Ronaldo has said that he'll stay in Manchester despite he wanted to go to Real Madrid (official in "Publico newspaper"). What will do Real Madrid now with the 60M quid or so they wanted to waste? Real Madrid are compulsive spenders, they won't just sit down or make a low profile signing, IMHO they'll start shooting to everything that's shootable now. I wouldn't be surprised the rumour I heard about Alonso being part of Madrid's plan B in case Ronaldo affaire failed is true.

Seeing Alonso on a white shirt would be as painful as seeing him playing for Manchester for me, but considering Madrid are not our direct rivals in the leage, I would consider a Real Madrid-esque offer.

Real Madrid competed with Liverpool 4 years ago for Alonso and 2 years ago made an offer to Liverpool. Now Schuster is rumoured to like Alonso. Besides this old interest, Real Madrid do like to sign the best Spaniards, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Alonso as a natural target :m.

Let's see what happens. Hope Alonso stays, but the summer is so long...

De la Red, Guti, Gago, Diarra, AND Xabi Alonso?

Well if they've got £60 million to splash maybe we can get the chance to screw them the way they've screwed others.

Tell Madrid they can have Alonso for £25 million .  :D

^ Why would they waste their money when they will probably spend it on Ronaldo next yr?  He's not hanging around Old Toilet for more than a yr.

Liverpool could have raised some of the cash to finance a move for Gareth Barry with the sale of Dirk Kuyt - but the Reds scared off Hamburg with their £16m valuation of the Dutch striker. (Daily Mail)

Probably get shot down in flames for this but ...

If we are to sell Pennant AND Yossi and get say £10m for the two of them what about a wee £3m - £5m bit for Seb Larrson @ Birmingham!?!? SSN says he's having show down talks next week as his salary has been halved. I like him and think he might do a job for us. A bit of a gamble but an option IMO.

Like I said I'll prob get shot down in flames for that post!

Joe asks with some logic

De la Red, Guti, Gago, Diarra, AND Xabi Alonso?

De la Red has the doom of being part of the Madrid youth system, it has difficult to play in the first team, and I'm afraid his good season in Getafe won't be enough for that demanding club in order they give regular football. You don't only have to play good and look good, you also have to sound good to play in Madrid. :)

Guti is a different case, a totally different midfielder, creative one. Alonso would compete both with Gago, and Diarra, who hasn't convinced the Madrid crowd nor the press.

To be honest, since they had Redondo and Makelele, they've been wheeling and dealing (is this correct?) in that position without finding a definitive option for the position. Gago has quality, but I still wouldn't be surprised Real Madrid were interested on Alonso considering their philosophy, which has nothing or little to do with what the actually the team needs: they don't lack quality, they lack depth, yet they've been half the summer trying to buy a single player in a position they have well covered.

Liverpool’s Benayoun Or Chelsea’s Malouda Set For Roma Switch?

AS Roma boss Luciano Spalletti is looking at making at least two new signings before the transfer window closes, with Liverpool’s Yossi Benayoun and Chelsea’s Florent Malouda heavily linked.

While Spalletti has been quoted in the media admiring Israel international Benayoun, France winger Malouda has been constantly in transfer talk linked with the Serie A outfit.

It’s no secret that the Reds have to sell if they have to fund a move for £18m-rated Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry, but it is unlikely that manager Rafa Benitez will sell Benayoun, who only joined the Anfield side last summer from West Ham.

On the other hand, Malouda could find himself surplus to the requirement at Stamford Bridge with new boss Luiz Felipe Scolari having a formidable range of midfielders available, and the Brazilian tactician still out in transfer market to complete his reinforcements.

Malouda joined Chelsea only last summer from Lyon, but has failed to make a desirable impact in the English game.

PLEASE can WE buy Malouda !!!!  Sell Yossi and get Malouda.  He scares the hell out of me every time he´s on the ball.

Yossi Benayoun reassured over Liverpool future Aug 7 2008

by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

YOSSI BENAYOUN has been told he will not be sold - despite constant speculation linking him with a move away from Anfield.

The Israeli midfielder was again linked with a move to Roma today with the Italian club having identified him as one of their main transfer targets for this summer.

But Benayoun has been assured by Rafa Benitez he will not be sold and the player himself is not looking to leave anyway so any such move would be highly unlikely.

The 28-year-old has impressed during pre-season, scoring three goals in seven games and playing a key role in Liverpool’s unbeaten run.

Story continues

Benayoun’s ability to play in a number of positions makes him a key member of Benitez’s first team squad and the Reds boss has made it clear to him that his future lies with Liverpool.

And with Sebastian Leto having left Liverpool on a one year loan deal to Olympiakos, the Reds boss would be loathe to reduce his options on the left side still further by allowing the versatile Benayoun to depart.

Furthermore, contrary to speculation, there is no need whatsoever for Benayoun to be sold to finance the proposed signing of Gareth Barry as the funding for that possible deal is entirely separate.

What I don't undrstand are some of the valuations Rafa has put on the players.

Kuyt 16 million
Voronin 6 million

That is just utter stupidity. Who is he going to find who are willing to spend that amout on those guys??

Does he want Barry or not?
If he does then Rafa needs to start getting serious and
start being realistic.
And no, like Rafa has said he needs to sell before he can buy.
Don't believe otherwise for a second like our benevolent
owners will stump up the cash themselves.

???   We know this because; i) Ian Herbert of the Independent came out inexplicably stating in an article that Voronin could be sold for £6m, and ii) The Daily Mail - near enough only the Daily Mail (as far as I'm aware) - decided to post an article stating that Rafa had placed a £16m price tag on Kuyt.

What I really, really don't understand is the readiness with which some people are prepared to believe reports such as these, using them as a basis to criticise.

Ok, so I may have been a bit hasty accepting those numbers as facts.

But what do you suggest Rafa do?
He needs money, there is no way around it.
The only fact is that

Rafa has publicly gone out and said he needs to sell to buy many times.
The whole world knows he wants Barry. Barry costs 18 million.
Who does he sell?

And even if these are just numbers put out in the the press
I have yet to see a realistic valuation of a player in the squad.

We need to get 18 million and selling Pennant for 4-5 million is just a drop in the well.

It will take 2-3 sales at least and Rafa needs to start selling
or there won't be enough funds for Barry.

I just want to hear a realistic figure for one of ours players in the press for once.
