Disagree mate..... that's about 8 million quid. For a utility defender who's good enuff to play well, anywhere across the back four and who in all likelihood will probably be our 1st choice right back (if we don't bring anyone else) as I'm really not sold on this Degen fella yet. Seems to be a fair bargain at best.... certainly cause to think twice but not enuff for me to snap anyone's hand off.... He may not be 1st class but for that kind of money, I'd say it's better to keep him as the 1st name on the subs list at the very least.

You mates are reading the Sevilla offer from your Premiership perspective in which market is expensive. But from a Spanish perspective it's an important sum bearing in mind that Spanish clubs still haven't agreed the new tv contracts.

If this offer is true it will vouch Joe's and other's opinion about the good performance Arbeloa has done for this club, as he came for a lot less money (1,5M I think? or even less?)

It's interesting Monchi is after Arbeloa aswell. Monchi is the guy who makes signings in Sevilla and I struggle to remember when he got a signing up wrong.

The thing is, that 8M is an amount to consider when you need money, especially if you're considering to sell the likes of Alonso for 14M. I doubt Arbeloa's value will grow over 10M if the buyers are Spanish clubs.

Arbeloa is a good player. There are not many RB in Spain and he's probably wanted by many clubs. But at the same time I don't think Arbeloa is much better than Finnan, or Carraguer moved to that position. 8M is a sum to consider IMHO, IF Rafa doesn't plan to use him regularly. If he considers to use him regularly, then I'd keep him.

good shout mate , but 8 million is really a tidy profit for a player whom i think we bought for over 2 million quid? Besides if he does go , we can play carragher at right back who may not be the best going forward but defensively is deffo better than arbeloa and we have finnan for backup and also degen . Arbeloa is a good player to have around as a back up as he can play in a variety of postions that you suggested but he's still best at left back i reckon , he was cr.ap player at centre back and average at best i reckon at right back

Jul 4 2008 by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL are poised to land £3m Brazilian goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri from Palmeiras.

The Reds confirmed today they are in negotiations with the player and his club and hope to announce his signing next week.

His arrival will signal the departure of Scott Carson, back at Melwood this week after a year-long loan at Aston Villa.

Rafa Benitez is trying to juggle his financial resources as the saga over Gareth Barry’s proposed transfer shows no sign of reaching a conclusion.

The sale of Carson could generate around £10m to boost his hunt for other players, while Portsmouth are believed to be ready to table an increased offer of nearer £10m for striker Peter Crouch.

But Cavalieri looks like he could follow Philipp Degen and Andrea Dossena into Anfield even before those deals are done.

The 26-year-old is already in Europe to secure a work permit and hopes to sign once that paperwork is out of the way.

Cavalieri is currently second choice goalkeeper to Palmeiras legend Marcos, but has made more than 100 first team appearances since his debut in 2002.

Standing six feet four, he was linked with a move to Inter Milan before the Nerazzurri opted for fellow Brazilian Julio Cesar instead.

Palmeiras coach Wanderley Luxemburgo has allowed him to miss his club’s pre-season training camp in order to travel to Europe.

Fabio Aurelio became the first Brazilian to play for the Reds when he signed from Valencia two summers ago.

Meanwhile, Charles Itandje’s briefly unimpressive stay at Liverpool is set to end with a switch to Galatasaray.

Benitez has struggled to find adequate cover for first choice Pepe Reina, with Itandje, Daniele Padelli and Nikolai Mihailov all enjoying fleeting careers at Anfield – and Scott Carson proving too good to spend his time in the reserves.

can't see the point in this. why spend £3m on a backup keeper?

just sign niemi on a free. he'd be perfect backup.

exactly , one of the most consistent keepers around .

the more I think about it the more I like selling him for 8 M (hopefully 9 or 9.5  :D   )  My original thinking was that if we are going to sell, sell Finnan and or Aurelio but we probably couldn't get 8 for both of them combined right now, and its not like Arbeloa is head and shoulders above them. Maybe just a forehead  :p  Imagine if the money from Arebloa allows us to get anybody that is better than Riera, then the move works for me. But then again if I think about us going into the season with just Degen and Finnan at right back I get a little worried, but then I think if we start to look shaky we can always play Carra on the right with Skrtel and Agger in the middle

Daily Mail:

Crouch on his way as Pompey's  £10m bid wins the day and dashes Spurs' hopes

Peter Crouch finally landed his move to Portsmouth yesterday after the south coast club relented over his valuation and had a £10million bid accepted by Liverpool.

Throughout months of uncertainty over his future, the striker has insisted he would consider quitting Anfield only for Fratton Park, despite Tottenham offering £9m for him less than a fortnight ago

His wish was granted when the two clubs struck an agreement last night over a deal that will be confirmed when the Football Association offices open on Monday morning.

Crouch was in jubilant mood after learning that Portsmouth had succeeded in a pursuit that was first revealed in Sportsmail earlier this year.

He made it clear he was prepared to run down the final year of his Liverpool contract rather than be forced into joining any other club, such was his determination to link up with Harry Redknapp and boost the ranks of England players at Fratton Park.

Portsmouth already have a quartet of England squad members in David James, Jermain Defoe, Glen Johnson and David Nugent. Crouch has long felt that more frequent starts under Redknapp would reinforce his standing at international level.

Liverpool will receive £8m up front and will waste little time putting it to good use.

They are close to sorting out the fine detail of Gareth Barry's protracted move from Aston Villa and are still exploring ways of prising £20m rated striker Robbie Keane away from Tottenham.

With Juventus expected to meet the £15m price tag on Xabi Alonso, they could soon have the funds needed to launch another bid for Keane.

Yossi Benayoun has turned down the chance of a move to Ajax and told boss Rafa Benitez he wants to fight for his place at Liverpool.

Ajax chiefs were given permission to speak with Benayoun's representatives after registering their interest with Liverpool, as revealed in Sportsmail.

But despite the prospect of linking up again with one of his former coaches, Danny Blind, and interest from Tottenham and Portsmouth, the Israel midfielder has made it clear he intends staying at Anfield.

Crouch will join Pompey for £8.75m. (Daily Express)

Isn't Meira a centre back? Hardly a position which needs reinforcement, what with Skrtel, Carra, Agger, Hyypia and, I suppose, Jack Hobbs...

Yeah. He can also be a defensive midfielder.

If Crouch is gone, you guys think Rafa will bring in another forward (I know we heard about Keane but I doubt that would happen). Or will push Babbel and Kuyt to Forward. As for Voronin, he will be his usual self somewhere in the stand. It would be trouble if we only have Torres as he can't possibly play every game and perform.
