Lucas had a chance to stand out in the ieam we put out against Spurs and unfortunately he did for the wrong reasons. Somebody said he's not good and he's not bad - that makes him bad at the level Liverpool are trying to aspire to. Chelsea, United and Arsenal wouldn't give him bench room. As for Plessis, Babel and Dossena they are no better which gives us a serious strength in depth problem.

If you ever wondered what the difference was in the class players we have and these average players (some of which arn't even that) you only had to look at this game,Benetez was thinking we was another Arsenal with our super kids but was sorely embarrassed and left with egg on his face and i know it was only a lesser cup but i really think Benitez mind would of been made up about certain players after this game.
When Alonso come on it was like a ray of sunshine and his quality shun instantly, how we could of been without him if juventus would of increased there bid is mind blowing he has been our best player this season and i have seen reports this morning saying Aston Villa are fighting to keep Barry in January and all i can say is i hope it's not from us cos we deffo don't need him and he would be a total waste of money considering how weak we are in other areas.
Looking to that window if we could get Stephen Warnock back on the cheap we should try to do it.I have never minded the influx of foreigners in our side and as long as they are good enough it doesn't matter what nationality they are but their comes a time and place when you need a bit of passion and honesty in the team and that's why i think we need a few more British players back in the squad.

I'm mot going to say who we need to get rid of cos that's plainly obvious between everyone on this site hopefully from this game Benitez has learned a lot because we all have.

Didi wasn't unnoticed by me, he was an excellent DM player, how dare you trying to compare Lucas to him!  :no

who is comparing him ? and did and many others like gilberto , makalele - plenty of others do simple un noticed work and doesnt mean they are garbage just cause you dont notice them . if you noticed everything you must have multi view on your sky .

Sorry last comment came across a bit strong but yes I do actually notice all good play on a football pitch be it defensive or attacking and against Spurs there were far too many invisible players, including Lucas. He has never ever got me to take notice of him. Even Kuyt, who as you all know I don't rate too highly, does that occasionally and I certainly have always appreciated his tremendous workrate.

GYBS I disagree, Hamann was a top top player, I don't think many would disagree that he wasn't a top player. In fact, well I'm going to put my neck on the line and say that I would put him in the same class as Mascherano and Alonso. His second half performance against AC Milan back in May 25 2005 proves it.

comparing him to Lucas is just daft

How the hell has this discussion managed to put the name Hamann and Lucas in the same sentence. Hamann was fantastic and one of the best defensive midfielders to play for Liverpool. Lucas quite simply isn't and never will be.

Hamann at his best is better than Mascherano imo... In terms of keeping possession and picking the right pass ... covering the back 4 and complementing his central midfield partner... Haman was world class, at his best....Mascherano has alott of energy and is the better tackler of the two ... He gets the fans going withh his tackles and closing down but other than that he isnt that good a player... he's world class in what he does but i'd certainly take a Hamann (at his best) over Mascherano every day of the week FOR A BETTER SIDE .

Lucas at his best can be compared to the likes of Sidwell and Fletcher.. he can popup with the odd moment of quality every now and then and seems to have potential but still nowhere near good enough to start for us... Funny he's been doin a whole lot better for Brazil... saw him in their last game and he had a decent game .. was spraying passes all around the pitch and was even winning back balls and starting attacks.... funny one for me but for now i wouldnt want him starting anytime soon with the players we have...

Mascha is quicker than Hamann, though I agree with your post, still think that Mascha has a few better abilities than Hamann and Vice versa.

Hamann tactically better than mascherano, definetly. better in the air and keeps possesion better, true.

Lucas showed some glimpses of intelligence last season, I've been discussing this with Bigmick ''dish and dashes'' of quality. Maybe its because he doesn't have the belief to succeed in top level football. I would say he would be a decent backup that would do the job he is asked for (if his confidence and attitude improves) but I don't think he will be every compared with the likes of Gerrard or Mascha or Alonso, etc...

Im sorry but who is comparing him to lucas ? im not at all . and i certainly havent said he wasnt a top player . Read what my post says - ie hamman was a player where a lot of his work goes unnoticed , but that doesnt mean he is garbage as someone has stated if he doesnt notice the player they are garbage.

he made a promising start for us,however for what ever reason has fallen short of the required standard to be considered for a first team place recently, is it the pressure,or lack of confidence? i"m not sure but imho
he doesn"t inspire me what so ever, & have to agree with shakey that i to dread it when he comes on at any stage of a game.

the topic started with why lucas?  well if he continues to put in performances like he did the other night my only answer will be goodbye lucas!!

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard flattens Lucas Leiva during Melwood training session

Steven Gerrard’s commitment to the Liverpool cause has never been in doubt, but he nearly added to the club’s injury list with a clattering tackle on Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva.

By Charles Carrick
Last Updated: 7:21AM GMT 04 Dec 2008

Just 24 hours after telling Telegraph Sport of his desperation to lift the Premier League trophy , the Liverpool captain certainly showed his team-mates how much he meant what he had said.

"I know I have had a decent career, and done well so far, but I still have so many ambitions. When I see Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and John Terry lifting the Premier League trophy over their head, and I haven't got it, I want it bad.

“And when I get the title, I know what my reaction will be. Simple. I will want another title.''

The two players challenged for a 50-50 ball on a frost-covered pitch at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground, but Lucas fell heavily and clutched his shoulder in agony as manager Rafael Benitez and his medical team ran over to assist him.

Play was briefly halted as the Spanish manager helped Lucas walk to the treatment room.

The Premier league leaders can ill afford any more injuries. Striker Fernando Torres is sidelined for a fortnight with a hamstring strain and defender Martin Skrtel is working towards a return to fitness following the knee injury he suffered against Manchester City in early October.

Fabio Aurelio is also sidelined after picking up a calf muscle strain during his side’s Champions League 1-0 defeat of Marseille at Anfield last week.
