Worried

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

The new owners will take out a loan of 400 hundred million within the next 30 days because the new stadium has cost more than expected.

I am really worried about the future of the club and the massive debt we are in.
If god forbid we don not qualify for the CL the implications could have a terrible effect come the end of the season with no money for new players and paying back these loans.

We will be in around about as much debt as Man U only they have the gate recepts that trebble ours.
Major financial implications if we dont go further in this competition.

I said a few weeks ago I wasnt @rsed about it this season and want the prem more that is still the case however not getting past the group stages will be humiliating and embarressing if we have to replace the CL badge on our shirt to Wafer Cup ones.

We dont know anything about these new owners we needed a new stadium and better players but at what cost?
Our new players have come in only improvement has been Torres after all the money spent.

Still playing dire boring football, the teams lathargic even without Crouch, not enough goals being scored major worry again.
We have gone stale again and we are only into October.
Half @rsed half hearted players only one pulling his weight has been gerrard the last two games.

I am worried about Rafa's future.
Worried about the new owners.
Worried about the effect on the team if we dont go through the CL.
Worried that we have far far to many players and Rafa cant keep them all happy.
So the rotation will continue.

Worried about the debt and if the new owners sack Rafa at the end of the season if we dont win anything the whole process of a new manager coming in ripping the team apart and starting from square one all over again.

However maybe I am worrying uneccassary and we get through Rafa changes his tactics, he brings in a second in command, we win the prem and everything in the garden will be rosy.

LONDON (Reuters) - Liverpool FC is no more than a month away from refinancing the debt used to buy it earlier this year, in a deal that could help pay to build a new stadium, the club's owner said on Thursday.

"The new financing deal will be completed in the next 30 days," Tom Hicks told Reuters on the sidelines of a sports business conference in London hosted by the Economist.

He declined to discuss details of the debt package, but said the new stadium was likely to cost about 400 million pounds, 120 million more than originally expected, and be ready by 2011.

Wachovia, the fourth-largest U.S. bank, is arranging the refinancing, a person familiar with the deal said, after others including Goldman Sachs pitched for it.

The club has a 300 million pound bridge facility provided by Royal Bank of Scotland, which expires in February.

Hicks, along with fellow U.S. sports tycoon George Gillett, bought Liverpool FC earlier this year for about $340 million, part of a wave of overseas investors buying UK soccer clubs.

He said the acquisition had more to do with his love of sport than his bank account.

"People get involved with sport because of a passion," Hicks said. "There's better investments that I could make than owning a football club. But the passion is there.

He said he would be "horribly disappointed" if Liverpool did not qualify for the Champions League final rounds.

A 2-1 loss on Wednesday to Beşiktaş left Liverpool, a finalist in last season's Champions League, at the bottom of Group A with only one point from three games and close to exiting at the group stage.

"I think we have the right players. They just need to play better," Hicks said, who also backed the club's manager, Rafa Benitez, calling him the "right man for Liverpool".

He declined to answer a question about whether Liverpool, currently fourth in the Premier League, would pursue further signings when allowed in January.

Hicks, co-founder of buyout firm Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst, owns the Texas Rangers baseball team and Dallas Stars NHL franchise, while Gillett owns NHL's Montreal Canadians.

Last night at the Sportmans dinner in Liverpool Guillem Balague said.

The Americans are looking to get rid of Liverpool as quick as they can and it will be sold to the Arabs who wanted to invest in us within a year.

Rafa has a number 2 from within the club already lined up, it will not be Sammy Lee.

We only signed Torres because we could afford Villa or Eto, although he does think Torres is a great player.

Garcia left because he didin't want his son to be brought up in Liverpool.

He thinks we will win the league.

Look at the Arsenal story.

Record profits bigger money wise than United - all down to a new stadium.

Yes Leon top of the league play the best football in the league, have a manager with a great eye for spotting talent.
Will progress in the CL, have a huge spanking brand new stadium.
If we dont go through we will be in an awful lot of financial trouble.
With hardly no money at the end of the season to buy two or three world class players.
One more world class striker, replacements for Hyypia/Finnan/Riise.

I wouldn't be overly worried about the re-financing, it's fairly commonplace in these huge business deals. We're all as football fans probably going to have to get used to the concept of clubs changing hands every few years and sometimes over even shorter periods, that's what happens with big business and I have absolutely no doubts that that's what will happen with football clubs as well.

This is one of the reasons why in my opinion, the pressure on managers such as Rafa is even greater than before. Obviously if we don't progress in the Champions League and don't get close to winning the Premiership, the owners investment is worth significantly less than might otherwise be the case. Given this, it's probably reasonable to assume that they won't be quite as patient as perhaps David Moores might have been.

I must confess I also detected a slight undercurrent of exasperation in the interview with one of the owners with the plight of the team and in particular, Rafa's methods. They don't to the best of my knowledge, rotate the team is baseball, basketball and American football though I may be wrong. It may have been the case that blokes like Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth and Karim Al whatever his name was didn't travel to some games to give them a rest but I'm not aware of it.

These guys are coming into football with very likely a lack of knowledge about the game, (before anybody asks "how the feck do you know that?", the answer is of course I don't. It's a guess). Just about every expert, every ex player, every pundit, every reporter (bar Paul Tompkins bless him) are unanimous in the asserion that Rafa has drastically over-rotated the team over an extended period. His immediate peers, who manage clubs with similar aspirations to ours rotate the team much less than Rafa. Given this, the numerous people whispering in their ear that our man has got it wrong, allied to what they can see with their own eyes (you don't need to be an expert on football to see we aren't really playing that well) then you can't be too surprised that Rafa is going to come under pressure.

I would though urge the owners and fans of the club to hold fire. Not till after the Arsenal game, we aren't Spurs FFS but until a reasonable assessment can be made. Bring Torres, Alonso and Agger back into the team and we will improve drastically. We will start to win games again because we've got good players which Rafa bought.

Whether the turn around happens quick enough to keep us in contention for trophies, and particularly the League remains to be seen. Even if it doesn't though, that's not where I would pass judgement. My judgement will come once we go on a run again, once we get some momentum going. Will we at that point, sit on our hands and let the players play, let the players grab the headlines? If we can learn and move forward than we should stick with Rafa. Like I said earlier though, if he plans to change the team seventy odd times in the first fifteen games next season as well, then we will never ever win the League with him in charge and we should look elsewhere.

The daft part is, his successor could come in and without doing too much could really win some trophies. Put his arm around a couple, talk nicely to a couple more, sign a left sided midfielder, a decent striker and centre half cover and pick from a core thirteen and he'll probably win the fecking league. Rafa has us on the brink, all he has to do is to realise that what worked for Valencia won't work for Liverpool and he can write himself into the history books. Great men are strong and can take pressure, even greater men admit they are wrong sometimes.

To use the same method of thinking:

United - New AMERICAN owners, re financing loads of debt - League winners.

Arsenal - Ownership changes, new stadium, some debt - the best thing since sliced bread.
