Because Villa would cost a fortune, I'd say approx £30m, I'm not saying he wouldn't come to Anfield given the choice but we couldn't afford him  :no

I know that the chances are very low, but why shouldn't we have the funds? Our potential chopping block his HUGE: Sissoko, Riise, Carson, possibly Crouch (which I would only be OK with if we had already brought in Villa)

I hope the owners say, we will pay to keep Mascherano, but if you want to bring in NEW players you have to sell, then identify your priorities and how much you value them we will asses the market and if you can sell enough to get within reason of your top priority we will splash a few mill extra to make it happen.

Should sound fair to both sides if you ask me, but my job and/or bank account isn't at stake  :D

We haven't got that much money, G & H are borrowing money left right and centre and with the funding for the ground I don't think we'll be splashing the cash, also remember that were gonna have to shell out £17m for Mascherano.

Villa admits interest in Premier League switch

Valencia striker David Villa, who has been linked with a transfer to Tuesday night's Champions League opponents Chelsea, says he might be interested in a move to the Premier League.

The 26-year-old forward is enduring a disappointing season with his Spanish club and cannot qualify for the knockout stages.

'Any player would be interested in coming to the Premier League,' he said.

'It is not going to make any difference to me about this match just because people on radio or TV are saying you might sign for a better club.

'We can say as much as we like about how we are going to turn things around at Valencia but where we have got to prove it is on the field with our performances.

'All we can do is put the coach's plans into action and provide our best.'

Coach Ronald Koeman is looking for his players to give the club a lift.

Koeman has enjoyed success against English teams previously, notably two seasons ago when his Benfica side ended Liverpool's hopes of retaining the Champions League with victory at Anfield.

But the Dutchman is not thinking about past glories now as his side concentrate on Chelsea.

'That's all very well and they are great memories but everything now is focused on our future,' he said.

'We have many injuries and many suspensions but I still feel we can get something out of this game and see our European journey continue in the UEFA Cup instead.'

Valencia have slipped to seventh in La Liga, are rock-bottom of the Champions League group and need a better result than Schalke against Norway's Rosenborg to earn third place and snatch a place in the UEFA Cup.

But they have been goalless in their last three games and face Barcelona next weekend.

I remember about 12 months ago that he would be interested in a move to Anfield with the amount of Spaniards here, but like I said could we afford him  ???

this could bring his price down:

Injured striker Villa adds to Valencia woes

VALENCIA, December 12 (Champions League) - Valencia's misery at getting knocked out of Europe looks set to be compounded with the loss of star striker David Villa for this weekend's home clash against Barcelona.

Villa was forced out of Tuesday's Champions League match against Chelsea shortly after half-time, and tests on Wednesday morning have confirmed the Spain international has a suffered a tear in his thigh muscle.

That is expected to keep Villa out of both the Barcelona match and next week's Copa del Rey meeting with Real Union, and possibly the club's final game of 2007 against Real Zaragoza.

Valencia coach Ronald Koeman admitted after the clash with Chelsea that they could have done without this latest injury setback.

'It is a big blow to be without him,' said Koeman.

'We have suffered with injuries this season and this is just another blow for us. Villa had a great game and I think we are getting better as a side.'

Although Valencia managed to hold Group B winners Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge, it was not enough to prevent the stuttering Spanish giants from finishing bottom of the standings and tumbling out of Europe.

'We tried to play on the counter-attack but suffered when it came to the final ball,' said Koeman.

'We swapped Vicente and Villa around to help improve the situation and that helped us get better as the game went on.

'We hadn't conceded in our last few games, but we've had seven, eight or nine players out injured this season and this has affected the team.'

And yes right now we don't have enough in the bank, but I think if we sell our "surplus to requirements" and sell Crouch or Kuyt as a make weight, then I don't see why we couldn't get it done if we REALLY wanted to.  BUT, I think signing Javier is the number 1 priority and then we should asses how much we have, how much we could have if we sold, and what we could do with that much money

Just what is it that makes Mascherano so indispensable to LFC now and for the future ? Not playing devil's advocate here but I'm really intrigued by this one.
Granted he had a great game vs AC Milan in the Champions League final and has put in some good performances in recent seasons....but is he really THAT priceless ? Would we be totally FUBAR'ed if we lost him elsewhere ? Hmmm...I'm not convinced

It's not a cheap price I know but he's so valuable to the team, with Mascherano, Gerrard and Xabi we have the best centre midfielders in the prem if not Europe.

I say just pay the £17m and keep a tried and tested quality player rather than shell out on someone who will be a big risk.

Agreed. And he's still quite young too, so there's still more to come from him, I reckon.

At 23, and a consistent starter for Argentina, one of the best countries in the world.  If you get your hands on a player of such quality you don't let go.  Rafa's squad relies on quality of depth and the depth of CM is one of our chief assets.

Get out of Toon: Newcastle put £8m Owen up for grabs

Michael Owen's miserable stay at Newcastle will end during next month's transfer window if the club can find a buyer.

Newcastle are ready to cut their losses on the England striker, who cost them £17million to sign from Real Madrid in the summer of 2005.

Manager Sam Allardyce has contacted Manchester City's Sven Goran Eriksson to see if he is interested in Owen. The two worked closely together during the Swede's five-and-a-half years in charge of England but although Eriksson is keen, City owner Thaksin Shinawatra has blocked any deal because of the 28-year-old's wretched fitness record since he moved to St James' Park.

Owen has started only 21 games since joining Newcastle. When his £105,000-a-week salary is taken into account, the deal has so far cost them more than £30m.

Newcastle will want about £8m and fear the former Liverpool striker would be available for nothing at the end of next summer if he is not sold. There has been no sign of a contract extension and Owen is eager to be playing European football at this critical stage of his career.

Owen is expected to return against Derby on Sunday week after spending more time on the sidelines because of the damaged hamstring he picked up on international duty with England.

Allardyce would prefer to do a deal towards the end of January, which would give Owen time to prove his fitness.

Newcastle will be without Obafemi Martins during the African Nations Cup next month and will need a ready-made replacement.

Crucially, Allardyce has been told he has little cash for transfers during the January window and will have to generate his own finance. If he can find a buyer for Owen, he will be given the funds for new players.

Owen's miserable injury record has contributed to Newcastle's disappointing form over recent years and former manager Sir Bobby Robson will tonight stir the pot further by claiming the club's problems can be traced back to his departure from St James' Park.

Would be a big gamble but Imho a gamble that could pay off, £8million is chicken feed for a top striker but I would expect the medical would take about 2 weeks to check all his previous injuries (One week to read the list, one week to check them :D ) Highly unlikely that we will show any interest this time, but maybe one way to get in a goalscorer to match Torres?

No I must be honest i personally wouldn't touch him with a barge-pole these days. He seems to me to have retained pretty much all of his ability, and when he goes to Man City, Birmingham, Villa, pompey or whoever it is he will do well. He will have periods when he plays seven games on the bounce, scores five goals and everyone will say it's a shrewd piece of business. Then will come the injuries again, the two months on the sidelines, followed by returns and breakdowns. Purely for that reason, I don't think he would be worth either the fee or the likely salary.

Spot on.

The sentiment is nice, but I think it would be better to leave things be and close this chapter once and for all. Let's just remember the good times Owen provided us with and let Torres provide us with even better times from now on and many years forward :buttrock
