Benitez: 'The Monkey On Robbie's Back Has Gone, Whatever That Means.'

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has said that he always had faith in Robbie Keane, after the Republic of Irish international bagged a brace against the Baggies.

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Robbie Keane is finally off the mark in the Premier League for new club Liverpool as he scored twice against West Bromwich Albion in the early evening kick-off at Anfield.

Alvaro Arbeloa added a third moments before the final whistle, and the resultant three points saw the Reds return to the top of the table.

Manager Rafa Benitez maintained his belief that Keane would always become a regular scorer for the title hopefuls, telling Sky Sports in his post-match interview:

"I have always wanted to support Robbie, he has been playing and contributing to our victories.

"I have had no doubts that he would start to score regularly for us. Robbie has told me he has got a monkey off his back, not an expression I had heard before.

"Robbie has game intelligence and he is always a threat to defenders. It was only a matter of time before he scored in the league," Rafa said.

"He is quick and can punish any mistakes that defenders make, and that is what he did."

He played great, but is Rafa gonna take him off at the 70th minute mark in every game? I wish he could stay for the entire 90 mins.

Just for the record, his record is still the same as that of Bellamy after 19 games and spookily so - both scored 2 in 18 then both scored a brace in their 19th game. It's unlikely we will sell Keane in the summer as he cost too much to do that, but his record is still the same as that of a player who was...............

Well done on the two goals, but like was so often the case with Crouch, the opposition defence gifted you plenty of space to score. Let's see a few more this coming week, in cup and league. Even a record of say 7 or 8 in 21 games is still not great, he's got plenty to do and a brace of goals against a team we have beaten every time so far in the Premiership (without conceding!) should be applauded but not cause to get carried away. Monkey will be on his back again soon enough if he doesn't score for a few games.

One swallow doesn't make a summer, I seriously doubt two do either

Keane is more intelligent though than both Crouch and Bellamy put together. He will come good now trust me.

Why exactly do you think Keane is doing ok. 2 goals in 18 games - not creating much - running around a bit like somebody who is trying to hard. he has created a fair share of chances, and has assisted in a few goals...perhaps someone can look up the stats?

his play is also intelligent, he always wants the ball and he creates space. yeah. ok he cocked up a chance against Atletico but he also scored a fine goal.

I'm content with his form and believe he's one of the reasons we're joint top. He's also proven quality at Premiership level and he will come good.

He had a great game and scored two very good goals especially the first.
West Brom considering they had more of the ball than Liverpool in the first half they never had a shot on target for the entire match which sums them up as a team. Just hope as I have been eluding to that this isn't the level where Robbie excels. Delighted with his performance though - he looked very sharp and extremely determined.

Two very good finishes, from two very fine passes. Was disappointed to see him taken off. Thought Rafa might have taken off Benayoun moved Kuyt to his accustomed (:D ) wide right berth and left Kean and Torres up front, give Kean the chance to grab his hat trick.

Wtf is wrong with you , stats don't tell you the whole picture . What has berbatov done more than keane and he , berbatov cost more , are the manc fans complaining? They're below us as well and we;re top with keane in the side , he's one of the reason why we're up there , sets up goals , helps to go back and defend and he's gotten 4 goals now along with 6 assist i think

I can't see what the problem is with Owzats post. All he is saying is that while its great that he scored two goals yesterday, he needs to continue to score regularly.

I agree as well that 2 goals against West Brom isn't quite the same as knocking a couple in against a top side, although unlike Bellamy, Keane has always got goals against good sides as well as bad ones.

What we need now is for him to go on a run of scoring in games and put any lingering doubts to bed.
