will be pretty quickly,” Gill said.

As befitting his role as Manchester United captain in Rome, Ryan Giggs spoke yesterday on behalf of his team-mates by putting aside the disappointment of Wednesday’s defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League final and expressing a determination to make amends next season.

“It’s been a fantastic season and we’ve achieved so much,” he said. “We just fell short at the final hurdle. To win three leagues on the trot is unbelievable and we’ll be looking to make it four next year and, hopefully, three successive Champions League finals. That’s what great teams do, they bounce back. We’re a great team.”

Hypothetically if we did meet their valuation id have to assume he would choose us over Man City surley. Plus with Masch here ect...

I think Man City will offer higher wages but we are the more attractive team in terms of success. I'm guessing we'd offer about 100k P/W compared to City 150k P/W. That's a fairly sizable difference.
