Sorry masch but if we do sign barry you might find yourself on the bench behind alonso and barry. (deservedly so)

Yeah plessis isn't a patch on the masch but at the end of the day if you put your country first when clealry the club is completely put out by doing so you have to accept dropping down the pecking order.

I can say for sure if he were a utd player he'd not have even thought of going!

yeh im sure it wouldnt of crossed his mind 4 a second if he was a manc

jesus

he could make history & u've got u knickers in a twist becoz hes missing afew games of what could end up being a 400+ games career 4 us & u know hell give u 100% in every1 he does play

grow up lad

Happy for him! And it's always good for the club that their players win this kind of awards. Nice one.

Hopefully he won't be wanting to make it a hat-trick next time, reckon there's a good chance he will.

It was a terrible game, I gave up at halftime.

A totsal of 100 Brazilians were registered for the Champions League last season - the equivilent of 9 full teams and these lads after 50 weeks in europe come back and are expected to play the beautiful game, forget it! Dunga is wasting his time trying to get them to play Brazilian football, they were playing typical european slow build up across the back style footie. Dunga has no experience of this - he had never managed before he got the Brazilian job. Maureen would be their ideal manager, knows the european game inside out and of course, speaks the local vernacular.

Sadly Brazilian football has regrettably passed the point of no return.

When Dunga got the Brazil job after they failed at the 06 World Cup there is a program on about the evolution of the Brazilian national team and it focused on how after 1970  Brazil  were failing for trying to play the beautiful game, where other nations were winning with a more physical, tactical approach. It then focused on the Brazil team that went to USA94 under Carlos Alberto that dropped all the  showpony stuff and focused on a pragmatic, grind it out style that eventually won them the world cup, but few fans. Dunga was Albertos captain and adopted his methods and tactics which Brazil turned to his methodology after their ridiculously talented team choked in Germany. His approach is criticised by many in his homeland, much as Albertos was.

Its also interesting to note that Brazils biggest rivals Argentina have went the opposite way, trying to play a fluent passing attractive style, over their more physical approach of the 60s and 70s.

maybe so... but the 94 brazil team certainly didn't lack flare... bebeto + romario = tons of fluency and flare! awesome pairing... at most that team was a perfect balance between technical ability and flare...

their partnership was good, without googling i think they got about 6 or 7 between them in that tourney, but comparing them to parings like Zico and Falcau and Pele and Garranchia is like comparing dalglish and rush to sanders and speedie

MASCH: I'LL REPAY RAFA WITH SILVERWARE
Jimmy Rice 29 August 2008

Javier Mascherano has vowed to outdo his Olympic heroics by helping Liverpool win a major honour during 2008-09.

In an exclusive interview with the club's official website ahead of his return to domestic action this weekend, the 24-year-old admitted he owed a debt of gratitude to Rafa Benitez for allowing his dream of winning a second gold medal to come true.

And despite travelling half way around the world from Beijing earlier in the week, Mascherano revealed he felt 100 per cent ready to start repaying that debt at Villa Park on Sunday.

"I am feeling really good. Obviously I still need to adapt to the training again because it's totally different to how you train with an international team," said the Argentine. "I feel ready for Aston Villa but it depends on what Rafa thinks.

"I won the gold not just for me but for all the Liverpool fans, my teammates who were here working hard, and for Rafa as well. Rafa and the club gave me the chance to win this gold medal – they could have told me I couldn't go.

"I have to say 'thank-you' to everyone here at the club and also the fans for understanding. I will now try to do my best to help bring some titles to Liverpool.

"I don't know how a Premier League or Champions League win would compare to an Olympic medal because I haven't won them, but I know the Olympics are maybe a step down from the Champions League - even though it was very important for me because of the history and for my country."

Mascherano is the first Argentinean footballer to win two Olympic gold medals – not that you'll find him bragging around Melwood.

He explained: "Some of the physios and the doctor asked me if they could see the gold medal but I don't like to do that. The Olympic Games has gone.

"But of course I am very happy. It's a great feeling for me and my country.

"It's amazing to think I am the first Argentinean to win two gold medals like this. As the years pass, I'll tell my daughter and children about it. The medals are in Liverpool but as soon as I get the chance to go back to Argentina I will take them with me."

The tournament saw Mascherano go head to head against clubmates Ryan Babel and Lucas in the quarter- and semi-finals respectively.

He added: "I could enjoy the situation for my country, but it's not easy when you beat some of your teammates who you spend the whole year with in the same city.

"Maybe Lucas and Ryan wanted to win the gold medals as well, so it's a difficult moment. Okay, I was happy to beat Brazil but Lucas was very sad, so I obviously tried to be respectful.

"But this is football. There are no hard feelings and now we'll work together to help Liverpool. We have forgotten about it."

Despite being a bona fide history-maker, there is no chance of Mascherano resting on his laurels for either club or country.

Asked if he'd like to go for a third Olympic gold when the London games come round in four years time, the midfielder replied: "It would be a great opportunity for me because I live in England. We will see but it would be fantastic to play in an Olympics in London."

Masch accepts Argentine armband

Liverpool midfielder to captain his country

Last updated: 10th November 2008

Mascherano: International honour

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has agreed to become Argentina's captain, despite initial reservations over Diego Maradona's offer.

Upon his appointment as coach of the national side, Maradona toured several European countries last week to meet several of his leading players - including the likes of Mascherano and Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez.

Argentina's form in World Cup qualifying has been patchy at best and Maradona has been quick to assess those at his disposal. One of his first decisions has been to hand Mascherano the captain's armband from current skipper Javier Zanetti.

Mascherano was slow to take up the offer after conceding he had doubts over whether he was ready for the role, but it does now look as though Maradona has proved convincing.

"I've convinced him," Maradona told Radio La Red. "I explained to him what I thought about him and told him what I thought he could give the team.

"He can transmit much of what he does in the centre of the pitch - we're not asking him to be a leader immediately."

Home comforts
In news closer to home, Mascherano has warned his team-mates that winning games at home is key to mounting a serious title bid.

Liverpool kept up a fine record at the weekend when they proved to be too good for Premier League new boys West Brom and Mascherano has urged for continued ruthlessness at Anfield.

"I think we need to win as many home games as possible to say near the top of the league," he told the club's official website.

"So it is very good to get another home victory - it always feels good when you win at home.

"It was a good performance and we are really happy."
