Owen

Many think Owen has lost some of his predatory instinct, perhaps deep in his heart: Owen feels it too -which is fatal if so. But I believe it doesn't so. It's not the beast who's lost his viciousness, but it's the victims who's already recognized the beast's hunting pattern and therefore being cognizant of the attacking approach taken.

Owen of some years ago who broke through the Argentina's barricade to score a fantastic goal compared to "Today's Owen" have no big difference.

He should improvise his approach in creating goals so as the opponents won't read the same book every match he plays. It has been a publicised secret that Owen needs some clean space to create goals. And now every player against us has made it sure to keep the secret safely in their minds.

How many times have you seen Owen scoring from a narrow angle? were they as much as Fowler's? (That's where the line is drawn between Owen and Fowler, Owen kills better, but Fowler hunts better) Owen should enhance his skill in creating goals, or else he will be just the most boring goalscorer in the world (hopefully it hasn't started yet). Strikers like Henry and Basten always found a way to respond to opponents movement. They let the defenders getting frustrated to take the advantage from and in turn to slot the ball through and rarely failed within 90 mins.

I'm no Rush, just being what fans are for.

imo, this one is all down to a lack of confidence. how many times last season did you see owen miss an easy chance. remember away to southampton when owen just could not score no matter what. he very much still has what it takes to get into goalscoring positions but it seems that his killer instinct eludes him. he'll get it back sooner or later tho.

Adorer is right and he writes very good english.

Owen will not be better if he does not find a new approach to get his goals. He has become predictable.

How many defenders are willing to give Owen the space? None! Its easy to handle Owen. Just stick to him like glue.

Conclusion, Owen really needs to improve his game. Tactics and technique.

Begintoend, I think Owen's problems were mainly due to less pace now than before. In Euro 2004, he hardly did any runs and did not produce even one which left the defenders trailing in his wake.

He had electric pace, and relied a lot on this advantage as he is not physically the strongest striker. Now he has to develop other aspects of his game. Hopefully, the pace will come back as he has had leg muscle problems throughout his career, and has also admitted so.

Owen agrees to extend Anfield stay
By Wayne Veysey, Evening Standard, 27 July 2004

Michael Owen has finally agreed an extension to his current Liverpool contract and will put the finishing touches to the deal when the club return from their American tour. The 24-year-old has one year left on his existing contract and the most likely outcome is that he will sign a two-year extension.

The striker's agent, Tony Stephens, has flown out to the USA to continue talks with Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry and is expected to quickly confirm the deal, which will earn Owen a reported £90,000 a week. The deal should be complete before Liverpool's first game of the season - a Champions League qualifier on 11 August. Owen has been joined at Anfield by defender Josemi, who has agreed a £2million move from Malaga. The 24-year-old can play right-back or centrehalf and will join the rest of the squad in America later this week, pending further talks.

Owen reached a cross roads in his career this summer, after 2 years of indifferent form he simply had to make some decision one way or another for the good of his career.

He appears that he has decided to stay at Anfield, obviously impressed with new manager Benitez.

Benitez comes with a big reputation, so lets see if he can help Owen improve his game and help him return to the kind of form that once put him among the very best strikers in the world.

Benitez was raving about Owen after the Roma friendly.

I think that despite his suggestions to the contrary, Owen will be Benitez' first choice, with Baros, Pongolle and Cisse battling it out to partner him.

Owen will have his injury spells, and we'll probably have a lot of games thise season where our forward line will comprise of Cisse and Baros, with Pongolle coming more and more into the team.

I hope Owen is lucky with injuries this season and we finally see the best from him. Its two years since we last saw the real Michael Owen in a consistent fashion, hopefully he can deliver under Benitez. It will certainly make the Spaniard's job a hell of a lot easier if he does!   :upside:

Owen's contract negotiations reminds me of Keane's contract talks with UTD in the late 1990s.
