For me, you dont just earn you're respect as a player, you earn it as a person also. I dont like Mercinaries in the game today, and I've heard plenty of opinions from M.Owen fans who also dislike the Mercinary side of players ala A.Cole, L.Neill, Ballack etc etc , well Owen certainly falls into that catergoray. Just because he played for us and was an excellent player doesnt take away the fact he's a greedy little Mr England Mercinary.

He can do what he likes a contract is a contract he don't have to sign he don't have to do sh.it he is a human and has the right to go where ever he likes when his contrat is up.

Liverpool didn't owe him any thing and Owen didn't owe liverpool any thing end off day.

So what is problem remember behind football is buisness and they 2 rarely mix well but people do what is best for them or they are just mugs at end of day.

Remeber in this life you don't just make money for your self you make it for your kids and there kids and theres.

What is wrong with trying to do the best for your self int his world hats off to owen he ain't no mug thats for sure.

Don't get me wrong when he left i was a bit mad but then i sat down thought about it from his eyes and not just from club side and i thought you know what who has right to tell him what to do its his life.

He is one that has to live with that choice , I think he has paid for it remeber he left and missed out on CL medal.

Owen went to R.Madrid on LESS MONEY than he was offered by Liverpool. Liverpool had just sold his mates Heskey and Murphy neither of whom wanted to go. We had no money, a strike partner brought in (Cisse) who Owen must have realised (everyone else did!) that he could never form a partnership with. Gerrard had been seduced by Chelsea, and although he had finally been persuaded to stay, still looked likely to be going given half a chance in the near future.

As Carra said in his book, Rafa hardly endeared himself to them when they first met, or again after Owen's first game under him on the U.S.A. tour.

The whole club was in a state of turmoil and change, new manager, new ideas, new players. You can hardly blame him for thinking it might be easier to leave and he would take a chance on Madrid.

I was sad to see him leave, even sadder when we couldn't re-sign him, not because of his personality, but because he was a good footballer and scored goals. For the same reasons I would be delighted if he came back, not because I think the sun shines out of his a$$, but because I think he would make a contribution towards out title challenge, and improve our squad and team.

I think that this is a complete no brainer.

My opinion about signings is that they are only necessary when they improve on what we have. Micaheal Owen is better than ANY striker we have at the club except Fernando.

He is one of the very best finishers, he is a big game player and he loves the club.

And those who moan that he never came back to us from Madrid are in cuckoo land.. It was a poor piece of business when he was sold - there should clearly have been a buy back clause with a fee arranged. He wanted to come home but we could not afford him... not his fault.

He has been injury prone but always said the Liverpool Staff know his body and how to keep him injury clear.. I dont think the fee will be very high ether. It seems very likely he is stalling on a new contract to keep his value down for us to come in for him.

Michael has personal reasons for returning also. He feels that he never really earned the adoration that other legends did, such as Robbie even though in performance terms he was their equal. I dont quite understand why this is. But the lad has a point to prove.

The conditions are perfect for him to return. It should be allowed to happen.

I'd have him back, providing he takes a pay cut. A fit Michael Owen will always score goals, scoring goals wins games, winning games wins League titles. Why wouldn't we want that?

Personally I'd begrudge him a league title medal or a CL medal under Liverpool.

I know, because that is what Owen said at the time and it has never been denied by Liverpool or Rafa.

Owen went first to Liverpool, BEFORE travelling to Newcastle, where he met with Rafa and had a long talk during which Rafa said that Liverpool could not match the offer made by Newcastle. (He didn't say WHY. Supposedly Owen then broke down crying, but he didn't say that at the time..... so that bit is perhaps speculation?)

He then travelled up to Newcastle where they "made him an offer he couldn't refuse".

Real Madrid forward Michael Owen will be unveiled as a Newcastle player at 1200 BST on Wednesday.
The England striker, who passed his medical on Tuesday, has agreed a four-year deal and is believed to have cost the Magpies a club record £17m.

Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd said: "Bringing Michael here will rank alongside the signing of Alan Shearer as my proudest moment at Newcastle."

Liverpool had wanted to re-sign Owen but baulked at Real's asking price.

Owen revealed Everton boss David Moyes rang him on Monday evening to ask if he would consider a move to Goodison Park.

He told The Times: "Just before I arrived home, David Moyes rang to see if there was a chance of getting me to Goodison Park and to wish me luck if not.

"I think he must have known that my Dad was briefly an Everton player and I used to follow them as a boy."

Once Owen completes his move to Newcastle, his arrival at St James' Park will eclipse the money the club spent in signing Alan Shearer for £15m from Blackburn in July 1996.

The details of his contract with the Magpies are not known but reports suggest there may be various get-out clauses depending on the team's performance.

"It will be a great achievement if we sign Michael," Newcastle manager Graeme Souness told the club's official website.

"In football, the hardest thing to get is someone who puts the ball in the back of the net and Michael is the best at doing that for England.

"I'd say it's the biggest transfer I've been involved in as a manager of any football club."

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson believes it is a major boost knowing Owen will play regular football before next year's World Cup.

"It is a great club. He will play regular football, much more than last season. I suppose he is very happy," said the Swede.

"He will score goals for them and it is great to play with Alan Shearer. He is a good targetman and will give Michael Owen many chances, I am sure of that."

Owen was left out of Madrid's squad for the first game of their season after falling behind Ronaldo, Raul, Julio Baptista and Robinho in the pecking order at the Bernabeu.

"The transfer is official," said Real Madrid director of football Arrigo Sacchi.

"He is already a player for the English club. Real Madrid have been happy with him and we thank him for all that he has done here. We wish the best for the future.

"He asked to leave because we are in World Cup year and here he was not going to play regularly. We didn't want to let him go and only when a decent offer arrived did we consider selling. We wish him luck and hope all goes well.

"It's clear we have lost something but you can't keep a player when he wants to go. He is one of the best strikers in the world but here we have Robinho, Guti, Raul, Ronaldo and he wasn't going to play much."

I always had my doubts about Michael going back to Liverpool because manager Rafael Benitez wants to play in a certain way

More reaction to Owen's move

Owen travelled to England and met Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez for two-and-a-half hours on Monday before going to Northumberland.

There he met Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd and his son, manager Graeme Souness, captain Alan Shearer and coach Dean Saunders.

Owen had said he would only play for the Magpies on a one-year loan deal but he has been convinced to sign permanently in a coup for the club.

The player is England's fourth all-time highest goalscorer with 32 goals and, even though he is suspended for the World Cup qualifier against Wales on Saturday, he should return to play Northern Ireland on 7 September.

Owen will bring a proven goalscoring pedigree to a team who have yet to score a Premiership goal so far this season.

He was named European Footballer of the Year in December 2001 and, after 158 goals in 297 games for Liverpool, left for Real Madrid where he scored 16 goals as a bit part player.

so your suggesting Owen felt we had no money and yet still ran his contract down

sounds about right. Regarding Cisse, well didnt Houllier buy him? not Rafa

why is Cisse suddenly a rafa favourite
