Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Hand on heart, i have to be honest. As much as mascherano really is fantastic, i don't think we can justify spending 17m on a central midfielder. If this season has shown us anything, it's that we lack quality in depth in all other areas besides central midfield (goalkeeper excluded). To buy mascha will be a luxury purchase, it will be kinda like wearing a cashmere scarf whilst wearing a pair of battered trainers (awful pun i'm sorry). I guess what i'm trying to say is,  although i really regret having to say this, is that it is irresponsible to strengthen our strongest position whilst a solid covering centre back, quality winger, and supporting striker our missing from our squad. With it becoming increasing obvious in the last few weeks that the yanks aren't gona lay out for too many more big signings, i think it's time we prioritise and get real. Masha is great, but we already have two great centre mids (gerrard, alonso) a wonderful prospect in lucas, and sissoko who could, (though it doesn't really seem likely) recapture his form of the 05/06 season. The same can't be said of any other position in the team. Lets talk about strikers for example, we have Torres, err, my point exactly

Nice point, but the fact is, mascha is a great player, and we have a more than perfect chance to get him, and we might not ever get a chance like this. Hes proven, not just in english football, but for how he plays in OUR team, he's built club relationships that makes us his first choice club, settled into his home and has won over fans. He is a world class player (not used lightly) any team in the world would take him.

Not buying him would be bloody stupid (and surely we would pay less than 17mil after all the wage bills weve spent?)

I'd rather sell Alonso than letting Mascherano go. I want them both to stay though.

I'd actually agree with both your sentences Kukilon.

Agreed...think we could sell him to barca or real madrid for 17 to 20 million pounds..

add
1)sissoko for 8 million (not sure who will pay it)
2)Carson for 10 million
3)Kuyt for 5 million

and bang.....rafa has got his 40 million to sign his 2 (20 million) players.......

WAT A MIDFIELD !! :;):

Yeah its very good but i would still like to see Torres have someone up front with him...............

Gerrard would be up there with him...

Thats the whole idea of having Mascherano & Alonso in the Def-Mid positions, with Sissoko as cover.

Imo Gerrard has to hand alot of his defensive responabilities to Maschareno. Then we can see more of a creative, attacking and Menacing Gerrard cut through teams and provide Torres with his ammo to fire.

Whether he would get the liberty from Rafa to occupy a more free role is another thing.

But the way Gerrard is playing at the moment, he'll be burnt out by 29. This is where Masherano is going to have to show his real worth. As the dog fighter in front the back 4, and give licence for Gerrard to form an immense partnership with Torres.

Sell Kuyt, Crouch and maybe 1 0r 2 more who could finance a much needed Centre back and another utility player.

Agree with you completely. Our MoM by far (though Carra did good as well).

i told you he was class....and you doubted me? ...tut tut tut.....I said it during the world cup 2006 that this fella was the best defensive midfielder in the world i was not wrong then or now...Watch how he reads the game, his tackling and tracking are sublime and the distribution is top notch. If you watch Rafa giving instructions onto the pitch it is invariably to Mascherano... mascherano is the "generalismo" on the pitch. We dont know how lucky we are to have him, truly world class, If we dont sign him (and thats why we had the Rafa versus the two idiots GG/TH standoff in the first place) it is a huge mistake. 17 million is dirt cheap for him, look at what Man utd paid for journeymen like carrick and hargreaves.....Mascherano is twice the player the two of them are put together.
he is the player of the season so far....and i include the superb torres in that estimation.

Torres 2007 wrote:Yes but you have to ask yourself, what does he actually offer???

I have heard the figure of 17m being banded about for Mascerano's permanent  residence at Anfield.

Simply not worth it. I worry about Rafa sometimes. How come he can let a player like Didi Hamann go, and excellent tackler and controller of the midfield go to City.??and then talk about paying 17m for Mascerano?
Why they F*** do you think Man City are in the Top 3 right now in the EPL?? down to one man in the midfield. Hamann!!!

total respect!

Mascerano is not a Xabi Alonso, and I dont even think he is as good as Mohammed Sissoko.

17m or let him go?

Let him so. He aint worth it.

its a no Brainer. for 17m, I want KAKA from Milan.

HAHAHAHA thats one of the worst jokes ive ever heard.
sissoko better the mash? hmmmm what games are you watchin matey?
