Owen

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Owen certainly looked a lonely figure sitting on the bench last night. Virtually no interaction between him and the rest of the bench . Things aren't looking to good,it's almost as if the powers that be have given up trying to keep him  :(

When you get the ball, I want you to beat a couple of men and smash the ball into the net, just the same way you used to at Bury," said Shankly. Lindsay replied: "But Boss that wasn't me, it was Bobby Kerr." Shankly turned to Bob Paisley and said: "Christ Bob, we've signed the wrong player."

I don't know what to say at all.  I'll bet Benitez has replacements lined up already.  It's all too exciting though!!!

It'll be a shame if Owen does go but if a new contract cant be agreed its better that he goes now rather than a free at the end of the season.

So Owens era has come to an end. My What a shame it has happened so suddenly and what a shame we might only get 8m for him, But what's done is history and tommorrow will be the start of a new chapter in the clubs move forward. I remember great players leaving and as Carra said LFC has survived but this time may we march forward with our heads held high looking towards a new dawn. Adios monsieur Owen i am sure our paths will cross again. :;):

It has been said that Owen is the one who has been stalling to put pen to paper on his contract extension.

I think the top management of Liverpool and Benny has reached a point where they are quite fed-up having to wait on Owen and are trying to protect his immediate transfer value so that if any possible suitors come (Real and Barca), Owen will be available to play in European games.

It has also been reported that Owen's people are so eager to make the move away from Anfield.

What Benny did in the Graz game is to protect Liverpool from any dimunition in Owen's potential transfer value if he keeps stalling on the contract extension. Makes complete sense to me, if i were in Liverpool's shoes.

I hear from the papers hes going for £9mil and a choice of one of two of Madrid's second string team members.  I feel like we are being really badly ripped-off

If now we're not in finance crisis, we could have a better bargaining position in the deal. Having him stay for 10 months and to let him go under Bosman is probably still better than selling him now for such price since he is definitely capable in making a difference of where we will have finished in in Champion and EPL if he was available. We can fork out huge of cash if we make a good result in CL which can be much more than what we are getting from his selling now. However, we desperately need some cash to buy a couple of new players urgently. Sad but true.

If I remembered correctly, last time when Steve MacManaman left us under a Bosman, Houllier has said that no first team Liverpool player will be allowed to have contracts with left than 2 years left so that there will not be a repeat.

What's happened? Why was Owen's contract let be left with less than 1 year to run before Houllier left? It is hardly Benithez's fault. All he did is to decide to sell when he realised that Owen has been stalling for more than 16 or so months from the time when the contract extension talks began. I suppose Parry did try to make Owen sign but he still stalled.

What's up with Owen? Was there something wrong? It has been reported that he is an admirer of Valencia's organisation in their play and was instrumental in influencing the appointment of Benithez. When the man did arrive, he baulked at signing a contract extension. He did say that he will never leave Liverpool on a Bosman but with some 10 months or so left in his contract and having stalled at signing yet again, surely Liverpool had to do something to get something out of this situation and not let Owen leave under a Bosman.

Is Liverpool less of an English club now that Murphy has gone? Must liverpool have a core of Liverpool born players in the first team at any one time, regardless of their general quality? Does Owen feel that the local team spirit has gone with Murphy or Heskey gone that he is not willing to try and stick it with Benithez and see how things go? Or is it more of a case that Owen is frightened at the prospect that he has to rotate with the others and that he may not ba an automatic choice?

Only a few weeks ago he did say that he will sign the extension, but why still stall before Liverpool is certain to make it into the group phase of the Champions' League? If his game is only to sigh after Liverpool has made it the the CL group stage, he should have come forward and out with it instead of stalling yet again. If you were Benithez, what would you do? Risk cup tieing him by playing him in the Graz game and be at the mercy that even after Liverpool qualify for the Group stage, he'd still stall at the extension. If that happened, Real would have waited until January and get him on a Bosman.

Puzzling events that led to this outcome and only he and his people knows why they handled themselves that way.

We don't know actually and can only speculate. Whatever it is, we have been s*ckered into selling him at such a cheap price and I can't help but feel that we have been really squeezed. I still hild the view that Owen has been a fantastic player for us and I thank him for all his contributions to Liverpool and wish him all the best in the future.
