Next seasons centre back partnership

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Despite his age, it still makes me laugh when fans seriously suggest that Carra shouldn't still be first choice. For me, he's still the best we've got and he'll still play more games next season than Agger or Skrtel.

For what it's worth, I don't necessarily think we need another centre back as a priority, I was just putting it out there. Promoting one of the reserves is risky as they tend to get bullied at reserve team level let alone at the level they'd be playing in the Premiership.

I'd possibly be looking to bring in an experienced loan signing for extra cover if I'm honest.

Why would we bring in Hangeland to sit on the bench, hes not better better than our 1st 3 centre backs so hes not gonna play, Wheater wont come cos he will want first team games and wud cost £7m, then someone else mentions bringing in a loan siging!!

I dont agree with any of these, the answer is youth!  4th choice centre back isnt going to play that often but yet will get a couple of games here n there, so why not use Martin Kelly and Mikel San Jose, both have been used in squads before so should be given a chance!  Manure and Arsenal use their youth when needs be, we need to start doing the same!!

To be honest, if it weren't for a few injuries that Agger had, Skrtel may have been the one questioning his long term future with the club.

We need someone who is as good in the air as Sami. Too many times this season that our CB loses header from Goal Kick or just about on all Set pieces. Don't really have a name but must be someone in the ability of Vidic (sorry but he is excellent in the air and an upgrade version of skrtel). If the price is too high, we must get a seasoned veteran that can help out on the odd games or when injuries is getting serious. Maybe someone like Kolo Toure but i doubt he would like to seat on the bench. Maybe we should look at the free transfer when have more information.

Personally I think Hangeland would be the perfect replacement for Hyypia, but as you say I can't see him coming to us because of the situation we already have with Carra, Skrtel and Agger already at the club. I think he'll probably end up at somewhere like Villa or Arsenal.

The way I see it we have three options.

1. Get an up and coming CB in, one who is willing to sit on the bench a lot for about a year or two.

2. Get an experienced player in who is able to do a job when called upon , but who knows he wont be picked week in week out.

3. Find a good CB who also can play as a fullback and who would like to move up a level, its also important that he is commanding, Hangelands problem would be that he can't play fullback.

Someone like Lescott, Yobo, Jagielka, etc..

The wild card would be to bring Riise back from Roma and send Dossena the other way.

The only reason we need a centerback is because we don't have a big imposing Center Half. You're not going to find that in youth so it would need to be an extablished player and I question how much better they will be than Agger or Skrtel anyway. Someone like Wheater is a good bet for the future but he's not ready yet.

we dont need YET ANOTHER CB whos not ready yet... already got a pair of them i think....

The way i see it, we either
-address the situation and go out and buy a top class CB who WOULD partner Carra leaving Agger and Skrtel either on the bench or one of them being sold or whatever it is...

-or we get a very cheap option or a bossman as 4th choice... someone with experience preferably...

- or we have one of the kids come in as 4th choice and try to focus on addressing other areas of our squad that need more urgent attention...

We've already wasted WAY TOO MUCH money under Benitez on average players who dont/didnt contribute much and usually end up being sold a season or 2 after they are bought... Wheater, G.Cahill, S.Taylor...etc quite simply arent good enough to be playing for Liverpool week in week out.. they probably cost 5-10 mill or so and that would be a waste of money....

Agger would be my first choice.  Seem to remember we did ok when our team was full of FOOTBALLERS.  He and Skrtel should be given a go together at some point.  However, Carra's, what, 31?  Hardly past it and , like Sami, has no real pace to lose.  He can do a job for another 2/3 years at CB or FB.

The only thing I'd say with Carra is that not all players get a positive reaction from getting rested and playing less games as they actually need all the games they can get to stay sharp. A recent example from our own backyard is Finnan. When Arbeloa was brought in and Rafa started to rest him his performances dropped remarkably.

Finnan needed games to stay match fit/sharp and for some reason I think it would be much of the same with Carragher.

I'd absolutely love Hangerland (spelling?) as a back-up/rotation for Carra. It's clear that Carra can't play every game of the season now.

well at the moment it looks as if agger and skrtel are both doubtful for the spurs game. looks like kelly may have to step up unless we bring in distin.

Agreed. But I think in some smaller games it would be good to rest Carra.

well according to physioroom.com they're due back from injury on the 16th but both will be completely devoid of any match fitness having not had a pre-season.

if only arbeloa was still here   :D
