How do you know this ?

as well as what saint posted, i remember reading at the time, so i searched an all..

site - not the best source, but does use direct quote from the horses (Michael's) mouth:

"I said that my ideal situation was to start the season in the Real Madrid team and if not I would prefer to return to Liverpool," Owen said.

"If the transfer cannot be finalised in time I have agreed to go to Newcastle."

Cant beleive he actually said that.

Also - if he REALLY wanted to go to Liverpool, he could have refused to sign for NEwcastle and forced MAdrid to take the lower Liverpool offer.

He didnt.

Or they may have forced him to stay and rot instead of accepting our MUCH lower offer

They might have, but read the report - apparently they where hepling him leave.

I firmly beleive had he demanded the move back to Liverpool, he would have got it.

Ok we all know that he never had the same support that other players have had but he is a goalscorer and he did serve Liverpool well while he was here.  I agree with your sentiment Leon but forgiveness is easier if you need goals to win the league

He said similar things to that, and others, if it's relevant, I'll try to find it.

As I have said, heart says no, head says yes.

No room for sentiment in football.

Because Madrid would then sell him for £5,000,000 less when they've had an offer of £17,000,000...

Yeah alright!

If they accept the higher offer, but Owen refuses to go then the higher offer becomes irrelevant since the only club offering it is then out of the picture. They could hold on for another club to offer the same higher offer, otherwise the next highest offer becomes the best offer. You can't force a player to sign for another club or Pennant would be an ex-red

Let's say

Man Utd offer £80m for Gerrard
Real Madrid offer £64m for Gerrard

Gerrard turns down Man Utd or Liverpool don't want to sell to Man Utd, either way the Man Utd offer is not accepted by club or player so the next best offer that could become a transfer is £64m

He would certainly gobble up and bury all them chances we create thats for sure, but would he be on the pitch at the time or on the bench?
Thats another question.......................
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

I'm sorry but I don't see how a player can "force" a club into selling him for £5,000,000 less than an agreed deal with another club. Not buying that for a second.

The point is if Owen doesn't accept the club making the £17m transfer then that offer doesn't exist as an option. They may choose to wait for a bigger offer than £12m, but that doesn't mean they won't accept a lower bid. My point was made because you laughed at suggestion they would take the lower offer, they can have no option other than to take £12m or not sell

So while you might be right that they wouldn't necessarily accept the lower bid, it doesn't mean that they won't just because it is lower than £17m. They may not get a better bid than £12m ever again, you can only take any bids on the table which, if Owen scuppers the £17m bid, would be £12m

The figures that you and everyone else quote are pure fiction, but the case in pinot would be Owens initial move to MAdrid.

Do you remember Baros going to Aston Villa? Lyon (I think) had offered around £2,000,000 more but Baros didn't want to go. We had to settle for Villa's lower offer.

He annoyed me when he left and I do think he puts England before club and he could have been more positive in coming back when he had the chance BUT  I dont think he is in a position to demand huge wages and he would be cheap in January and he is the type of player who will score goals as has been proven at every level he has played at.  All other debates about Owen just dont really interest me as Leon said there is no room for sentimentality.  What does interest me is would he score goals in our set up today and contribute to the team.

SG and Carra would be happy and I assume the squad would be happy with his return so no problems there.  I would be happy if he scores but the debate should be how will he fit in and score not about how he left, should have come back etc.  History will show him for what he was and he will join Keegan in the regards of LFC fans but at this moment in time with a great chance of the league will he score the goals that turn draws into wins and losses into draws
