So long, liverpool wonder!

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Well I am sure that most of you already know that Michael Owen is going to Madrid, it has been announced on LFC.tv

I am not happy about it, I believed that Owen would stay with the club he's been with for so long. But it looks like there is no stopping Owen. I am disapointed because Gerrard stayed and Owen didn't follow up. Just thinking about Owen wearing the white colours makes me sick to my stomach but this was bound to happen.

I appiciate what the Liverpool wonder has done for us. After seeing him in the World Cup 98 he became my favorite player, I was more impressed by Owen then I was with Ronaldo.

He has done so much for the club, and even with bad seasons he tried to do his job by scoring 19 goals in a horrific season.

I used to be a fan of Real Madrid but I am no longer a fan of theirs, they are just too damn cocky. So long Michael, I hope that you some day return to the Reds, have a good career at Madrid.

After a month or so surfing the site I feel like I need to make my first post.

OK He's gone and he has f****d us about.

But my abiding memory of young micky is sitting in the millenium stadium watching him drag us from defeat to victory against Arsenal with two brilliant goals, to me, that was what made him the striker he was and probably still is.  Go to Real and I hope you make it.

Best time of my life saying hard luck to the Arsenal fans.

So long Micky and thankyou for the fish!!!

Dont want to sound bitter and twisted here
But while i wish him well, on other hand isnt it better for LFC if he goes to Real Madrid cant score a goal to save his life and spends him time on the bench swapping playing away stories with Becks.
If he goes over there and scores plenty for the steal that Real Robbers got him at wont that only make LFC look like even bigger pratts

Yea I don't understand why he would want to sit on the bench unless Madrid guaranteed him a place on the team.

A.B...so finally reality hits you! Owen has been great for us few seasons ago but we have seen the best of him. The circumstances surround his departure has left many fans dissapointed, and it does not reflect his claim that he has LFC in his blood. To me, he is now a mercenaries who looked after his self interest above that of the club. So long Mikey...we won't miss you but you will miss us a few months down the road. Ta...

Yes it has hit me with a shock, I am not going to blame Owen for his departure but he has been here for 13 years and him leaving was bound to happen someday but this is just bad timing for it. The LFC board and Owen are both at fault imo.

I certainly don't think so. Even Beckham and Figo are not g'teed a starting line-up. So unless Real decided to play 4 upfront, I don't think he will move above Ronaldo and Raul at this moment. He will have his work cut out trying to fend off Morientes who is in better form than Mikey of late.

The pull factor?...£££

Agree Laza - confidence and fitness and he'll be deadly again.

Here's a reminder for those who have forgotten:

Since 1998 Owen has been Liverpool's top scorer every season and hit 19 goals in an injury hit 2003/04 campaign.

The star of Liverpool's 1996 FA Youth Cup triumph, Michael has been with the club since a schoolboy and scored prolifically as he rose rapidly through the Anfield ranks.

During the summer of 1998 he achieved worldwide fame following his stunning strike in the World Cup second round clash between England against Argentina. Off the pitch he collected the PFA Young Player of the Year for season 1997-98 and in 1998 was also voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

It was in the treble season that Owen continued and enhanced his reputation in the treble season. He hit two goals against AS Roma in the UEFA Cup and followed that up with two magnificent late goals to win the FA Cup Final for Liverpool in Cardiff against Arsenal - a match which has since been called 'The Michael Owen Cup Final'. That just confirmed his standing as one of the most exciting strikers in Europe.

He followed that up by scoring a sensational hat-trick in England's 5-1 win over Germany, becoming the first England player since Sir Geoff Hurst in 1966 to score a hat-trick against Germany.

Michael was named European Footballer of the Year in December 2001 when he received the prestigious ballon D'or and scored his 100th Liverpool goal against West Ham at Upton Park on 29th December 2001.

In the 2002/03 season Owen scored 28 goals for Liverpool including his 100th in the Premiership with a hat-trick at West Bromwich Albion. Owen also scored at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff again when Liverpool beat Manchester United 2-0 to win the Worthington Cup.

He has now scored more goals for England than any other Liverpool player when he surpassed Anfield legend Roger Hunt. (LFCtv)
