Premier League - Murphy: Liverpool look immense
Eurosport - Fri, 03 Apr 10:38:00 2009
Fulham captain and Eurosport-Yahoo! blogger Danny Murphy is ready for a tough test when his old club Liverpool visit Craven Cottage.

It is a great time of the season, as the Premier League returns this weekend with a massive round of fixtures. As the weeks go on the games are getting ever-bigger - and it seems each week is more exciting than the last.
The game that I'm obviously looking forward to is ours against Liverpool, which will be a great one. Liverpool are, of course, trying to win the Premier League, and we are absolutely desperate to get as many points on the board as possible and finish as high up the table as we can.
We'll be going into the game with great confidence after beating Manchester United. We have a strong belief in ourselves now and are always looking above us rather than below. We have a strong record at Craven Cottage and I know Liverpool won't fancy coming down to our little ground.
It will definitely be a tough game and Liverpool won't be taking it for granted that they'll beat us. We will be going into it certain that we can cause them a few problems, just as we did with the fantastic result against Manchester United last time out.
We are aiming to continue our recent good form, playing with the same skill and unity that we have shown of late. Hopefully this game could consolidate our position in the top half of the table.
However, we know it will be an extremely difficult game. Liverpool have beaten Real Madrid twice, beaten Man Utd and completely thrashed Aston Villa; their form out on the field is truly immense. But we're looking forward to it and are determined to go out there with the confidence we have gained. The fans are excited and so the atmosphere will be great.
In my opinion getting back to the Premier League is always fun after an international break as everything's now coming to a huge climax and everybody is anxious about jostling for position, whether at the top or bottom of the table.
Hopefully it will be another positive game for us, but as I said we're up against what looks to be the current number one squad in the Premier League. All I can promise is that we will continue to play at our best, give our all and aim for a fantastic result.

I honestly reckon the Mancs are going to slip again on Sunday, Vidic out and possibly Rio. Berba and Rooney out and Tevez who won't be fully fit is their only striker. Scholes out as well.

Come on Rafa's Reds! 3 points tomorrow, top of the league by half 7!  :buttrock

An i will be dancing all over Putney at 20 to 8

The lads should need no further motivation for tomorrow.

Manchester United will still win the title but not until the final day

Patrick Barclay, Chief Football Commentator

It is time for Rafael Benítez to leave Liverpool. He has been at the club nearly five years yet disappointment recurs, the fans have lost faith in him, the office politics surrounding him resemble a battle zone and, in terms of the campaign management required to take the English title back to Anfield, the only possible verdict is that Sir Alex Ferguson runs rings round him; his rant at the Manchester United manager this season was an embarrassment.

Few reading that six weeks ago (if I had been injudicious enough to write it) would have batted an eyelid. Certainly it would have resonated with the Liverpool fans I met on the flight to Madrid for the Champions League match against Real. There was a rumour that Benítez had gone and everyone hoped it were true. Without vindictiveness - the Spaniard, it was agreed, had done well in Europe - they felt that frustration had led him to play mind games with Ferguson in which there could be only one winner.

Actually, it was less than six weeks ago: 38 days, to be precise. And, since a couple of those fans good-naturedly demanded I represent their views in print, it is a pleasure to do so. When we parted, they were fatalistically trudging the corridors of Barajas airport (in fact, Liverpool were to win at the Bernabéu that night) and today I imagine them leaping out of bed with mischief in their eyes, preparing for a trip to Fulham and a riverside pint and an early-evening turn of the screw on United.

Ferguson and Co are chasing a third consecutive title with decreasing certainty. They will have an eye both anxious and cynical on Craven Cottage, for the 2-0 defeat they suffered there a fortnight ago means that a Liverpool victory over a more relaxed Fulham team would put Benítez's side two points ahead with a superior goal difference.

Although United will have two matches in hand, one is to be played tomorrow afternoon, when the visitors to Old Trafford are Aston Villa, managed by one of Ferguson's several heirs apparent in Martin O'Neill and surely not, despite their 5-0 defeat away to Liverpool two weekends ago, in irreversible decline. So a lot may depend on events at Fulham. Ferguson, always at pains to motivate his rivals' opponents - it was the reason Kevin Keegan ranted at him all those years ago - is only too aware that the points Roy Hodgson's men took from United on the day Wayne Rooney punched a corner flag all but preserved their Barclays Premier League status. Will they take it easier this evening? Knowing Hodgson, I expect a performance. What it will bring them is another matter. After all, they played reasonably at home to United in the FA Cup and lost 4-0; few expected them to fare much better in the league match.

Despite the hazards of prediction, I still think United will be champions, but only after a race to the finish (assuming Liverpool and Chelsea keep winning). They will remain firm favourites until mid-May, when a nasty trio of fixtures straddle eight days: at home to Manchester City and away to Wigan Athletic (each managed by more of those heirs apparent, Mark Hughes and Steve Bruce respectively) and at home to Arsenal. Only if they win two will the issue be resolved before the final afternoon - and it will be difficult for a tiring squad. Do not forget that, although United and Liverpool are still in the Champions League, only Ferguson's human resources also have to cope with at least one more big occasion in the FA Cup.

So the combined challenge of City, Wigan and Arsenal is capable of reducing United's lead to exactly what it is this morning: a single point. On Sunday, May 24, they can then seize the title with victory over Hull City at the KC Stadium, which they should achieve regardless of whether Hull are safe, leaving Liverpool disconsolately to celebrate their own win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

Another of my Liverpool-fan friends has an alternative scenario: that United will lose to Hull but Robbie Keane will score an Anfield winner for Spurs. My friend truly fears this. But then 19 years is a long time. He should take consolation from how quickly things can change in football. As they did for the Benítez of 38 days ago. He now has a new contract, a new chief executive on the way, more power, the full confidence of the American owners (even if they remain a bit unsure of each other) and, after a purple patch featuring a 4-1 triumph at Old Trafford, the unstinting admiration of the fans.

Ya know what mate I said 6-0 before the Villa game and I wasn't far off.  :D This time I wanted to say 4-0 but will tone it down from the start so I should have the score bang on.
