Rafa Benitez: I won't be selling, I will be buying

Dec 29 2007

Rafa Benitez fully expects Liverpool to be active in the transfer market when the transfer window opens early next month, he said today.

And he said he does not intend to sell any of the current squad. Peter Crouch had been linked with a move to Manchester City.

“We will try to find the right player at the right price. We have talked - there are no problems, because we do think the same way,” he said of himself and Liverpool’s owners.

“We will continue to work, like every club, to improve our squad.

“We will try to do the same; if we can find the right players at the right price maybe we can do some business.

“If we cannot, we will try to improve what we have. But I believe I can go to the board and ask if the right player comes along - and I think they would say yes.

“We are not thinking about selling any of our players, because we will need them for the rest of the season.

“We have the FA Cup, the Premier League and the Champions League. We are not thinking about letting anyone leave.”

Mean business...with no money?

I like a few of the players in that list, so I am going to believe this rumour  :D

When i heard the rumour Sabre i rang me mate up in Madrid they are the same impression as you not heard a sniff but also mentioned Athletico aswell

Now we are in dream land if this is true (although I doubt it!).

I'd take all of them apart from Quaresma who I don't rate. Too inconsistent for me.

Not that I believe this rumour at all, but why would we bring in three defenders all of the sudden ???  I only think we need one of them, seeing as for example both Heinze and Kaladze would be able to play either on the left or - if needed - in the central defence. Anyway, that's quite a ridiculous rumour all in all  :D

I'd take 30 million and Heinze for Xabi.

I wonder if Rafa would if got offered that, becasuse when talking about the Jan transfer window. He said he wont be selling, unless its a big price ... 40 million and then he'd say they'd have to seriously consider it.

But there is no way in the world he'd sell Gerrard, he's simply priceless. He's only just brought in Torres who's doing well, who else could realistically in our squad could go for that kind of money ? Alonso possibly, he aint worth 40 million but 30 and Heinze  :D

Alonso is also priceless and is as valuable to our team as Gerrard, Reina, and Torres.

Nah, we have Mascha, Gerrard, Lucas and Momo they'd be enough there in central midfield.

I wouldnt say Alonso's priceless.

Xabi alonso(on his day) is the best passer of a ball, whether it be a long ball, defence splitting or cross-field pass, xabi is the man. His Technique is awesome.

here are my views:

momo = not liverpool caliber - he cant pass the ball and has an awful first touch, his second touch is a header or a slide tackle.

lucas = not ready to rely on just yet - an awesome prospect.

gerrard = the name speaks for itself

mash = brilliant.

I think to have the option of gerrard, mash, alonso and lucas in central midfield is frightening....as the song goes, 'we have the best midfield in the world'

Who have we been linked with and is likely to come.....?

Heard again that we are still interested in Michael Owen, probably just paper talk, but it keeps coming back again and again.

satanta sports

Rumours are circulating that a soon to be fully fit (but for how long?) Michael Owen is attracting the attention of former employers Liverpool and table-topping Arsenal (Various).

Newcastle are ready to give up and cut their losses with the England international who has had more comebacks than Frank Sinatra. The fact that they are still reportedly after £10m for the 28-year-old may prove problematic. There is no doubt that Owen still has a lot to offer, but it does look increasingly likely that the former Real Madrid man may be burning out. I am huge fan, but I doubt if anyone will risk taking Owen for that kind of money. OK, on his day he could still be a 20-goal-a-season man – that's if he could be counted on to play 30 games a season, something he hasn’t managed for three years now.

West Ham are the latest side to be after Newcastle defender Steven Taylor (Newcastle Evening Chronicle). Alan Curbishey and many other managers have been monitoring the young defender's contract talks with his employers closely. So far the discussions seem to have gone nowhere and even though the Greenwich-born centre-back says he wants to stay at St James' Park, he must be flattered by the attention he is attracting from the likes of Arsenal, Man United, Liverpool and now the Hammers.

Taylor is a more than competent defender who, at  21, has already managed nearly 100 top-flight games and may be available fairly cheaply. This is one potential signing to keep an eye on in the coming weeks – I fancy he may well be leaving the north east very soon.

I was about to post much the same thing about Owen - a couple of journo mates are sniffing around it today.

There's a rumour whipping up at one of the news agencies about us going in for Santa Cruz, which I'm informed is absolute b*llocks.

Taylor looks a good player to me but it's a funny age for a centre half. A lot who look good in their early twenties don't train on, Ridgewell at Birmingham looked a good prospect at Villa but has become average, while the fella who was at Derby but is now at Middlesbrough (who's name escapes me) is in the same boat. I can't help thinking that for the same kind of money you'd have to shell out for him, there'd be players available who would be a better fit. It has to be said that given Riise's form and Aurelio's injury problems, it really is a shame that we couldn't and seemingly can't get Heinze as he would be absolutely ideal.

Now that you mention it Mick, Heinze's name keeps coming up in relation to us and transfer activity. He's mentioned in a few different newswire feeds, which could just be copycat writing, but every so often it means there's something to it.
